Design Problem: Create a poster design for Earth Day

Solution: I wanted to combine the cliché Earth Day images that you see without using them in a cliché format. My approach was to show how nature is important to the earth, how nature is necessary in supporting the earth. For my color pallet I opted to veer away from the standard green and instead to use the brilliant orange of a sunset or sunrise. Created 2015.

Design Problem: Create an 11x17 Holiday Sale & Show poster design

Solution: My approach to this project was to create a warm comforting design that would reflect my emotion toward the holidays. Created 2014.

Graphic Design Design Problem: To create a design using surrealism in the style of Salvador Dali Solution: My approach to this project was to create something fun and yet surreal. The phrase about Art being larger than life kept running through my head. So that is exactly what I created, an applied art student in a situation where the art is larger than life. Created 2015.

Design Problem: The scope of this project was to create a self promotion poster advertising a fictitious showing of our works at the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum.

Solution: My concept behind this design was to create a setting that was complementary to our works. When thinking of a title for my show I came up with the “Ink Works” which made me think of a sort of grunge synonymous with graffiti. This made me think of alleys and brick walls, so I chose a marker font to use for my piece. Created 2015.

Design Problem: The scope of this project was to go into the Japanese garden at Sierra College and find a scene we found appealing and recreate it using a line work style we selected off a provided sheet.

Solution: I selected two different line styles for my sketches. The first was a light delicate style which I used for the shrine. The second was a darker more textured style which I used on the tree trunk. Created January, 2015.

Illustration Design Problem: Create an emotional line; then use it to create an animal

Solution: The line I created had a very bold presence that lent itself to the nature of the Eagle. Having an idea in mind I searched images of Eagles in nature to gain the right perspective. Using these images as inspiration I sketched out thumbnails to reinforce the layout before creating a rough image. I then created a refined sketch to use as a base before taking ink markers to the final piece. Created 2015.

Design Problem: Create a Goldberg style machine to transform a sphere to a cube in seven steps.

Solution: My concept was inspired by the Red Bull car with the can mounted on the roof. The car reminded me of a cannon which was perfect for starting off the process of transformation. Created 2015

Design Problem: The project was to create an organic volumetric design Solution: My concept was to create a design with depth, but still keeping a natural flow to the piece. To achieve this I used both texture and shading with ink markers as well as cool grey color markers Created 2015.

Design Problem: This was a class project to develop a character, background story, and show the character in several different positions and/or locations.

Solution: My Concept for this character was to create someone that anyone could identify with. I wanted her to be fairly plain looking of average height. I didn’t want to go with the cliché, beautiful, perfect looking character that was often seen in stories. Her clothing reflects her quiet casual personality. She always looks nice, but is always comfortable. The linework on this series is light for the character outlines keeping the darker linework for emphasis on textures and depth perception. Colorization was done with Prismacolor markers. Created 2015

Story Illustration Design Problem: This illustration was created as a class project for a published article titled Ghost in the Machine. This article was originally illustrated by the class professor and was presented to us as he had received it. The article was not yet written so there was only the title to go on and the requirement that the illustration must show internal parts of a computer.

Solution: My concept on this piece was that the ghost would be a supervisor or office manager of sorts whose job was to manage the flow of data being processed. To keep to the requirements I placed his desk in the center of the paths of circuits on a circuit board to symbolize the flow of data. The small robotic vehicles are moving the data (stacks of paper) to be processed by the ghost. This illustration was sketched in graphite, then outlined on tracing paper with ink markers. the texture details were added last. The finished illustration was scanned and colorized in Adobe Photoshop. Created 2014

Design Problem: This illustration was created as a class project for a published article about Starbucks vs Mom and Pop coffee shops. The article was originally illustrated by the class professor.

Solution: The implication of the article was that Starbucks would push individually owned coffee shops out of business by locating their locations nearby or next to already established businesses My approach to this problem was to show Starbucks as an immovable force coming through to steam roll over the competition. I wanted to symbolize both the steam roller as well as the individual coffee shop in a way that the viewer would be able to connect with. The illustration was first sketched in graphite. Then a final clean outline was created on tracing paper with ink markers. The detail textures were all added last by hand with ink markers. The completed illustration was scanned and colorized in Adobe Photoshop. Created 2014.
