Xuan Lan

If you’ve ever done a yoga session at home, you’ve probably done one with Xuan Lan (@xuanlanyoga),one of yoga’s leading figures with more than 2 million followers on YouTube and Instagram. As well as teaching online and in-person classes, she’s written 2 books, organises yoga events, and manages both her social networks and her online platform focused on her lifestyle. Her new offices are the result of a spectacular refurbishment of an old factory in the middle of Barcelona. Kave Home has furnished her terrace, where she records most of her videos. Fancy looking in on her little oasis?

1. How important are the surroundings when you’re doing yoga?

Would you like a terrace like the one in Xuan Lan’s studio? Discover the selection of products. Namaste!

Surroundings when you’re doing yoga is very important because we aren’t talking about any old exercise for the body. The energy of a place is something you notice when you go inside. It isn’t only cleanliness or decoration that are important but also the energy inside. We’ve taken care of every element of these new offices, from the entrance to the terrace and the selection of materials and furniture - not only for the aesthetics but also for how well they are made, how they are thought out and designed. All this is a complete package. If we’re selling yoga content, we also offer the energy that goes with this discipline. [ 40 ]

2. What is essential in a space where you practise yoga? It’s essential that a yoga space is spotless, no dust. It’s a place where people feel at ease and this is important because we are using the floor so you notice everything there. If there is too much furniture or too much clutter, that’s also annoying. For me, the environment makes you relax mentally, and to do yoga without being disturbed by anything around you is extremely important. To find this harmony that we have here between the green, the natural elements and the colours, but without overdoing it with beige. I love, for example, brightly coloured cushions that don’t hurt your eyes when you’re in this balanced environment. 3. One of the intrinsic values of yoga is to promote a healthy lifestyle. How have you transmitted this in the office décor? For me, the values of yoga are something we have to prioritise when we offer these kinds of classes; not only thinking about the video for the class but also the environment, the values of each person, the teacher, the team working... We’ve gone with a lot of natural materials. With Kave Home we talked about the type of material, the wood that isn’t just any wood, the fibres, recycled PET for the cushions and fabrics... For me it’s part of our values and what we have to encourage. The t-shirt I’m

wearing is made of organic cotten. We try to make everything consistent. 4. How important is food in your life? Food in general is something we are looking at more and more. But when you do yoga, you’re more aware of what’s good for you and what isn’t. You realise that the 30 seconds of pleasure in the mouth will give you 2 hours of stomachache, and it just isn’t worth it. If your body rejects it or it doesn’t sit well with you for whatever reason, it’s important to listen to your body. It’s much wiser than we think; we always think with our [ 43 ]

minds but the body sends us signals of stress, of food we shouldn’t eat, work overload... If we pay attention to these signs, we can change the way we live, eat, connect, and consume overall.

Carlos Sadness

With his signature mane of hair and indie look, singer Carlos Sadness (@carlossadness) showed us around his home, House Papaya. We spoke to him to find out more about his world, inspired by tropical fruits and mysticism.

1. Where does the name House Papaya come from? The house is called House Papaya because I have a song called “Amor Papaya” which is perhaps not the best known but it is very iconic. The people who listen to me tend to associate this fruit with me. Almost every day I see stories of people going to the supermarket, seeing a papaya and tagging me in their photo or story. What I wanted, if I was going to share things about the house on social media, was for it to relate to something of mine, and the papaya served me more for the name than for the inspiration, because I don’t think the house is as tropical as a papaya. 2. For your house to be a home, what does it need to have?

This is where the music of Carlos Sadness is born. If you’d like to steal the look of Papaya House, discover this selection of Kave Home furniture and homewares.

For my house to be a home, it needs to have things that I identify with and that are a part of me. Things that I bring back from my travels, such as the masks I have in the studio, or like my father’s records or the paintings that I might have seen when I was little, like Rousseau or Hockney. Little things that I notice when I look around and instantly [ 71 ]

know that I’m in my territory. 3. What music can you hear playing in Carlos Sadness’s house? Around here it mostly sounds like bossa nova. Old bossa nova, like João Gilberto, those songs from the Ipanema neighbourhood in Brazil. I like having that as background music. And then it depends what you’re doing, for example when I’m cleaning, I put on something with a bit more bass. But in general a lot of bossa nova. 4. When you have guests, what do you like your home to transmit? What feelings do you want them to leave with? When I have guests I like them to connect with those things that we’ve talked about that are very me. Above all, what I bring back from my trips, which I don’t want to go on about but have somehow soaked it all up, and suddenly we find a photo that we took with this friend or that musician who accompanied me in Ecuador and we took a photo with a vintage car in the street. I really like having it there and having that friend come and find that memory of us together. 5. Where in the house do you find your inspiration? For me, the most inspiring and vibrant area of the house would be the living room. It is very

open, it has a corridor and an entrance, so I’m sort of forced to make it the place where I spend the most time because it is the one that encompasses most activities. The idea that I had for the house is that you could find a way to develop an idea or inspiration anywhere. I love the fact that you can be in the kitchen and if you find an idea that you like, you can get to work there right away and feel at ease. Often, changing what you’re doing at that moment breaks the main idea a little bit and I’m a strong believer in the instinct of ideas as they arise. I like being able to develop ideas in the place where they appear.

6. Where can you usually be found when you’re at home? In bed, sleeping. No... I really like the living room for its views of Barcelona, but there is also a garden with a space where I want to put a hammock and that will definitely be a good place to find me.

FUN FACTS

Did you know... 01 Kave Home is pronounced just like in English

/ keivh o um/

02 Kave Magazine Nº9

Our logo is shaped like the entrance to a cave, the earliest place of refuge for humans and where we first felt safe.

03 We chose red as our main brand colour as a way to differentiate ourselves from the neutral, pastel tones that are typical of other brands in this sector. And in line with our disruptive attitude and desire to revolutionise the industry, we chose red for its connotations of passion, another important strand of our DNA. PANTONE Warm Red

When we say that we’re a furniture brand that does things differently, it’s for a reason. We want to be remarkable in everything we do, no matter how small. Find out more at: KaveHome.com/FunFacts

Francesc Julià

05 Our headquarters are in Sils, a small town between Barcelona and Girona. We’re so proud of our stunning new offices that we’ve nicknamed them Beverly Sils. They’ve got everything! A product prototyping centre with ironwork, cabinetmaking and upholstery workshops, photography and video studios, workspaces for all key departments. Even a gym to help us stay in shape! Our offices are also energy efficient and powered entirely from 100% renewable sources.

[ 91 ]

Kave Magazine Nº9

It all began in a henhouse! (Our local Catalan version of a garage in Silicon Valley). Francesc Julià, founder of Kave Home, rented the building and turned it into a warehouse for his mattress and sofa bed distribution company. And that’s how our story began in 1982!
