Giraffe meets Jackal

At DSEI, Saab is showing its Giraffe 1X 3D radar for the first time in its serial production form. In another first, the radar is mounted on a Supacat Jackal vehicle, highlighting the compact form and low mass of the high-performance sensor system and the ease with which it can be redeployed.

The combination is on show in the East outside display area (OD 23), from where a live air picture is being generated and demonstrated. The air picture is being used as a feed by the nearby stand of Chess Dynamics as part of the company's counter-unmanned aerial system (C-UAS) display.

Giraffe 1X has an active electronically scanned array and incorporates gallium nitride (GaN) semiconductor technology. It can be used in a number of roles across land and sea domains, from civilian airport employment to forming the core of a ground-based air defence system. It can operate as a standalone system, or as part of a wider network.

The sensor's agility and flexibility allow it to perform the air surveillance, counter-rocket, artillery and mortar and C-UAS roles simultaneously.

It incorporates Saab's enhanced low, slow and small (ELSS) target detection function that allows it to discriminate targets such as small UASs from other tracks, for example, birds, with a very low false alarm rate.
