PROJECT OVERVIEW & CONCEPT
Project Info:
Headquarters
The project is located in an existing building in the historic Presidio district of San Francisco. It is to design a new West Coast headquarters for the National Geographic Society. The project includes an exhibition space, retail store, and cafe on the first level with private offices on the second level.
Client Profile: National Geographic Society
National Geographic is a global nonprofit organization committed to exploring and protecting our planet. It is based in Washington DC in 1888 as a small group of travelers and their patrons in the late Victorian Age. The Society started the magazine that covered a wide variety of world cultures and natural resources with a particular emphasis on maps and high-quality photography shortly after its founding. National Geographic currently has a little under 2000 employees in various offices.

Maze - A network of paths and hedges designed as a puzzle through which one has to find a way.
Concept Statement:
The concept for this project is inspired by the mazes. Exhibitions in museums usually do not have clear wayfinding. Some visitors often have to go round and try a second way to exit, just like they are going through the mazes. A maze is about discovery, and the client, National Geographic, is all about exploration. Because of this simple relation between the concept idea and the client, visitors will feel like they are in a maze but with better wayfinding when entering the National Geographic Headquarters. By achieving the goal, one of the design features will include the connecting 90-degree line element.

Genki
- Origin of energy
Concept Statement:
The project’s concept is inspired by the Japanese phrase Genki. Since most Japanese elderly are positive towards their health and living, and the site location is in an environmentally friendly city, the senior living center will vibrantly reflect those characteristics through two types of energy - liveliness and warmness. The common areas will carry an engaging atmosphere, and the studio apartments will embrace the homelike feeling. The design will include both bright and warm colors, soft textures, and wood materials for the first and second levels to achieve the goal.

Woodland - Forest, green, a land covered with natural plants
Concept Statement:
The concept for this project is inspired by the woodland. Since a farm-to-table restaurant defines a healthy dining style and the client’s wish of having a warm and inviting space, audiences will have the feeling of surrounded by a woodland forest when they walk into the space. The design will include a neutral color palette with different material textures to present the concept idea.

Lively - Full of life and energy; active and outgoing
Concept Statement:
The concept for this project is inspired by common families and households. Since all three levels of the building are lived by different residents, the designs for these spaces need to be flexible. Tenants will see bright, warm, and cozy arrangements when they enter the spaces. The designs will have a natural color palette with a touch of bold colors, wood materials, and soft textures to achieve this aesthetic.
