JANHAVI NAIK ABOUT ME

I am a learner and an explorer. I look at architecture as a form Of living , as a process more than a practice which constantly evolves to introduce new forms . My method is process driven and I enjoy making visuals in different forms to communicate my ideas and thought.

What is a home? Home of Permenant Temporalities Naina Shah, the protagonist, stays in this house with her husband and her son . The house gets taken over by its objects which in turn take over their way of living . The interior gets blurred because each space gets merged with the other through certain objects which keep repeating in the house . The house belongs to Naina’s brother. There is a sense of ‘ temporary’ in the house and that gets reflected through the objects and the activities performed in the house . This becomes a contrast situation where one cannot find comfort even after living 30 years in the house . The design focuses on imagining the home as an unsettled expanse and then reimagining the space through scaffolds , where one can add and subtract elements as per their way of living .The scaffold helps in opening up the house to the cluster and form niches which could be used for sitting , keeping plants , hanging clothes etc. The house is further explored volumetrically , where a series of planes are created at different levels .Each plane is slightly higher than the other and extends out at different lengths , in such a way that not only an informal staircase gets formed but also a porous room gets created. What is a Factory? Factory as a Park The factory is a glass factory located in Vikhroli , Mumbai . The factory has a huge area of 11,000 sq ft and has various buildings for different functions . It is open for 24 hours throughout the week and the workers mainly work in three shifts. The numerous gardens and the pathways connecting each shed distinguishes it from a traditional exterior of a factory , the interior draws a contrast. The interior is completely taken over by the stark machinery which makes it dark, dingy , noisy and inhumane. The design focuses on reimagining the factory as a park. The approach was to build a form just outside the factory, one where the workers could easily meander , rest , eat , wait etc. The idea was to blur the boundaries between the inside and the outside . This was done by using a louvered facade , which would then provide pockets of small spaces for the workers and easy access to the park. .Further these continue into the built form which frames the factory for the

outsider and the landscape for the insider . The various pathways, openings , balconies , spaces below them not only invite the landscape in , but also provide spaces for the workers to release their tension . The intervention works with layers of frames which fold and extend to craft the park .These folds then become a planter , a bench etc . These create multiple levels , open , semi-open and double height spaces which combined with the greens give the experience of walking in a park . The multiple layers of the park act as a space for the workers to relax , eat , sleep, read etc not only during their breaks but even after their shifts or on a holiday thus shifting the environment to a less formal one.

Community center | Principles of Modularity The Intent was to explore a communitarian, artisanal, temporal and playful dimension of the idea of modularity. The community center is a space for the people of the adjacent settlement which acts as a tapri - an informal gathering space and expands into an exhibition space once a year .The material chosen for this project is bamboo. The assembly was done in such a way that the bamboo modules could create a form that would naturally help in harvesting rainwater. The module sits on a grid of 4.3 by 3.8 m .It gives rise to a porus form which could be invivitng as

Technological Sensoriums | Pavilion of Light The intent was to explore how different intensities of light contribute in determining the visibility of specific layers of objects, particles, and textures. It further extends to become a pavilion of light which sits on a park in Bogota, Colombia .The site is an in between space and becomes a commute route for many. The pavilion, thus tries to respond to these site conditions, where the movement of panels not only modulate the light , but also form degrees of private, semi private and public spaces The park becomes a active and safe space during the weekdays , as the pavilion becomes a coworking space during the weekdays ,and slides and opens up to form a larger open public space during the weekends. It brings an ever changing experience of light. The pavilion is a form with which people can interact and experience the ever changing play of light condition. It adds to the layer of publicness wherein it changes the way one thinks about recreation, by transforming the endless loop of walking .

Wetland Observatory | Cave of Learning The intent was to create a safe neighborhood by making a park which acts as a space of livelihood for the people from the settlements and the city to walk , and experience the terrain and the vegetation. The builform is imagined as an undulating form which creates various levels and a new ground for the park. These levels then become small pockets where shops , stalls etc could be set up. The experience of the imagined space could be something similar to that of trekking on a hill. The material chosen to deal with the terrain and the nature of the program was ferrocement. The internal spaces become cave-like where light seeps in through windows which also act as ledges and skylights. The layer of existing trees on the site adds a feeling of earthiness to the labs and research zones. Thus the experience of being in a conservatory is completely reimagined and there is a constant negotiation between the inside and the outside.

Poetics of Construction| Textile Museum The intent was to create a fragmented museum space, where the museum doesn’t become one large block but gets divided into a series of smaller blocks that get interconnected by corridors and make one meander in the space.Columns in between the spaces allow these individual blocks to flow into each other, they also help in visually connecting one space to the other, thus creating different vantage points to view the exhibition. Columns also break in the vast expanse of continuity that a museum usually has, and it makes you go into the space to view the entire exhibition.Concrete as a building material can not only act as a backdrop for these installations but also provide a stable structural system that can afford different volumes. The process started with identifying a grid of 5m and then designing spaces around it .The circulation was designed in such a way that one has to meander to reach spaces, thus making the corridors, not just a circulation space but also an informal museum space where artifacts could be displayed.

Retrofitting Home In my home, the rooms are flooded with light during the day, which makes the experience very monotonous and mundane. At the same time, very less light reaches the kitchen making it a comparatively low light space, thus restricting the activities .On the other hand , when the sun sets the entire house gets filled with shadows due to the nonuniform distribution of light of the tubelight. My interventions were made with an aim to create a semi permeable facade which filters the light that enters the space and hence, doesn't create uncomfortability in the habitable spaces. For this, I introduced the concept of jali walls and screens at various places. I also proposed moving the kitchen window to the facade and adding an angular window to enhance both the quality and quantity of light falling on the functional spaces.
