Zooming Paintings - studies These five paintings are a series to represent zooming in or out of an object. In this painting, a still life is used and starts with it zoomed in not knowing exactly what the object is until you move to the next painting and see start to recognize the object. The paintings above are studies done on a 10x10 board with acrylic paint. These studies are done to determine the color, layout, and composition before the final paintings.

Zooming Paintings The final outcome from the studies. These five paintings are 2’x2’ done with acrylic paint on boards.

PAINTINGS

Oil Paintings Some example of works that were done with oil paints. These works were done in various sizes and painted from photographs. The process took longer to do than other paints such as acrylic that are shown on the next page as oil paint takes a longer time to dry therefore careful use of color must be considered beforehand.

Cottage Life Size: 18”x 30” canvas This painting uses a variation of brush sizes to depict the architecture and landscape. A blend of neutral colors are used to depict a soft and welcoming emotion.

Prairie Birds Size: 5”x 8” canvas board Due to the size of the painting, smaller brushes were needed for detail and precision.

Great Orca Size: 5”x 8” canvas board The challenge to this painting is the realistic rendition of the water and the splashing from the Orca.

Zen Size: 12”x 18” canvas done at a Paintnite event.

Untouched Earth Size: 36”x 48” canvas. A landscape done from a photograph.

Safety - study Size: 6”x 6” hardboard panel A study done of a still life.

CUSTOM PROJECT

Detailing Assignment This project is to help us develop our knowledge of custom detailing and assemblies. The assembly is chosen from a photograph which shows a ceiling, floor, and wall design. The drawings are done by hand to show drafting skills such as line weight.

Restaurant - photo The photograph chosen has a wall system that connects with the ceiling. The tables are mounted to the wall and it has no legs underneath it.

Floor Plan and Wall Detail Connection Above is the floor plan and a wall connection detail drawn to scale. Dimensions were estimated based on our knowledge through commercial construction class.

Wall Section and Connection Detail The section is taken from the wall. It shows the wall construction and the table. The table connection detail shows how the table is connected because it is not possible to make it in one piece.

CONSTRUCTION

Elevation This is the elevation of the left wall with the windows.

BRANCH ENERGY

Commercial CAD Drawings An example of a construction project done in AutoCAD. It demonstrates understanding of line weight, layers, blocks, and line types. The drawings show how the interior is constructed by having drawings such as elevations, sections, and details.

AVEDA DISPLAY

Aveda Trade Show Display This project demonstrates an integration of Industrial and Visual Communications Design. The trade show requires custom designed wall panels, furnitures, and signage. Aveda has six main products therefore the shape of the trade show is in a hexagon. The color scheme is green to symbolize Aveda’s products: “The art and science of pure flower and plant essences.” Furniture is made out of wood with glass top.

Photo-Realistic Rendering The display is made from Rhinoceros and rendered through Hypershot.

Aveda Trade Show Scaled Model This model is made at a 1:50 scale out of paper, mat board, card stock, and clear vellum.

Display Tables Produced in Rhinoceros and rendered in Hypershot. Rendering to show the detail of the base.

Chair Produced in Rhinoceros and rendered in Hypershot. Rendering shows the detail of the slotted construction.

Close Up of Tables and Chairs for Aveda - scaled model Materials used were paper, card stock, mat board, and clear vellum.

INTEGRATED DESIGN

Tables and Chairs for Aveda - scaled model These were made out of paper. The concept of the furniture is to interlock the pieces together without the use of adhesives.

FACEOOK EXHIBIT

Facebook Exhibition The project is to design an exhibition that will display statistics. Facebook was chosen for this project. The statistics to be exhibited include number of logins and outs worldwide and stats of people on Facebook at a certain time. Foamcore, mat board, and LED lights were used to make a scaled model of the exhibition. This demonstrates interior design by integrating signages and displays. The concept behind the exhibition is to tell a story of a user using Facebook. From the beginning, they would login, the time they spend on it, to logging off. The exhibition itself would also track the amount of people inside and the time they spend in the exhibition.

1. People would enter the exhibition and “login” as they enter the main area of the exhibition. This area will display stats on the amount of people that are currently logged into Facebook worldwide.

2. The main part of this area displays stats of how many people are logged in at a certain time which is indicated on the floor. The wider the walls, the more users are logged in and the skinnier the walls, the less people are logged onto Facebook. The LED lights displays the amount of people logged in per gender (left side being male, right side being female). 3. At the end of the exhibition, there is a comment section where exhibitors can comment and “log out.”

TOWER MODEL

Revit Tower This project demonstrated the skills of using the program Revit. Objectives include using massed forms and converting them into a building model, learn to use the rendering tool, and applying site and entourage components.

The tower consists of 17 floors with two different window panel types and three different finish materials in wall construction.

Render of the Tower This is a rendering of the finished tower. It displays the different construction finishes, a massed sculpture, landscape site, and entourages to make the rendering realistic.

Revit Tower - close up A close up rendering of the tower to display details of the tower.

GERMAN ENGINEERING

Space Standards This part lays out the existing space standards that is currently at German Engineering and a new space layout in the new Teak Building. The purpose of the report is to show the client whether or not the Teak Building is a suitable building for them to move into for their expansion.

Furniture Modules In order for German Engineering to expand, they will need to consider putting in more workstations and reducing offices. This part of the report display options for the client in each department for them to incorporate in their company.

Density plans will let the client know how many workstations and offices can fit into a space. There is a plan for just workstations, a plan for just offices, and a plan for a combination of both workstations and offices.

Adjacency Standards & Results Bubble diagrams are used to show adjacencies of each department and what each of them need in order to be functional. It displays major and minor adjacencies. A comparison table is used to compares the existing and new standards to see if the Teak Building is a good idea for German Engineering to expand into.

BLOOMING CHAIR

Children’s Chair The project is to design a chair for children. This Blooming Chair is designed with more than one function; for sitting and storage. The chair is made of spray painted Baltic Birch wood and each piece is hand cut with a band saw.

Blooming Chair close up to show the storage inside the chair. Blooming Chair in the sitting position with the pedal up that can be used for back support. Blooming Chair in the sitting position.

Inspiration of the Side Table

The table is made of Baltic Birch wood and cut with a CNC machine and then the edges are routered to make it smooth.

Life Size Model of the Cappellini Table

CAPPELLINI TABLE

The project is to pick a furniture company and design a piece of furniture that would fit into the company’s line. Cappellini is the company that inspired this table.

SUSTAINABLE RACKS

Exploration of Material for a Sustainable Rack A 5’ x 5’ hemp material made of all biodegradable products and environmental glue was given to produce a furniture piece. Since the material was never used before, exploration of the material was done to see its capabilities. The product produced is a spice rack. The shape is cut with a CNC machine. Between the material is stained Baltic Birch plywood. The hemp is filled and a coat of gloss is put on it to seal the material. Through exploration, we discovered that this material will easily split therefore corners need to be filled and sanded down. If precision cuts are needed, the CNC machine would be the best choice. The material by itself is not stable therefore other materials such as wood will need to be used.

Building Process As shown in the photo above, the material needed lots of filling as it is very porous. After it is filled, it needed to be sanded to have a smooth finish.

Floor Plan The client wanted a rustic look therefore most of the finishes were wood. Cash desk, barrels and displays are all custom made.

Store Front The store front exterior was given. The design part is the logo that is placed on top and the store front display. This elevation was produced in SketchUp and rendered by hand with markers and pens.

Main Retail Area Area where most of the merchandise is located. The ceiling has rope LED lights and pot lights. The centerpiece is a barreled shaped bulkhead with seasonal items on display.

Bedding Accessories The bedding area is located at the back by the clearance items because it attracts customers to go to the back making them walk through the entire store. Kitchen Accessories This is located at the front of the store as this section contains the most commonly used product and is the focal point for homes.

INTERIOR DESIGN

Cash Desk Custom designed and functions as a cash desk, wrapping area, and wedding reception. The barrels underneath is designed for impulse items.

MAI RESTAURANT

Floorplan Seating 100 customers with a raised dinng area, private seating for parties, dining area for barrier-free customers, and patio seating.

RCP Sloping wooden ceilings draws the eye upwards and creates an illusion of even more height throughout the entire restaurant. Gypsum bulkhead border frame with a series of alternating beams rests on top of the private seating area to create interest for diners.

Concept of MAI Restaurant MAI located in West Edmonton Mall’s Bourbon Street will bring rich history of Vietnam to the world of fine dining. Through the use of quality high end materials and careful placement of selected details, the culture and geography of Vietnam will be translated into the space. Traditional Vietnamese cooking is known for its balance of five elements representing certain tastes with each dish. Using this tradition as inspiration, each of these fundamental elements will be incorporated through material choice, color palette, and furnishing. Low general lighting will add a touch of sophistication and comfort to the space while the use of recessed floor and wall washing lights will highlight important features of the design creating a sense of intrigue.

INTERIOR DESIGN

Restaurant Front An elaborate geometric design communicating the concept of MAI. A waterfall wall to describe one of the five elements of taste. Upon entering the space, customers are greeted by the Buddha statue which sits on a small alcove. The wall behind it features a series of gold metal plates. An extended entrance provides a dramatic transition from Bourbon Street to the interior of the restaurant.
