VISUAL ORDER JANIE MARINO

CONTENT figure/ground similarity proximity closure continuance translation rotation reflection glide/reflection dilation symmetric balance asymmetric balance ambiguous balance neutral balance

FIGURE/GROUND a type of perceptual grouping which is allows us to seperate figures/objects from their background

SIMILARITY figures with similar characteristics which we see as belonging together

PROXIMITY similar figures, located close to eachother, are seen as a group the visual attraction of masses

CLOSURE a tendency to close or complete incomplete figures or groups

CONTINUANCE a group of figures arranged to imply a direction and to continue

TRANSLATION movement of a body from one point of space to another without any rotation, reflection, or change in size

ROTATION the action of rotating a body around an axis or center

REFLECTION a symmetry operation that rotates the mapping of a figure out of the plane 180Ëš

GLIDE/REFLECTION a symmetry operation that rotates the mapping of a figure out of the plane 180Ëš then glides the figure into a new position along a predetermined axis of reflection

DILATION the act of scaling - larger or smaller

SYMMETRICAL BALANCE a group of figures arranged to imply a direction and to continue

ASSYMETRICAL BALANCE a group of figures arranged to imply a direction and to continue

AMBIGUOUS BALANCE a group of figures arranged to imply a direction and to continue

NEUTRAL BALANCE a group of figures arranged to imply a direction and to continue
