Float Suspend, Spa Design V | Fall 2016 | Duration 15 weeks Rhinoceros | V-Ray | Photoshop | Illustrator | 3D Print Donghia Foundation Senior Student Scholarship Award Gensler Brinkmann Scholarship, First Place IIDA TX OK Excellence in Design Award, Student Commercial

The project scope was to design a Bath House occupying the upper two floors of the Van Zandt, a 16 story boutique hotel in the center of Austin, Texas. The unique experience that water provides is the sense of floating and feeling that a weight has been taken off one’s shoulders. The three components in this spa – the suspended Corian, the floating paths, and the water – work together to provide a buoyant sensation, and thus a weightless sense of relaxation for the guests. The spa’s layout resembles an archipelago; the main programs are situated on different rooms/islands, connected by elevated paths or bridges. The floor plan is flooded with a layer of water that varies in height, from a shallow and decorative layer, to 4 feet deep pools.

This initial exercise was used to explore issues of serial variation and digitally derived patterning for a system of Corian bands. Twisting the bands allowed for natural openings to occur, which created an attractive visual effect suitable for partitions and screen applications. A smaller scale of the twists on selected shower areas provided a surface texture aimed at engaging the sense of touch as well as enhancing the way water would flow down these surfaces. Finally, the ceiling height was manipulated to respond to different degrees of privacy and intimacy across the space.

The layout was inspired by the Hammam, or the Islamic variant of the Roman bath. The thresholds between treatment rooms play a key role in the transition across the bathing sequence. Similarly, the different treatment stations in “float suspend” are connected through linear platforms raised off the ground, above a layer of water.

Listen, Exhibit Advanced Design | Spring 2018 | Duration 3 weeks Rhinoceros | V-Ray | Photoshop | Illustrator

Given 1,800 square feet of space and the freedom to choose any exhibition topic, the concept “Listen was selected as the focus of this experiential exhibit. The design started with the study of typologies; the relationship between sound, space, and activity were examined and used to inform the design. The four typologies (the Workshop, the Hideout, the Sky Dome, and the Shelter) each feature different kinds of engagement and activity. By providing varying environments accompanied with different sounds, the audience of the exhibit are invited to listen and reflect on their own experience as they move through the stations in the exhibit.

The Workshop is a place for visitors to be physically engaged. Each station features sounds from different instruments, so visitors are encouraged to move around, play with the setup, and listen to the different tones they can create.

The small, enclosed space of the Hideout limits the number of people at one time. While sitting in silence, or listening to tik toks or the slow dripping of water, one reflects on his or her past experiences. The acoustic privacy provided by the Hideout allows the users to share their thoughts if they so choose.

The Sky Dome provides a suitable space to complement the sound of nature. People gather, but do not interact. The sound contrasted with the lack of imagery encourages one to imagine being somewhere else. The ability for the visitors’ minds to wander frees them from the everyday stress, thus giving them an opportunity to relax and meditate.

The Shelter is a place for conversation. With seating provided and the separation from the open area, one feels comfortable to talk to people that are around, even strangers. A possible topic for discussion is their experience from the exhibit.

Supreme, Retail Office Advanced Design | Spring 2018 | Duration 8 weeks Revit | Rhinoceros | V-Ray | Photoshop | Illustrator

Students were given a 2-story warehouse to convert into a retail office for Supreme. Aside from necessary functions to support an office such as workspaces, meeting rooms, and other services, a focus on branding, culture, and environmental identity was encouraged. Supreme’s brand originated from the skateboarding culture; this led to the design decision that the driving factor for the concept would be centered on a path to experience skateboarding through New York. This path set the main circulation through the office and created different work zones. The work zones provide various kinds of environments suitable for all types of tasks and employees, from casual to formal and from focus to collaboration. Material and color selections follow Supreme’s existing branding, conveying a sense of raw but warm atmosphere. The half pipe feature serves to activate the vertical circulation while also establishing the geometry for the mezzanine level, which extends outdoors on to the terrace. A balance of open work stations and focus work areas is the ideal setup for a productive environment. Using this strategy, the design effectively achieves a seat count for 400+ employees with a work to collaboration zone ratio of roughly 7 to 1.

European Travel, Sketches Visual Communications | Fall 2017 | Duration 5 weeks Free-hand Sketching

The European Study Abroad Program, organized by the University of Texas at Austin School of Architecture, takes the students through Denmark, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. During the five weeks of travel, students use sketches to observe and examine different scales of architecture and design.

Interior Intersections, Booth Design IV | Spring 2016 | Duration 7 weeks Rhinoceros | V-Ray | Photoshop | Illustrator

As a competition held by IIDA, students design a booth for IIDA in the Orgatec Trade Show, covering an area of 300 square feet to include a reception desk, wall feature, and storage. The design Interior Intersections accomplishes both the functionality and aesthetic qualities that IIDA requires and envisions. Functionally, the structure incorporates the three programmatic elements that IIDA specified. IIDA wishes to be portrayed as professional yet welcoming and approachable. Thus, the front of the booth is open and inviting with restful seating. The overall form of Interior Intersections is visually intriguing with the suspension and variation. The fourteen feet tall structure takes advantage of the high ceiling of a convention center, so that it is distinct in a large space. IIDA also desires for their logo to be displayed in a prominent manner, therefore two of the walls in the air have their logo recessed. In addition, the occasional curvature and blue gradient plays with visual perception. They attract the viewers’ eyes, which contributes to the captivating quality of the booth. The design harmoniously integrates the programmatic requirements into a structure that is visually intriguing with the variation, suspension, curvature, and color gradient. The height allows it to exert its presence in a large space, and IIDA’s logo is displayed in a prominent manner.

Through the Mews, Community Advanced Design | Fall 2017 | Duration 8 weeks SketchUp | AutoCAD | Photoshop | Illustrator Group Project | Amy Chou | Oceane Dehaynain | Kyle James Anna Lazenby | Virginie Mure

Located in the 19th arrondissement in Paris, adjacent to the city of Pantin, the site for “Through the Mews” is very complex. The infrastructure surrounding the site includes a highway that cuts across, a rail yard and a tram stop on the north side, a tram and pedestrian bridge on the east side, and a canal on the south side. The design team used the varying elevations of the site to differentiate between public and private areas. The ground level is a field that allows for free circulation, whereas specific paths create guided circulation for the first floor. The main façade for the project is seen from Parc de la Villette, the park to the southwest side of the site. The programs on the site include work, live, culture, and leisure. To respond to the conditions of the site, offices are located on the north and east ends of the site. The L-shaped structure helps protect the housing in the center from the noises of the rail yard and the tram bridge. Culture and leisure programs take form in a variety of spaces, such as gallery, retail, park, and community center, and can be found throughout the site.

The design for the housing began at the scale of the individual units. The sizes including small, medium, large, and extra large can accommodate for different people, such as small or large families, young adult workers, students, and artists. In addition, an unique unit was created to combine live and work. The units are based on the same width to allow for vertical stacking, and the focus on cross ventilation was aimed at comfort within the units. When combined, the shape of the units naturally form areas for circulation, which become shared space for the residents. The program and elevational changes are shown in the sections. Varied floor plate heights allow natural light into the storage warehouse and give more privacy to residential units by setting them above the public ground. The housing units terraces down towards the canal to provide views. Using the section to drive the site strategy effectively incorporates the design with the existing site conditions.

Initial iterations began with connecting different elevations of the site. The programs responded to the existing conditions of the site, with the offices on the side of the rail yard to protect the housing from the noise.

(K)not Tied, Restaurant Design VI | Spring 2017 | Duration 15 weeks Revit | Rhinoceros | Photoshop | Illustrator

The restaurant is located in East Austin, at the corner of 13th Street and Chicon. The design is for a nonprofit restaurant; partnering with the MELJ Justice Center, it will serve as a facility to train Formerly Incarcerated Persons for both social and culinary skills. The design concept is focused on empathy, achieved through the sequence of experience that customers will encounter. They are first greeted at the point of sale counter, where they will place their order. Then, walking through a dim hallway that physically closes in will provide a provocative experience that causes one to stop and think. Stories about the employees are shared on the walls, so customers could put themselves in the employee’s shoes and understand their situation. Lastly, they exit the hallway and come out to the kitchen, where they will see the employees working. The empathy and understanding achieved through the interior architecture will bring the people of the community closer together at a human-scale.

Gensler Intern Project Internship | Summer 2017 | Duration 3 months Revit | Rhinoceros | V-Ray | Photoshop | Illustrator Group Project | Olivija Cepaite | Luis Yanez Hernandez

During the Gensler internship, the interns spend every Friday afternoon collaborating on the intern project. The client for the intern project is Community First! Village, a 27acre master planned community that provides affordable, permanent housing and a supportive community for the disabled, chronically homeless in Central Texas. Since 2005, this transformative residential program has been a staple of Mobile Loaves & Fishes and has become the largest community-based model in the country lifting homeless men and women up off the streets into community and home. The purpose of the project is to design modular housing units that can be built for the new site at Community First! Village. The units must be rectangular to fit the concrete slabs and are 300-350 square feet. To make them independent units, they need a kitchnette and bathroom. The design takes into consideration some issues the residents are facing with the existing housing, such as limited storage and counter space. Other details addressed include adding a chair for relaxation, an overhang above the exterior door, and a separate dining and work table. Through these thoughtful touches, the design makes these units a more comfortable place the residents can call “home.

Additional services were requested by the client with the intention to enhance the design in the district attorney’s reception area. Construction had began so the flexibility for changes to the space planning was limited, but materiality, the design of the glass and transaction counter, the ceiling feature, lighting, and detailing for the monitor mounts were studied. Once initial concept renderings were approved, additional options were iterated through before landing on a final design. The changes were captured in the drawing documentation as a revision set, with updated plans, finish plans, RCPs, elevations, and details.
