Dolce Vita Children’s Boutique in New Hartford Shopping Center aims to dispel that notion. Owner CaSandra Packard of Rome says her 3-year-old daughter, Elasandra, is the inspiration for the items she carefully selects to bring into her store. “Our boutique name means ‘The Sweet Life’ in Italian, and our idea is that children and the way they dress are what make life sweet,” CaSandra says. With an eye for fashion, the owner says she always had the goal opening a children’s clothing store, which is now past its second year in business. “After my daughter was born, I noticed a void for the type of items I was searching for for her,” CaSandra says. “Fun, stylish, unique and affordable children’s clothing.”

Baked Eggs with Peppers and Breakfast Sausage 6 ounces breakfast sausage (if links, remove from casing) 1/2 bag Birds Eye Recipe Ready Tri Color Pepper & Onion Blend 4 large eggs Salt and ground black pepper 1/4 cup whole milk or heavy cream 1/2 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese Chopped fresh parsley for garnish Preheat oven to 325?F. Lightly grease four 8-ounce ramekins with nonstick cooking spray. Brown sausage over medium heat in nonstick skillet, stirring and breaking up sausage, about 5 minutes. Stir in peppers and onions and cook, stirring occasionally, 5 minutes or until vegetables are tender. Evenly divide vegetable mixture among prepared ramekins. Gently break one egg into each ramekin and season with salt and pepper. Evenly top each egg with milk and cheese. Place ramekins on baking sheet. Sunnycrest Orchards A Long Standing Family Owned Business By Diego Phillips

Customers with a hankering for local artisanal vinegar need go no further than Sunnycrest Orchards, located at 7869 State Route 10 in Sharon Springs.The farm is just a few miles north of the village, intersecting with East/West State Route 20. The original farmstead was settled in the 1800s by the Kling family, who used the property to raise fruit and vegetables, as it still does today.Through the years, the farm passed on to a series of stewards. In 2013 Laurie Schilde Schmitt and Timothy Schilde purchased the family farm from their parents, Milton and Carol Schilde, who bought the property in 1975 as mainly an apple orchard with a free-standing cider mill and seasonal roadside stand. In 2014 the siblings re-purposed an old ice creamfast food business into a cider mill and cidery, and

Laurie says that one popular best-seller is Fire Apple cider vinegar, which is a robust blend of herbs, horseradish, jalapeno pepper and honey. Laurie says the ingredients used in the vinegar production are all local.The herbs are grown on the farm and the berries are grown nearby as well. Connor was a 2003 graduate of the Herkimer BOCES LPN program. Each year, her father, David Connor, carries on her love of the Christmas season with the awarding of a scholarship to assist a single parent to enjoy Christmas with the parent’s child. Ice Hockey: The Toughest and Most Physical Sport in America By Daniel Baldwin

Many sport fanatics believe that indoor and outdoor games are the toughest and most weight losing sports throughout the country.

Does that mean you’re plopped on the couch, lazily watching the NFL playoffs or highlights of Yankees’ captain Derek Jeter’s farewell season on TV?

“Basketball is a good weight losing sport,” New York City native Jason Rodriguez said. “You’re running up and down the court non-stop for a long period of time. Football, on the other hand, is more of a strength building sport.”

If you’re a hearty Mohawk Valley resident, you’re out skiing or snowmobiling, maybe jogging and eyeing the long countdown to the 2015 Boilermaker. Perhaps you’re standing in line, trying to snare a ticket to a sold-out Utica Comets hockey game?

But that is not the case from a statistical standpoint. According to Livestrong. com, players are more likely XS WXE] ½X ERH PSWI [IMKLX when they play a sixty-minute period of ice hockey When a 185-pound person plays one hour of hockey, he or she burns 710 calories, according to the Harvard Health Publication. That is greater than basketball (700 calories per hour) and football (594 calories per hour). During a professional or minor hockey game, players have to constantly skate up and down the ice. They also have to use their upper body to pass the puck, to other players, and shoot it into the net. This sport requires a lot of energy and concentration. A majority of players also get slammed against the glass boards (which separates the ice from the fans). “They’re (hockey players) constantly moving around and everything instead of stopping a few minutes,” Westmoreland resident Ryan Dunning said. “They’re constantly skating at a fast pace, picking up speed, and slowing down. There is a lot of high intensity stuff.” Eddie Olczyk is the assistant men’s hockey coach for the Utica College Pioneers. Before coming to Utica, Olczyk played for the Bloomington Thunder of the Southern Professional Hockey League. He also played varsity hockey at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. than football or basketball. “Hockey skating isn’t easy,” Olczyk said. “It is different than riding a bike and there are no out of bounds. In football, they’re a lot of penalties and breaks. But there are not a lot of breaks in hockey. This sport is fast.” Shooting the puck and skating are not the only elements that a player needs, in order to achieve in this sport. It is also important, for hockey players, to eat a light meal before every game. Olczyk said the Utica College hockey players have a TVIKEQI QIEP ½ZI LSYVW before a game. The players stuff up on pasta, chicken, fruits, and vegetables. According to the Peak Performance website, food is basically the fuel towards giving hockey players’ the speed and agility they need on the ice. If a player does not eat before a game, then he or she will not have enough energy to play a sixty-minute hockey game. He or she would be tired and not have the ability to skate fast. “It’s important for our players to eat before every game so that they can have the energy to skate and play well during a game,” he said. “We tell our players to eat fruits and vegetables before every game and draw away from junk food.”

Time is another reason why hockey players burn more calories than football or basketball players. Each team, both minor and major, plays a total of 60-to-80 games during the regular season. Football players, on the other hand, play 12 to sixteen games during the regular season. The players also take the time to practice before each game, and there is also postseason. During the hockey season, Olczyk and the rest of the Utica College hockey team spend one-to-two hours, each day, practicing on the ice. Although the amount of practice hours increase near the end of the season. “We have two hockey games on every weekend,” Olczyk said, “so we have four days of practice before every game. But once [I KIX XS XLI ½REP [IIOW of the regular season, we increase our practice time in order to make a push towards the playoffs.”

Shootouts between games also give spectators an opportunity to compete for free merchandise and other prizes. Despite the weather, the setup at the Wood’s Inn has turned the event into a popular tailgate party atmosphere. Two shuttle buses transport fans and players between Inlet and Old Forge, stopping at local establishments and hotels. Fans can warm up with refreshments from the AIB Shanty or belly-up to the ice bar. Games can also be viewed from the comfort of The Woods Inn’s dining room and via webcams.The heated party tent has beer and food specials, in addition to hosting live bands on Friday and Saturday night. Frey, who became the owner of Wood’s Inn with his wife Nancy last July, has built a permanent pavilion above the ponds, which is also wrapped in sheeting and provides comfort for fans. Flourless Brownie Cookies

Makes one dozen 1/2 cup Casein free softened butter or coconut oil* 1/2 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup white sugar replacement of your choice 1 egg 1 teaspoon vanilla 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 cup cocoa powder 1/2 cup white chocolate chips 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips 1/2 cup walnuts (optional)

Preheat oven to 350ยบF. Mix together the butter and sugars. Add the egg and vanilla and mix until combined. Mix together the soda, salt, and cocoa and add to the wet ingredients, mixing until combined. Stir in the chocolate chips and nuts. Bake for about 10 minutes or until they look done.

Several days after his surgery he was sent to a rehabilitation center for treatments to his back. I visited him at this therapy center several times. When I walked into his VSSQ SR Q] ½VWX ZMWMX - saw my friend sitting in his bed and smiling as we exchanged big hellos. I also noticed another patient in this room sitting in a wheelchair. This man didn’t have any legs from just below his knees. I said hello to him. He nodded with a slight hello and nothing more. I urged myself to make more conversation [MXL LMQ FYX EX XLEX QMRYXI I didn’t know what to say. I was lost for words. I felt for him. I thought how awful and depressing it must be to lose your legs. I wondered how he lost his legs but thought it better not to ask. I thought he might

be a veteran sent here for QSVI XVIEXQIRXW SV [EW LI in a horrible accident that cost him his legs? It seemed XLSYKL XLEX LI TVIJIVVIH not to talk so I turned and talked to my friend. What you need to know about Ebola Ebola has been ravaging residents of West Africa for quite some time, but the virus hit closer to home when the disease touched down in North America in September of 2014.The presence of the Ebola virus in the United States sparked immediate panic, but many concerns surrounding this potentially deadly virus are unfounded. What is Ebola? Ebola is a rare and deadly disease caused by infection with a strain of an Ebola virus, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.Though Ebola primarily affects humans and other primates, it also can be passed by bats and other wild animals. Ebola viruses are contained in five different varieties: Ebola virus (formerly Zaire virus), Sudan virus,Ta Forest virus, Bundibugyo virus, and Reston virus. Little is known of how the virus first passes to humans, but it could be through interaction or consump-

tion of infected wild animals. Human-to-human transmission is to blame for the epidemic in Africa. How is Ebola contracted? In humans, Ebola spreads only via direct contact with the bodily fluids of a person who has developed symptoms of the virus. Fluids that may contain the Ebola virus include saliva, blood, mucus, vomit, feces, tears, breast milk, urine, and semen.The World Health Organization says only people who are quite sick are able to spread Ebola through saliva, and more studies are necessary to determine if the virus can be transmitted through sweat. Many people are infected when they come in contact with blood, vomit and feces from infected individuals.Vomiting and diarrhea are main symptoms of the disease and prolific transmitters of the virus. It s important to note that deceased bodies remain infectious, and people handling human remains have contracted the virus from burial rituals and embalming. Even if a person has recovered from Ebola, the virus may still be able to persist in semen or breast milk of survivors for up to seven weeks. Caution is always suggested to prevent additional transmission. What are Ebola symptoms? The incubation period for Ebola is between two and 21 days. Many infected persons exhibit no symptoms during this time.Typically, the first symptoms of the virus to appear are the sudden onset of fever, fatigue, muscle pain, headache, and sore throat, according to the WHO.Vomiting, rash, diarrhea, and symptoms of impaired kidney and liver function may eventually appear. In some cases, internal and external bleeding may occur. It can be very difficult to distinguish Ebola from other infectious diseases. Several tests are required to confirm Ebola is the culprit behind symptoms. How is Ebola treated? Many nations do not have the necessary medical care facilities and equipment to treat Ebola or contain the disease.There are currently no proven treatments

available for Ebola, nor a vaccine. However, supportive care in the way of rehydration and treatment of specific symptoms can improve a patient s chance of survival. Experimental treatments with blood products and immune therapies also are being evaluated. At press time, two Texas nurses, who contracted Ebola while treating the late Thomas Eric Duncan, the first person to be diagnosed with Ebola in the United States, were recovering quite well. Process for avoiding Ebola and containing the virus Successful outbreak control relies heavily on case management, monitoring symptoms, good laboratory services, and safe burials.The CDC recommends practices of careful hygiene, including washing hands with soap and water. Avoidance of blood and body fluids is key. Anyone who has had contact with someone suffering from Ebola is at risk.The virus can enter the body through broken skin or unprotected mucus membranes in the eyes, nose or mouth, and the CDC released updated guidelines for people who might have been exposed to the Ebola virus. The new guidelines increase the level of protection by outlining different levels of exposure and outlining different public health actions that can be taken for each of those levels of exposure, said CDC Director Dr.Tom Frieden. Direct contact with infected body fluids, for instance, would be classified as high risk. Someone would be considered low risk if he or she traveled on an airplane with a person showing symptoms of Ebola. At press time, no travel restrictions to North America from West Africa had been implemented. However, travelers should expect screenings for symptoms at airports. While Ebola has a high fatality rate elsewhere in the world, health advisors want to reiterate that pneumonia and the flu are responsible for more deaths in the United States than Ebola. T
