INTRODUCTION BARCELONA: BUILDING, CITY AND LANDSCAPE SCALE WORKSHOP_JULY 13-17 2015

Barcelona is at the fingertips of architecture students ready to be discovered! We want everyone to understand the value of architecture BARCELONA: BUILDING, CITY AND LANDSACPE SACLE is an intensive one-week course develops in three phases, to delve into Barcelona’s urban faces: building form, public life and land matters, designed and conducted by the Arquitectura Reversible Organization. The specific emphasis of the workshop is related with cultural and architectural research; drawing for design; city centre and peripheral areas as well as creative eco proposals. Visits to architectural and urban works within Barcelona have been organize to encourage the students to engage in cultural and architectural research as well as becoming familiar with producing sketch studies and personal proposals from real life. Organised both chronologically and thematically, the workshop takes you on a global journey of 20th and 21st century architecture, with highlights such as colourful modernistes houses in Eixample; subtle evocations of technology as found in Sagrada Familia by Gaudi; creative propositions that give a hint to finding different ways to act; the incredible urban transformation of the seafront with the Olympics or the always controversial relation between built and nature landscapes. Dedicated to free hand visualization methods of analytic and emotional drawing, ability to simply document the built world and explores the power of draw to reveal wider truths about architecture is required; focusing to celebrate the interplay of draw, architecture and life – as well as creating new portraits of Barcelona for our time, by the participants. The first sketch of the day will be a series of sequential handcrafted drawings when the day ends. Each sketch made could also introduce a new technique, culminating in a final cityscape composition Into next pages we organize everyone’s drawings, pictures and writings as a portfolio ready format. It was a pleasure to share this experience with you all. Now is time for you to enjoy the final result too. Take your time to do so and welcome back anytime. Barcelona features a healthy pedestrian friendly city space having wide walkways, narrow streets, numerous stoplights, and “ramblas” lined with deciduous trees, benches and a mix of shops and restaurants with al fresco dining spaces all leading to the beautiful sea. The simple boxy forms of the buildings in Barcelona are made lively by the protruding balcony and eaves on every unit as combined with a unique combination of colors and ornamentation on each façade, giving them texture, rhythm, unity and character. Gaudi´s style of 360o aesthetics can be seen in all of his works in which a play of form, texture, color, light and shadow is adjusted and optimized to conform to the perspective of the viewer in any which angle. He is also fond of using symbolisms from nature ant the church in all of his designs.

The urban plan of Barcelona includes a tapered grid layout, breaking the large area into a smaller sustainable and resilient scale equipped with a pedestrianized network of roads and walkways leading to multiple nodes and colorful mixed use areas that generate the community´s economy and social activity.

Gaudi was able to create a perfect harmony of aesthetics and function in almost all of his designs. He aimed for resiliency and sustainability, considering natural daylighting, cross ventilation, temperature regulation, and energy efficiency camouflaging them as aesthetical features in human scale. While he was at it, he would also use recycled and vernacular materials in the overall design of each structure.

I think it´s important that an architect should be well versed with his observation on the environment, I figured that sketching out what impressed me would help out with my application with concepts and design. I liked how a picture is composed, the interaction between the people and the buildings; I also like how certain displays of stills can convey emotions, such as the geese I saw in the Barcelona Cathedral. One of the more interesting pictures I took would be the man painting in one of the common spaces in Barcelona. Driving out of whim, I sketched a marble sculpture of Can and Abel; the thing that interests me with sculptures is the play on light and the composition of lines and attention to detail, which is something that´s attached to sketching the sculpture. Some of the greatest minds in the classical era had sketches of a lot of conventional things you see in nature, which later on led to the most interesting ideas of their century.

Barcelona, Spain is a nice place and i will always appreciate the scenes and structures I saw. I learned a lot from this experience even oust for few days touring the city. Aside from the picturesque views, I also appreciate the people and residents of Barcelona for being nice and disciplined as citizens. There are so many ideas I can learn from here that I could use and adapt in the future as an aspiring architect. It is really a part of the process to experience different views outside from your own hometown. Gaining knowledge does not only work inside the classrooms, but also through learning and getting opinions from your blockmates. Inspite of the usual class setting of learning, enchasing our keen senses to various culture and tradition really help us maximize being good observers. The whole experience that I will be gaining in this tour surely make me a better architect in the future. Touring around Barcelona with our tour guides helps a lot because we get to listen lectures and history about the surroundings. Throughout the whole experience I gained in my first week in Spain, I can already say what I expected before has already been accomplished. This made my year very colorful with full of learnings and experiences. As I continue my stay here in Spain, I hope to get more inspirations so I could use them in the nearest future for my dream profession. Truly this is a magnificent journey for me and my school-mates. I really hope to maximize my stay and be able to come back in this wonderful place. I hope to be able to study and get my master´s degree here in Spain.

Being given a chance to explore the city of Barcelona even just for a week, I can say that Barcelona is truly a one of a kind place that everyone especially architecture students like us should experience in a first-hand basis. I never thought that this trip was more wonderful than I ever thought, except to the fact that we came here on a scorching summer. Each trip of every day of the week was great! On our first day, we were given a chance to meet the Kim and Sam who were our tour guides for the whole week. They were very approachable and very transparent with regards to the culture here in Barcelona. Not only with the culture but also with the history, how the urban planning went through ages, the government, the food they love, the streets to shop with and others.

I loved how very informative they were in sharing their thought and answering each questions that the students asked. Well, of course, this trip wouldn’t be as exciting as it is if we are not with them. In comparison to our homeland, Philippines, Barcelona is way more beautiful than our country. I am very amazed how the urban planning and how the technology works here in Barcelona, not like in our country, some architects tend to just design a structure without compromising the materials and even how the way it looks together with the other building that in the end it looks awkward. This whole workshop has given me more possibilities on how to give a solution in designing structures for Manila especially the ECO DIY in which they use recycled materials to create a new healthy structure to avoid sick building that might also harm its inhabitants. This is also good for our future for the next generation for it lasts longer and more stable than other toxic materials used in constructing a building. I just want to include that Sagrada Familia is the bomb. Antoni Gaudi is such an amazing architect to create such ornamented structure, also I salute those people in charge of the continuing construction of the Sagrada just by depending on insights of Antoni from the past to continue it and finish what he started. Not just the Sagrada Familia but every building created in the city is just magnificent. No words can describe how organized the planning of the city was created, I just want to rebuild Manila just like Bacelona! I am definitely going back here in Barcelona not just with my friends but with my family to share them the happiness and joy I got while I stayed in the old yet wonderful city.

Through these years, I never expect that I will be going to Barcelona, Spain and to see the madness of the structures and every detail of those. It was a beautiful 5 days of my life because I get to see spectacular structures and learn new things about architecture. From its historical buildings to the modern ones.

Day 1: Poblenou Day 2: Palau Guell Day 3: Flying Buttress Day 4: Bamboo from Eco-DIY Day 5: Green Building

It’s undeniable that Barcelona is a beautiful escape for art enthusiast. The workshop helped me a lot and I know that I would be able apply it in my program in College. On our first day we met our guide for the whole week, Kim and Sam were very accomodating. I love how they made the whole week interesting for us despite the hot temperature in Barcelona. They shared a lot of things from the culture of Spain to its modern age.

On the first day of the tour, we were able to exploring the city and some of Antoni Gaudi’s works. I saw how beautiful Barcelona is and fell in love at that moment. We went to Parc Guell and Passeig De Gracia. It was immensely beautiful. The second day was full of walking, despite the hot weather I was able to make it because of the beautiful structures that we saw. Palau Guell’s rooftop was mesmerizing. We visited some modern buildings such as the Torre Agbar and the University of Barcelona. Third day was one of the most unforgettable moment in my life because I get the chance to see the Sagrada Familia. It had me in tears, because of its intricate features. It was truly a masterpiece of the God’s Architect, Antoni Gaudi. The heat and the tiring walks was all worth it when I stepped inside. Fourth day, we had our lessons on Eco DIY, I know that this lesson will help me a lot in designing structures. I learned that architecture can help eliminate negative impacts on nature through sensible designing. Fifth day was tiring but wonderful. I was able to see during the bike tour the different sights and scenes on the other side of Barcelona. I got tan as well because of the heat but it paid off when I saw the ruins of some structures. The 5-day workshop of reversible arquitectura helped a lot in moulding my thinking towards architecture. And I will always be thankful for this kind of opportunity.

Barcelona opened my eyes to the many possibilities of urban planning. Learning about how architects and the government regenerated Barcelona inspired me to think about how my own country could also improve, especially Manila. I wish we could adapt some of the ideas, most especially their ways of allowing light and better ventilation in their cramped spaces. Other than the UTY´s urban planning, I also took notice of the deconstructivism in the buildings and their contrast with the classic styles of the buildings in the city. I hope that in the Philippines more architects would include design deconstructed to give a nice contrast to the tropical styles present. The highlight of my Barcelona trip though, was seeing the works of Antoni Gaudi. His intricate works are all beautiful, not to mention breathtaking. I really like how his works never go out of his style. He inspires me to be a better designer and planner. I am glad that I grabbed the opportunity to travel to Barcelona. This trip has taught me more ideas in urban planning, appreciation of the classic styles and the importance of sketching. I will definitely input all I learned in my future designs and works.

The time I went to Barcelona Growing up in the Philippines, we have been taught since day 1 about the colonization of our country by Spain. Starting from Magellan’s expedition which led him to discover our country in the city of Cebu in the Philippines and introduced culture and religion to our just-then discovered country. I have always imagined Spain as a place with a rich historical buildings and a rich culture. My expectation of Barcelona’s architecture was it was going to be filled with structures created in the classical period, gothic and renaissance era. The reality of it is that they take their rich heritage, rather destroying it and building a new structure, and build around it and then creates a strong contrast between the old building and the new one. When we first started this workshop we were shown the history of Barcelona and how it evolved and adapted to the changing needs of its citizens. From the walled city and its refusal to expand its boundaries to the city plans of the Barcelona we know and see today. I am in awe of the progressive city of Barcelona on how it took the problems of its time and until now, they are analyzing and researching for solutions to create a better city for their citizens. During the week we were taken to the main axis of the city of Barcelona which was Passieg de Gracia and was shown Gaudi’s works such as the La Pedrera and the Casa Batllo. Then later on the week was taken to the streets of the old convents which were converted to universities and museums and Txema, the eco building showcasing healthy architecture. To cap off the week long workshop was a biking tour around the countryside of Barcelona. While we were not in class, we were exploring the vicinity of our hotel and the other attractions of Barcelona. The grid plan of the city caught my attention because it creates repetition yet still remains unique and distinct from each other. How the expansion of the city of Barcelona consisted of axis’s to create a hierarchy of spaces within it. I am interested in city planning and wish that one day in the future that Manila and the rest of the Philippines will be planned in this manner. In a manner that pedestrian circulation is a big consideration and that public transportation is prioritized to lessen the use of private vehicles. Consideration of the circulation of the city’s vehicles and its people is important. It is often forgotten in the Philippines and it was refreshing to be in a city for roughly a week that takes their roads and circulation seriously. Being in a developed city away from Manila showed me that there are more things left to do for the Philippines and we are not even half way there yet. As an aspiring architect who is interested in the field of urban planning, I believe that this workshop was a great way to be exposed to a well-planned city.

Barcelona is my favorite city that I would like to travel. This is the best place for tourism because of its churches, monuments and the places itself. There are lots of memorials in its museum covering most of the historic events. There are lots of eye-catching structures visible throughout the city. Many famous architects like Gaudi have displayed their abilities by developing amazing buildings and make it be one of the most interesting cities for tourists intruded in cathedrals like me. I spotted many delightful shops filled with odd curiosities and treasures and finally make some peace of the crazy crowded streets and happen into the gorgeous place, a playa lined with beautiful fountains, elegant cafes and grand architecture. Barcelona was the main city of Catalunya where at the time Gaudi arrived. There was a large anarchist independence movement. Like the followers of this movement Gaudi loved Catalunya about everything else. For that reason the major influence on his work were modernism oriental and Gothic Architecture all of them are traditional Catalunyan styles. There was a foreign movement like the arts and crafts impressionism and Art Noveu were also discussed. Art Noveu is the movement that influenced Gaudi the most, stimulating him to experiment with a new materials and new changes. Thereby helping him to give up and find his new ways. Opportunities afforded by Catalunya´s economic and political environment were endless. Catalonian such as Antoni Gaudi innovated the region´s diverse art techniques in their works. By mimicking nature such as artist symbolically pushed back the provinces non-industrial increasing. This best known designs of the early 1900 include two house the Casa Batllo and the Casa Mila. He also planned the hillside Park Guell. Gaudi´s most famous structure is probably the unfinished church of Sagrada Familia.

Lost in Barcelona Losing your way among the cobbled side streets of Barcelona is an easy misadventure. Once you stop to appreciate your surroundings, you realize they are welcome detours, holding the nostalgia of rustic Spain. Perhaps what is most eye-catching is how these centuries old elements are juxtaposed with modern civilization. It is a glaring contrast to Manila’s own attempts to “modernize” society by way of tearing down old structures in order to make space for new buildings, which more often than not fail to give justice to the former structures. In the Philippine city center, you can rarely find open lots wherein young couples, walking students, of even strolling elders can simply sit down and enjoy the sound and green of nature. It is an almost impossible luxury. In Barcelona, the air is cleaner, the streets less busy, and the people more carefree. The structures are always made with so much consideration to the environment and its users, one can only wish this humaneness was as present in the Philippines. It poses a high bar for us future architects to reach. The picturesque vistas of Barcelona will always be a beauty for which to be envied. Glass structures and midrise buildings blend oddly well on the streets. It is a breathtaking take on the concept of “modernity”, to mix the past with the possible future. For these, I truly feel unfamiliar walking the streets of Barcelona--just a stranger in a strange land. For now, I can only stop to admire benches along the street, or the little bakery around the corner. Surrounded by such natural beauty, I can only remain lost in Barcelona, yet be glad for it.

Our first destination in my first euro-trip is the breath taking city of Barcelona.Rich in history, culture food and architecture ,Barcelona is surely worth going back to when you want to kick back and relax. For sure everyone will all miss Barcelona’s unique, octagonal block city planning because of its simplicity and efficiency compared to Manila’s urban planning.Parks, public spaces are so abundant here within the city of Barcelona that its idea alone is alien to us filipinos who in turn have twice as much roads back at home but still has major traffic problems. I feel that my fellow countrymen have made a grave mistake while they were urbanizing the country.Although we were one of the leading countries in Asia. We got too carried away with urban growth that we forgot that people are part of it and now we suffer from overpopulation, pollution ,congestion of cars and public transport.

One thing that striked me the most, and is a bit saddening for me is that we lack the energy and drive compared to the students here. A great example was the Bio build project of the students of Colleg d’Arquitectes de Catalunya. I really do admire how a group of students common interest lead to a voluntary group project which later developed into a communal project where everyone is free to participate Learn and fund this simple project. Bio Build has also taught me one important thing on how to be efficient. It starts with a question,”what do we have”. And it doesnt even matter if its scrap parts of houses. it is evident in the eco DIY house that scrap parts can apparently enchance the buildings aesthetics and it’s economical character. Barcelona has taken my breath away with its architectural innovation and its historical buildings, but none can compare with the mind of Antoni Gaudi, an 18th century architect of barcelona. he is the mastermind of the massive sagrada familia and even to the finest details of the tiles and lampposts of Passeig de Gracia. his architectural prowess has given him the chance to make Guell ,an affluent and influential person at the time, his mansion and park which is now a museum and a government owned park respectively. But there is no doubt that Sagrada Familia is his crown jewel, even though he wont see the day where it would be completely built. His designs for the cathedral gives us the atmosphere of an alien yet heavenly space because of its never before seen design in the span of two centuries. Even up to his date we are still baffled by Gaudi’s eccentric design of Sagrada Familia. the addition of Our modern and minimalistic design to his initial design surprisingly mixes well with his classical montage of statues in the facade of the church. If i were to choose which of the two spaces are better (interior, exterior), I would say that the interior is much better because of the light and color of the stained glass. So far everyone has really enjoyed their stay in Barcelona, and we really do feel blessed that we get to have this rare opportunity to have our workshops abroad and especially in such a beautiful and exotic place such as Barcelona. We hope in the future that we might have another collaboration with Reversible Arquitectura and learn more from each other in hopes of a brighter future.

From what I saw in Barcelona, I observed that the Government and people of Barcelona are prioritizing the refurbishing and regeneration of spaces with the intention of a space where people could gather and socialize with one another. They also have the good intention of preserving the cultural heritage through innovative architecture, from old buildings to the dunes, the concept of contrasting ideas that mutually benefit and benefit each other is what astonishes me and the intention is greatly appreciated. I also like the process of preservation and refurbishing by using indigenous materials such as wood or earth. Such idea is a great help in reducing the growing threat of climate change, another preservation Barcelona is prioritizing. What I also like is the grid planning of Barcelona. It astonishes me to see how uniformed the blocks are, and per block buildings surround an open area in the center of the block, creating a space where citizens could socialize. Although for me one would be easily become lost because of similar looking chamfers, but also one could be easily become lost on the magnificence of the perfect planning of the city, truly a masterpiece in urban planning.

When it comes to specific structures, I really love the works of Antoni Gaudi, especially the Sagrada Familia, a true obra maestra. After seeing the Sagrada Familia, it made my jaw drop on how detailed the church is. I’m also impressed at Gaudi for giving everything up just for the sake of finishing a truly beautiful church, and today his vision of the church is being realized thanks to the good intention of Barcelona. I also like his style of Art Noveau, because it looks rebellious but still beautiful. Criticized it may be back then, for me it really is beautiful and the effect is timeless, the designs stands out in any period of Architecture, a trait that should be visible to all designs. When it comes to modern buildings and sculptures, the works of Santiago Calatrava truly stands out, also an engineering masterpiece, by using tensile concepts in his works, for me, it creates an idea of an impossible architecture turned into reality. And from what I see, modern buildings would influence its surrounding and neighboring buildings to adapt to its style of architecture. To sum it all up, the city of Barcelona is truly majestic and beautiful, where old architecture merges with modern lifestyle, where modern architecture merges with culture and tradition, a city where it’s Government and citizens truly appreciate and prioritize sustainability and history of the city.

BARCELONA: BUILDING, CITY AND LANDSCAPE SCALE WORKSHOP_JULY 13-17 2015

One of the things that I really liked in Barcelona is its urban planning. Starting from day 1, we encountered different open spaces in Barcelona. In our country, open spaces is one of the least visible space because it is considered a waste of space, but in Barcelona, it is one of the most visible space and it has this wide vicinity that is very important in ventilation. It also has this greenery that correlates with the open spaces in Barcelona. I actually admire its urban planning because it is very opposite in Manila and also the sizes of the structures are very different. Day 2 was a very memorable part of the tour because we get to see Palau Güell. One of the things that I really like in Palau Güell are its stained glass windows. It has this royalty effect on the structure and it emits colorful lighting inside Palau Güell which looks beautiful. Palau Güell also has a lot of skylights. The one that I was really impressed of is the atrium at the basement of Palau Güell and also the open voids on the ceiling which gives lighting at its basement. Another statement of urban planning that Barcelona has is the functuionality of spaces. I like the idea of how some of the structures in Barcelona has its private and public spaces that is also a strategic way of gathering people especially if the structure is for business. Moslty the ground floor area of the structure serves as a public space or commercial space which keeps the structure crowded that can be an advantage in promoting the structure then all its upper floors are for office areas or residential areas.

Barcelona is a city which is full of historical areas. I really liked how they were able to preserve all its historical areas. Also one of the things that i was impressed about in Barcelona is on how they give importance to natural habitat of animals and others. During our days of the tour, we went to a beach where there are so many birds. That beach was restricted for people because it is an area where birds lay their eggs. Another is that they have this land full of crops and other plants where it is rented to people in Barcelona who want to have their own sources of food. It is really interesting that they have this importance on agriculture and also on their historical places. Barcelona is really an amazing city, thank you for the tiring but fun tour. It is really a memorable one=)

Reflection Back in Manila, we studied about different architectural styles in our “History of Architecture” subject. We tackled Gothic Architecture, Renaissance Architecture, Eclecticism style and many more. Being able to see these structures in person is surreal. I had the privilege to visit Spain and learn from it´s architects. Seeing the works of Antoni Gaudi is an experience I would never forget. I appreciated how the structures of Spain merged classical and modern architecture in a wonderful blend. Among all the cathedrals we visited, the Sagrada Familia stood out and caught my attention. I like how intricate the details were in one façade and massively simple it was in the other. I also liked how every part of it was a different architectural style. With this, one would be able to make up a whole new style. When I entered the cathedral, I instantly noticed the majestic stained glass windows. I liked how they manipulated the light coming from the sun to entirely change the interior or the cathedral. The wonderful mansion, turned museum of Antoni Gaudi named Palau Guell was also one of the highlights of my trip. It displays a wide selection of innovative building materials. One of which was the steel door located in the entrance. From the outside, it entails the privacy of the residents. But whole visibility and ventilation could be seen from the inside. I also liked how Antoni Gaudi utilized light and space to manipulate the aura in the structure. Most of Antoni Gaudi´s works takes inspiration from organic forms. I liked how the Casa Batllo came out from the form of a lizard, a skull and bones. He manages to manipulate organic forms into unusual eye-catching structures. After seeing Barcelona and it´s richness in architecture styles, my knowledge in architecture widened. It is very different from what we have in the Philippines. During my stay in Barcelona, I observed that the street corners are tapered to widen the road intersections and be able to add parking lots. These gave me ideas that I could use to further improve Philippines in the architectural sense.

Barcelona - A city of social intervention and cultural intersection The initial impression of the city of Barcelona before the trip wasn’t particularly spectacular. It was the notion of conventionality that swept across my mind when I tried to comprehend the things I would be doing and experiencing during the one week stay at Barcelona. Never have I been so wrong in my life. From the moment I saw the glimpse of the glittering beachfront of the Barceloneta strip above air, I knew that it was going to be an ecstatic experience.

Coming from a very under developed country and metro of Manila, the city of Barcelona was nothing but wonder and amusement. From the innovative structures built to the properly planned built environment and the urban fabric, it was my idea of utopia. Navigating from one end to the other was a breeze. This made me think twice on the urban development of a certain city or even a metropolis. Barcelona didn’t have roads as wide as metro Manila, nor wasn’t it particularly larger than metro Manila, yet it managed to be efficient and straight forward in terms of transportation and social intervention. The layers of urban fabric growing on top of each other was amazing. Old and new layers of history overlaying each other, creating a new and unique ambiance and atmosphere. The ample spaces utilized for public use and its role as a social intervention and cultural intersection gave me a moment to remember. It was not short of any lacking rather it was an evident development and growth from an old city to a buzzling smart city. It was comfortable seeing how the community as a whole contributes to the wonderful cultural melting pot of the city. From the Ramblas to the posh boulevard of the Passeig de Gracia, the role of the socio-civic interactions created a city so rich and unique. A creation of its own identity, a notion for development and a goal for the ultimate Mediterranean city. These are the things I saw during my stay in Barcelona. Furthermore, the ratio of tourist and immigrants from all around the world created a magnificent cultural melting pot for new ideas and cultural exchange. Learning new things every day. The integration of new development and blending them to the old city of Barcelona was another sight to see. Respecting the older creations and integrating them with the modern development of the global society has never been so meticulously done. As a whole, the city of Barcelona isn’t like any other. It’s impossible to see another city so rich and grandeur of history and culture. Exploring Barcelona was like seeing a film strip rolling in front of my eyes. Time was short to explore more of Barcelona. Time is never enough for Barcelona due to its rapid pace in development not only in its urban state but also in its social and cultural growth. This is my experience of Barcelona. A city of social intervention. A city of cultural intersection.

Antoni Gaudí and his use of opening and his with aesthetic and function. The Barcelona museum when the old and the new come together. Art Nouveau tiles of Gaudí show that he could relate to both feminine and masculine or edgy styles. Barcelona love for art could be scene even in the most unlikely places such as the beach where the rocks look like a work of Frank Gehry. The market shows how some common place could be beautiful just by adding a few more accents and décor and anything could be like that just like the bridge I drew.

Barcelona has always been something that made me curious ever since I watched the Disney Channel original film; “The cheetah girls”. The story showed how a group of four girls went to spain to pursue their dreams of becoming singers. Other than a musical and a movie about dreams and sparkles it also showed the best of Spain. The first day in Barcelona involved us going around by ourselves and there are a lot of thing I discovered in Spain especially about its architecture. Its city planning involves a grid. I think this was very smart of their urban planners. Their city is pretty easy to navigate especially for someone who doesn’t know how to commute since I usually compare it to the setting in manila. Spain involves art in every corner of their city. I feel like their city is well planned in such a way that every part of the city has a certain scene. Every place differs from another. Las Ramblas’ scene involves the hustle bustle of the market but even though there are countless shops in the market there is some organized chaos, passeige the gracia is the major shopping district. Gaudi quickly became one of favorite architects because of his style which is Art Noveou. His way of applying his styles in his projects. He applies it in such a way that it will make a statement but its not too overbearing. I also like the way his approach to openings in a house. He focuses on the aesthetic and at the same time the impact of its function. Barcelona trip definitely had a big impact on how it could change my style in designing. I realized that when it comes to gaudi ornamentation is a big part but it is also important to make it functional. I also like how in the Gaudi house he used curves in the exterior and he put it in the windowds and baclonies because usually in art noveou style structures I usually makes buildings too feminine, although I can be wrong with that notion but that is what I feel from what I’ve seen so far. Gaudi makes art noveou look edgy, people will ba able to relate to it. Going to Barcelona has always been on my bucketlist but I never expected to learn so much from the land with so much history but brought so much to the modern world.

As an architecture student, being able to have the opportunity to visit Europe and see the works of the great architect Gaudi is something I will never forget. I have always dreamed of visiting Europe and now I am here. After learning about Renaissance and Gothic architecture in my history class, I was able to appreciate the architecture of Barcelona, Spain more. From the Renaissance apartments along the streets to the great Gothic cathedrals in Spain, I was able to learn and appreciate more the intricate details of the structures. Despite of the modernization of the world, I´m glad that Barcelona still preserved their old structures in many different ways. By using modern technology, Barcelona was able to enrich its old structures by giving them life again. One of my favorite visits was the flat of the Arquitectura Reversible. I really admired the interior of this flat because the flat looks modern at the same time you can still see classic style elements in it. My favorite part of the flat was the part on the wall where in the owner left out an old part of the wall finish as an accent to the plain white wall. This accent really made a difference on the overall appearance of the office. My second favorite part in the flat was the pantry renovated from a room which was previously a balcony. I really like the room due to its natural lighting and old window which looks like it´s magnifying the structures outside. My favorite cathedral would, of magnificent light vaulted ceilings greets you with colorful natural lighting. I really liked the fact that Gaudi played with the sunlight´s colors to enhance the beauty of his interior. After seeing the wonderful architecture in Barcelona, my knowledge in architecture deepened and my imagination widened. I learned to appreciate Barcelona more due to its details and it´s city planning.

Barcelona is a city which loves its people and its environment. And through architecture, both nature and human civilization is being cared for. In return, not only the people of Barcelona appreciates its architecture but also the millions of people living in different countries. Throughout my stay in Barcelona, I have learned a lot about not only the old buildings, but also the new ones. I have seen how overlooked details such as how the environment is utilized with the airport/airplane pollution and noise is being carefully planned. Details that other cities take for granted such as the integration of public spaces is applied everywhere. To my surprise, it did become an effective way to unite the people of Barcelona together. I have also noticed how every building, every room, and every corner is often being touched by natural light. There are courtyards, skylights and opening everywhere. One of which is the Palau Guell. Many of its rooms are being lit by natural light. And because of that, only a few artificial lights are used. It is amazing to see how even the underground horse stables of the structure is mostly being lit by natural light. The application of this kind of light does not only make the structure more sustainable, but it also keeps human beings close to nature. Overall, the architecture of Barcelona is sustainable, community friendly, functional and iconic. Old valuable pieces of architecture are being preserved and new beautiful ones are being constructed. The whole place is practically filled up with useful and very appealing structures. I hope to become an architect who hold the values of nature, functionality and the need for a community in the buildings I design. I also do hope that other countries, such as my own, would appreciate architecture more just like how the people of Barcelona love its architecture.

Daniel The Explorer Spain is one of the most influential country that settled in our country their culture, style of architecture, ways of living greatly affected the Philippines. This architectural trip planned by the University of Santo Tomas is my key to actually learn stuff from the Spanish culture itself. If you looked at the historical remains or historical treasures of our country you will notice the impact of the Spanish architectural style from roofing to flooring and crafts and all that.

In our first day of stay in Barcelona I actually felt like its home everyone is so kind and humble to us throughout our whole stay in Barcelona. The very first time we went out I already felt the history that revolves the around the buildings by just simply looking at it and studying its details. The workshop opened my eyes to some new and some old style of architecture of the Spanish culture. Most of the times the workshop is tiring and I get to that point where I would just think “Can I just lay down ad sleep for a bit” but I never did give up cause if I did I wouldn’t be able to see the works of some famous historical architects of Spain and get to learn the twists and turns around the city. The whole tour and lectures from our lectors actually helped me a lot. It opened my eyes to much larger scale of ideas for innovative styles of architecture. I gained knowledge, appreciation for their culture, their ways of living. Sometimes I just want to stay in Barcelona because I’ve fallen in love with everything about it. I don’t have any negative view for their style of architectural work I just loved every detail of it. I liked how they united the nature with modernist and old architectural buildings. Just the planning of the whole area like squares all throughout made it look cooler and beautiful to look at and the traffic flow is just divine, you will not see clogged streets anywhere. The buildings are also not that high which actually is great because you can actually see the whole view of the entire sky line. Their solution for that limited height is by going underground. The planning of the trains were also great because of its unlimited passage ways which helps you go around Barcelona without hassle in mind. Now we are in Granada and tomorrow in Seville I hope that I’ll learn stuff like the ways they taught us in the workshop. Every minute of this trip is actually worth it in many ways. I just hope to see this type of planning and style of architecture in the near future for the Philippines. No more clogged streets, nature and city are one, great planning for trains and trams and many more. I could use this ideas to help the Philippines to get up from its standards today.

We learned about the importance of sketching and analyzing the environment for the development of a concept. Not only the existing buildings can be an inspiration but also interesting sculptures and even the situations happening around. Seeing various styles or architecture in Barcelona in person is a very important educational experience for me. I was able to compare the structures, planning, and the interaction of the people with the environment from what I usually see from my country.

My journey here in Barcelona Spain is very unforgettable, I will not forget the one that we went through especially the Barcelona Cathedral, Sagrada Familia, etc. I really had a great time taking pictures, walking, sightseeing, sketching things and especially gaining knowledge and learning the culture of Spain. As the years pass by, when I become an Architect, this will be one of my inspiration, in making or designing structures especially churches in the Philippines. I observed that the church in the Philippines is not that great as the church here in Spain. I want to be the first one to make Cathedrals in the Philippines as beautiful as Barcelona Cathedral, Sagrada Familia. I really learned a lot here in Spain just seeing and experiencing the structures. This is really one of my great experience in my life. I could also share my experience from moments and photos to my family and friends. I am really thankful I have given the opportunity to experience and learn the structure and culture of Spain. Gracias!

WU, HAN SANTO TOMAS UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE

Hola! First of all, I would like to introduce myself. Hello to everyone! My name is Han Wu. I am a Chinese citizen currently residing in Manila, Philippines. I am enrolled in the University of Santo Tomas College of Architecture. Being an undergrad, I know my designs are limited but I am very pleased to have this chance to see the outside world and the amazing Barcelona, Spain. These past week has been an inspiration and an encouragement to me because I was exposed to countless amazing designs where it unlocked different opportunities for me to utilize and apply it when I depart back to Manila. I’ve always wanted to visit Europe. Ever since I was a kid, it has been a dream to explore the spectacular cities in Europe. Now that I am here, it is really a dream come true. Everywhere I go, it feels different and new. This is the kind of experience that not all people can comprehend. Being an architecture student, exposing myself with globalized designs truly amazes me. While on the way home one day, as I was ridding the subway back to our hotel, I saw a tagline on an eco bag that a person was carrying. It said, “Think Global, Stay Local.” Immediately this hit me and inspired me to apply it on my designs. As young as I am, I should prepare my mind to comprehend these concepts. Thinking globally will be able to make my design unique and at the same time globally competitive. Staying locally will be able to allow me to consider the users and their traditions and customs of the given area. By combining these two ideas/concepts together, just the imagine the output of the design. Although, in the Philippines, we don’t get to see and feel the importance of design that much in structures. People like everything to be just conventional and traditional. This is also one of the reasons why Filipino Architects are limited when they design. In my opinion, such mindset should be transformed. As I was strolling down the streets of Barcelona, one thing that hit me the most was the amazing city planning. Every block was carefully designed and redesigned to be more spacious, safe, and smooth both vehicular and pedestrian traffic. And just as Barcelona, I hope and pray that someday, Philippines will be able to transform into an extraordinary, green, and smart country through proper care and planning of future Architects, Engineers, and Urban Planners. I guess I can say that this is a one of a kind experience for me since I’ve never been anywhere else aside from China, Philippines, and Korea. The diversity of designs that I saw here is truly extraordinary. I never thought that heritage conservation could be protected so carefully. Architects such Anthony Gaudi truly displayed the concept of Art Noveu. Only such genius can comprehend the immense and diverse designs. Truly, all of these are inspirations, motivations, and encouragements to me as I nourish through this path full of excitement, obstacles, and hardships. Lastly, I would want to thank the College of Architecture, the faculty and staff, the travel agencies, Arquitectura Reversible, my family and friends and ultimately God to allow me have this chance to visit and learn through this extraordinary experience.

1. The reason why I conceptualized on the courtyard in front of the Sagrada Familia is mainly because of the vision that Gaudi had for the totality of the plan. In relation with the surroundings, the courtyard will allow communal accessibility and give a better view of the Sagrada Familia. With this in mind, the society will benefit more and at the same time bring the church to co-exist with the structures around. 2. Among the structures in Parc Guell, the most appealing to me was the small house situated at the front of the lot. The organic design of the building blended with the whole park wherein the curves, the tower, the mosaic, and the architectural solutions used captured the essence of Gaudi´s personal style which later culminated in the creation of the Sagrada Familia. 3. The reason why I chose the church located in Ciutat Vella is because of an issue that has come to my attention. For such a beautiful structure that blends with the society, it has almost been totally demolished until the Bio Bui(l)t interceded with the process. That act further made me appreciate the importance of the historical structure that the society has embraced, as well as how the design compliments the flats around ant the CCCB.

57

BARCELONA: BUILDING, CITY AND LANDSCAPE SCALE WORKSHOP_JULY 13-17 2015

COLUMNS AS REFERENCE OF DIMENSION OF SPACES The columns of the Sala Hispotila of Parc Guell was based on the Classical Greek Columns where in inclined columns are not only for proportion but also is the basis of the structure´s limits. Thus giving you the idea of the dimension of the space. I was not only amazed about how it is aesthetically and structurally beautiful but was also inspired on how Gaudi really thought of how functional it will be at most.

REPETITIONS MODIFYING URBAN SETTING The Media Tech Building in 22@ as well as the Torre Agbar is a symbolism of how repetitiveness was evident in modern architecture. Repetition sets the modification of the urban setting. I was also inspired by how the market of Santa Caterina was so urban and modern giving the fact that it is a market. I was not used to seeing those kinds of modern designed markets, thus inspiring me to bring this idea to the Philippines.

ECO-ARCHITECTURE ECODIY gave me the inspiration of not only using organic building materials but also developing it as well. As what, I have learned there are natural and organic materials that are so much stronger than those to what we are used to have as a resource.

GRID From the city plan to a detail of a ceiling, grid was very evident. It gave me the thought of using it as a foundation of planning which in reality was true.

DAY 1 Functionality with Density As I saw the Parc Guell and heard its function, which is an open space or assembly for gatherings, I noticed the density of the structure and how the pillars compliment the density of the structure to provide big spaces. DAY 2 Reflections from Lot to Skyline When we visited this building with a partly tilted faรงade, I was able to view the buildings outside through the reflections on the mirror faรงade. Following that we witnessed this oddly shaped ceiling of a market that reflected the activities being held within the lot. DAY 3 Biomimickry Upon seeing the interior of the Sagrada Familia of Antoni Gaudi. I was moved by the odd design. Understanding that the Gaudi wanted to make his design organic, I realized how it resembles that of a forest with pillars for trees and the ceiling has shapes that remind you of leaves. DAY 4 Low Cost Effectiveness When visiting the Txema, I looked above to see the roof made of what we call Rattan and bamboo which are natural materials. These materials are some of many cost saving materials that also provide a healthier environment.

God´s Architect Antoni Gaudi often incorporated naturalistic and organic elements in his designs. This is probably why he is often labeled as God´s Architect – because he created a representation of God´s own work in dedicated to Him, for God id the greatest of all architects. Casa Batllo is a prime example of this, with abundant natural forms, with ceilings that may represent the ripples of water to the femininity of a woman´s breasts. It is these naturalistic elements that give a unique look toward the design compared to the conforming nature of most modern buildings we see today. This is why I think more people should design the way Gaudi did.

BARCELONA AVENUES The complementary of this drawing is actually a time lapse video that I have compressed into a compilation of pictures. The avenues around the city of Barcelona show how much importance is given to public spaces. This is actually a very vital thing for cities as it shows that public transport and walking are being promoted. This is a health benefit for both the citizens and the whole country because it lessens carbon emissions from vehicles and gives citizens the opportunity to exercise through walking. BASEMENT SPACES Basement levels are used for different activities, and this actually promotes interaction between people from all over the city. Basements can also be a pathway to a parallel street or other public space. This is a very nice concept for cities as it shows how everything is and can be connected. The complement picture of this drawing is best seen in the Museu del Disseny de Barcelona. The museum connects both a parallel street and a public space together. GAUDI The works of Gaudi is an inspiration to all. Not many architects can be distinguished the way Gaudi is just by looking at this work. The details on Casa Batllo´s windows show how much Gaudi uses curves. The complimentary of this drawing are his other works that uses unique curvature as well. The most evident one is Casa Mila.

Day 1 Parc Guell The grand and colorful design of Antoni Gaudi´s Parc Guell left me in awe. It interested me to sketch this part of Parc Guell because it made me feel like I was in a story book where it´s full of imagination, creativity and history. The trancuilice (mosaic) of Gaudi really caught my attention because of its exquisite detail and recycledness. It was an innovate and creative idea. The cave like structure in Parc Guell also caught my attention because of its inclined column structures which made it very unique and historic. Day 2 Palau Guell In Antoni Gaudi´s Palau Guell, its grandness and fanciness really fascinated me. The dome letting in skylight, the part that I really like about it, really had an enlightening effect which brightened up the heavy gothic interior of the palace. Day 3 MACBA MUSEUM This irregular form of the structure made it very modernistic, which I like. I found the geometric shape that they used very fitting for a contemporary museum. I first thought that this museum looked like a cinnamon bun because of its rotating layers around the cylindrical structure. ESTEL FEROT This is the structure, it explained how very rich and cultured the country of Spain is. I found all the sculptures around random places in Spain very contemporary and creative. I found it really really beautiful and fine because it shows how Barcelona is creative in every way. Day 4, ECO COCON, TXEMA This Eco Cocon is the first ECO friendly structure that I´ve seen in production. It convinced me that an ECO building can be resilient at the same time, good for the environment and still very creative. I found that it is very much feasible to use local and cheap materials to construct a successful structure. This green building taught me lots of things that I can use as future references in my ventures as an architecture student.

Connecting Lives… It is amazing how they maximized minus 1 levels/basements as an accessible way to bridge pedestrian walkways, railways, major roads and provide convenience to people. Centre de Cultura Contemporaria de Barcelona (CCCB) Centre de Cultura Contemporaria de Barcelona provides an innovative design in the façade. The façade is converted with entire glass to achieve a reflection of the old buildings in the area. Also, the inclination of the topmost part provides a reflection of the skyline. CCCB best represents the idea om maximizing minus 1 levels/basements to serve as an passageway leading to the entrance of the building. Complimentary Architecture: El Parc – The idea of using minus 1 levels/basements is also relevant with this building. It is remarkable how they connect their buildings to public places, railways, and roads in a seamless manner. Everything blends in.

DDHUB The DDHUB Museu del Dissney de Barcelona is an architectural spectacle I will never forget for proving to definitely having a unique and bold form without compromising its main functionality as a building. Located next to Torre Agbar, it still proves to have its own identity through the use of a grass roof, zinc plates, glass, glazed walls and most especially its bulky volume. Sitting on the edge of Plaรงa de les Glories, its main form is planned based on the contour of lands of the area. It perfectly houses exhibition halls, galleries, a public library and similar facilities. Its interior is very spacious and airy; and very flexible to different installations while its green roof is cantilevered over a lake to create a bold impression which lets itself communicate to the environment onwards. These elements inculcated to the design certainly proves to pursue architectural excellence in terms of aesthetics, functionality, strength and sustainability.

Biomimicky Biomimicky is so rare these days, mainly because of the difficulty and expensiveness of the design. I idolized the confidence and the braveness of Gaudi to pursue his concept, and disregarding the options of people on his ideas. It is also amazing how he uses the opinions of people on his ideas. It is also amazing how he uses the nature to evolve his design, like in this photo, he use a bland building material and used the sunlight and stain glasses to make the interior alive with beautiful colors as we see in nature itself.

Day 1 Both spaces illustrate the importance of structural concept as well as the aesthetic function of linear and inclined columns. Function&form Day 2 From the section and faรงade of Palau Guell, it is evident that illumination and ventilation is important. This concept is also seen in the city grid of Barcelona where courtyards are seen inside each grid space. Day 3 Minimum symmetry can be seen from the Mercat de Santa Caterina but both structures, Palau Guell and Mercat, play with the use of the curvilinear grid. This may also symbolize the flow of development from the market to the city to the people of Barcelona which represents progress.

Day 1 Parc Guell The curved terraces surrounding the public square shows continuity and also doubles as seats or terraces for the people. This element that Gaudi implemented does not only serve for its function as a bench or balcony but it also serves to connect the entire site together. The way that it intentionally compliments the two houses located underneath it shows how Gaudi strategically planned for all elements to be continuous to each other even if there is a difference in leveling. Day 2 Palau Guell Based on Parc Guell & Palau Guell, Gaudi´s style reflects more on organic style combining classical colors and colorful touches. Gaudi prefers to implement style with practicality and this concept shows with the chimneys. Since the structure was a big project, several fireplaces were implemented into the design and instead of placing normal chimneys, Gaudi decided to implement his style here. The structure prefers to stand to provide striking sculptural interest. Day 3 Sagrada Familia Although not a direct work of Gaudi, Josep Subirach still got his inspiration from the techniques of Gaudi. This side or the passion side of the Sagrada Familia shows continuity not just from the Nativity side or the style of Gaudi, but shows continuity from past to present time. This represents how the Sagrada Familia stands, it is something that shows classic Gaudi style from the past that resides in an urbanized modern city.

Casa Batllo and Palau Güell Both are work of Antoni Gaudi yet each contradicts in terms of façade. It was difficult to find a straight edge in Casa Batllo´s façade which contains mostly curved or organic forms and shapes while in Palau Guell geometric or linear elements were incorporated. This notion of Gaudi made me realize that in architecture there is not always a significant signature design wherein one Can be known of. Architects must not design selfishly or just draw what they wanted without consulting factors affecting their project. Applying a certain philosophical design in your work is not bad, as long as it is functional, economical and visually pleasing. Palau Guell´s skylight This portrays the evolution of daylighting from Gaudi´s design of a skylight on Palau Guell and the modernized counterpart on the form of a dormer window which is more simple. In my opinion, Gaudi´s solution on daylighting in terms of complexity is more plausible than our current daylighting solutions. (Modern Building´s customed dormer windows) Two markets; one bloomed, one died, The picture shows Parc Guell´s famous inclined columns which holds what supposed to be a market. Slanted columns were said to represent the Greek´s way of intervening visual errors in terms of perspective. The picture on the right displays the column and truss detail of Santa Caterina, a market near Barcelona Cathedral. Parc Guell is supposed to cater wealthy or well-off families while Santa Caterina successful and not only Parc Guell´s supposed to be market but all of Parc Guell doomed. Nobody bought a land in the park for it was way out of the city center but then that was the main idea behind the project: a big escape from the city´s noise. These two have many similarities, first purpose, both are designed to be markets. Second, both have a distinct structural design which grabs attention of onlookers. Third, both are supposed to be located where there are potential buyers. One thing crosses my mind when I am reminded that this is a social housing in Spain. “I can live here.” Judging from the exterior, and the plan, I believe these are much better than some middle class houses in the Philippines. We lack quality houses which is proportional to the quality of life. Light well in Palau Guell This was one of the most significant part of the Palau. I was fascinated by the fact that a certain space in the palace was located underground but then it receives natural daylight. It gives the feeling of security and neutrality. In Txema I learned about the never-ending issue of using green in designing.

PUBLIC SPACES I have learned that public spaces are essential in any great city. From years of living in a city where these places are very scarce and then suddenly being exposed to a city where it is numerous has given me an opportunity to breathe and experience a new way of living.

VISIONARY After years of simply finding Gaudí’s work peculiar, today it is as if I am meeting his craft (again) for the first time. I no longer see him as someone who got lucky with an odd, unfinished, aesthetic but as someone who knew exactly what he was doing. Parc Güell taught me that his shapes --- from well calculated structures. Along Passeig de Gràcia, I realize that beyond his innovative structural systems, his style sits amongst buildings of varying eras anf styles with absoluts refinement. In fact, years after his death, his work can still control the scene.

A void in the old town reminiscing a nearby bomb site. Commercial areas expanding with the coast line. New architects using their own style to continue where an old master left off. Each new addition to the landscape is considerate of these that came before it as it responds to the needs of its time. The renewal of an old market could mean a bright, inviting façade. Upon entry, lines on the curving wiling seem to demand a motion to the rear where – surprise! – the play on shapes has not ended, and one is led to explore the structure beyond. This respect for context allows industries & institutions to help each other succeed. In this way, architecture paves the way for progressing its society. SOLIDUTE SOLIDARITY “There´s always room to grow” – this statement can go two ways. On one hand the city is ripe with progress. On the other, it doesn´t always have to be busy, doesn´t have to be busying. I found this growth in the stillness of delta de Llobregat. Having been raised with a deep regard for ecology, finding myself in this solitude warmed my heart more than the sun did my skin. At the same time, I felt that leaving room for all of this fauna was a way to have the artificial grow in solidarity with nature.

Gaudi´s park Guell is designed in several layers to accommodate the slope of the soil. They are connected by paths such as ramps and stairs. For example, this large central plaça is supported by a series of thick columns. The space below is used as a market, which also leads to another space. Several pathways provide multiple access points within the campus. These paths are used by students and the public alike. The campus is connected to the city through the paths.

Barcelona is a city brewing with life, from its history to the culture and structures that make it what it is today. The six days spent exploring and discovering the city was not enough for me to fully understand it. But, there are some points I´ve learned during my stay. One point being that the architecture and planning of the city gave a lot of consideration to the people; with the grid design and the wide pedestrian lanes. Another point being that its history and the culture that is brought with it are valued. It´s a beautiful mix of life, art, people, and architecture.

Day 1 Symmetry Park Guell draws inspiration from the classic concept of symmetry. This is similar to the Barcelona Cathedral because it also has elements with bilateral symmetry. Symmetrical elements contribute to the structures sense of harmony, beauty and balance. Day 2 Grid Palau Guell´s ceiling embodies a grid design with octagonal pendants. This interests me because it is a concept familiar to Barcelona´s city planning in both macro (octagonal blocks) and micro (sidewalks and buildings facades). Grids allow architecture to be organized and orderly. Day 3 Curves The Santa Caterina market draws inspiration from the works of Antoni Gaudi whose design focused on curvilinear forms. I think everything natural around us is organic in form. Linear lines are created by humans hence. Using curves can help architecture connect with the natural environment.

Sagrada Família -On double twists and lateral crosses. -A work of a genius. “No creation of man should be higher than God’s creation.”

Barcelona Cathedral -On skies and spires. -Being on the rooftop of the cathedral gave me a different view of the Barcelona skyline.

King’s Court -On kings and queens. -A space where the community gathers to celebrate, to weep and to share.

Casa Batlló -On lights and spirals. -Another one of Gaudí’s creations. Makes me wonder how constrction was made when they didn’t have that much construction technology back then.

Park Güell -On columns and cascading lines.-The repetitive posts make an interesting cascading pattern and definitely a good spot for a photoshoot.

The tour around Barcelona was certainly a one of a kind experience. It certainly made me realize that I am right where I want to be, a budding architect with a whole lot of things ahead of me. I learned a whole lot of things, from Urban Planning to Sustainability to Building Technology and back to the History of Architecture. Gaudi’s works have taught me to plan properly and to really consider each and every space, it’s effectiveness and it’s relativity. I think every thing you put in a structure should always have a meaning and should always be well thought of. Sadly, many of the architects today just treat ‘Architecture’ as a business and not as something that you are passionate about or as an instrument to make people’s lives better. Call me idealistic or old-fashioned but I still believe Architecture can make this world a better place to live in. We use nature as raw material or resources and it’s always nice to give back to the world. I appreciated the visit to the Eco DIY workshop and the Txema construction site. It shows us how a community really works together and extends each other’s hand for the goodness of everyone. This time around, every architect has to think smart how one will use every resource available. As we said, we don’t want sick buildings, nor do we want to kill nature or anyone using the structures we build. We always have to think ahead and I think Gaudi is one of the perfect examples of how one should design. His designs are classic, effective, aesthetically pleasing and completely functional. It’s amazing how architecture is also used to tell stories and is used to send a message. The Sagrada Familia is an elaborate example of this. The way Gaudi expressed the story of Christ in one structure is an a genius act and something to treat as a goal. All in all, the six days in Barcelona has been amazing, and definitely one for the books.
