History of Huron Park

Municipal Rose Garden established in the mid-1930s.

The Huron Park Cemetery was known as Wyandot National Burying Ground. It was established in 1843, when the tribe, the Wyandot’s first arrived from Ohio. The tribe had been removed from their land and sent to Kansas City, Kansas. The land that had been given to them was a site of controversy because the land was to be sold for redevelopment, but because of Lyda Conley and her two sisters the park and cemetery was preserved and is still preserved throughout the years.

Location of Huron Park

The cemetery/park is located at North 7TH Street Traffic way and Minnesota Avenue in Kansas City

Vision for Huron Park

My mission for this community is to give hope, strength the community, and bring everyone together to a common place; to create new jobs and to have a place to learn new skills. My partner and I’s vision entailed creating a place where children and adults can come to learn, play, to work, and to provide a safe environment for everyone. As we analyzed the site, I came upon the conclusion that there needed to be an area of such- also there was something really important that was missing- food. There were no restaurants and no stands where people could go and buy food. Huron park is located in the middle of the heaviest bus transit and is also in the middle of all the government buildings. The area is highly populated and to have nothing was a concern. We wanted to implement strategies that could benefit everyone and change the atmosphere that could bring a community together.

Research & Prototype

Farmers Market A food market where local farmers sell fruit, vegetables, meat, cheese, and bakery products- but there are also types of farmers markets- that can include handmade items and art. Farmers markets can represent the single most economical and efficient way of getting healthy food to the communities that need it most.

Farmers Market have two systems that can be used to buy fresh produce- SNAP and EBT. SNAP stands for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and EBT stands for Electronic Benefits Transfer. These two monetary systems are given to those who have low wages, working part time, or unemplyed. Other people who benefit from the systems are the elderly, disabled, and those who are receiving welfare or other public payments. Everyone believes that even those that are less fortunate need to eat and live a healthy life. That is why farmers market accept these two monetary systems.

Protoype

Solar Panels

Wood Trusses

Concrete

The prototype is the structure for the farmers market. This structure can be implemented in any site. The purpose of the prototype is to provide shade and shelter for the customers and farmers but also generate and save energy.

Program & Conceptual Drawings

Film Support

In the beginning stage, figuring out the context of the surroundings, the circulation around the park, and the different elements that would play into the design of the film studio was crucial. In these diagrams, mapping out and figuring out where things go was essential to begin to design the building.
