Principal’s Report Dear Parents/Caregivers of Faulconbridge Public School Welcome back to Term 2! The weather made it a little difficult for students to stay outside and meet with their friends to ‘Catch up‘ from the holidays. It was a wet start! We have a full term of learning planned with lots of different experiences for our children. Each term brings new challenges and experiences with it. Staff Changes Mrs Dalkeith has decided to take leave for the rest of the year. Ms Samantha Kidd will replace her for the rest of 2015. We are fortunate to have Ms Kidd again as a full time teacher on class. At this stage, Mr McDonald will remain on 6M and Ms Attard will continue on S1E. Within the next 2 weeks, I will be in a much better position to finalise class teachers for the duration of 2015. All full time teachers employed as part of a teachers’ wage conditions, are entitled to long service leave and other leave the department allows or that a staff member requires. The school tries as much as possible to cause the least amount of disruption to students learning. Your understanding in this matter is appreciated. Mrs Lean has extended her leave and she is due to return on the 18th May, 2015. Band Mr Earl and his ‘Orchestra’, are well and truly coming together to form an amazing school ensemble. I went down there to listen to the band and felt excited that they had come so far in such a short amount of time. It was evident after listening to the ensemble, that the students have been practising playing their instruments and I saw a joy on their faces as they followed Mr Earl’s lead. We look forward to future performances. Thank you band members and of course, Mr Earl. Camp It was good to see the return of our senior students arriving back from camp on the last day of school. I trust they all had a good night’s sleep on the Thursday night, after their return. Grounds Maintenance On Saturday 16th May, we will hold our first ground’s maintenance for 2015. Anyone who can spare a couple of hours to help tidy up the school grounds would be much appreciated. Please meet in the school grounds at 9.00am. Working Mathematically Ms Elise Attard (S1E teacher) presented a module to staff on working mathematically in class using the new curriculum. We all had fun engaging in the activities that we will use in classroom. On Monday 27 th April, Miss Attard’s mother Dr Attard, will be presenting to staff at our weekly staff meeting, a closer look at the mathematics curriculum and how we can further engage our students in their learning. P & C Meeting this week It was good to meet with the P&C so early in term 2. There was much discussion and planning. The P & C meetings are a place to meet and discuss as a group, matters concerning our students and the school. I appreciate being invited to this important part of Faulconbridge Public School. I hope to see more faces next meeting. ANZAC DAY On Friday, 24th April, our school will be holding an ANZAC DAY memorial service. The service will be held in the hall at 11.40am. Parents/Caregivers are invited to attend. The service will be for approximately 20 minutes. This year marks the 100 th anniversary. A special guest will be talking to the students at this assembly. Thank you to the Prefects and Captains and to Mr McDonald for organising this important event.

Disco in Term 1 Congratulations students of Faulconbridge Public School. It was the best Disco ever held at this school. Nearly all students attended and had a lot of fun. Thank you to Mrs Curzon and Mr Earl for their organisation. Little Top The P & C have worked very hard to replace the small top covering. It was damaged and has been replaced by insurance. The new little top is also waterproof. With the amount of recent rain lately, nothing could keep any areas of the playground dry.

Anzac Day March 2015 On Saturday 25th April 2015, Anzac Day, we have been invited to take part in the Springwood ANZAC Day Parade and commemoration service. The parade will assemble at the Springwood Fire Station at 9:45am and the parade will proceed along Macquarie road to the Memorial in Buckland Park. The service will commence at 11:00am with wreath laying. Any students who wish to take part in this special occasion can meet Mrs Curzon outside the fire station. Faulconbridge Public School takes pride in marching on this day. As this ceremony is a formal event, it is a request that all students who attend, wear full school uniform.

Mr Earl’s Report First Phase Football Workshops Thank you to the parents that expressed interest in the First Phase Football workshops. We are very excited to offer our students the opportunity to receive professional soccer coaching from experienced and highly recommended coaches. With so many interested students, the coaches at First Phase Football have decided to split the students up into two ability based groups. They will look at everyone next Friday (1st May, 7.55am) before splitting the boys and girls into one of the two groups. Starting in week three, Group A will train on Tuesdays from 7.55am and Group B will practice at the same time every Friday.

Stage 3 Drama day at Springwood High School On Wednesday 6th May Stage 3 students will be walking to Springwood High School to develop a piece of theatre that will be incorporated into a Springwood HS production at the end of Term 2. Students from Springwood, Lawson and Hazelbrook Public Schools will also attend the day and be part of the drama production. By the end of the workshop day our students will have a fairly complete performance item that will be rehearsed and refined over this term. Paul Thomson

Stage One Update Welcome back to school! I hope you had a restful holiday and are ready for a busy term ahead. It is exciting to announce Kindegarten students will begin homework this term. Parents, please send in a labelled A4 plastic folder or envelope to your child's teacher. Remember to check your child's bag for their readers and sight words from next week. I am sure you'll be amazed at how well your child is doing! I will be a proud reprsentative of Faulconbridge Publuc School at the ANZAC Day march in Springwood on Saturday. I invite all K-2 students to join me on Saturday so we can march together. Don't forget to wear your school uniform! Kristy Jansons

LIBRARY NEWS PREMIER’S READING CHALLENGE 2015 Our school participates each year in this reading challenge which aims to encourage an enjoyment and love of reading. Already some very keen students have completed reading and entering their books online. All K-2 students will complete the challenge (experience 30 books) with the combined efforts of classroom teachers and the teacher librarian. 3-4 and 5-6 students are required to read 20 books, record titles and PRC ID#s in their Reading Logs and enter them online. Last year we filled three glass windows with stars for each successful student (almost 300!). This year students will decorate a paper “light bulb” which fits in with this year’s Book Week theme: “Books Light Up Our Lives.” The challenge finishes at the end of August each year when all entries must be online, checked and validated by me. Certificates are received by students at the end of the year.

BOOK FAIR: “ENTER THE KINGDOM OF BOOKS” - MAY 14-28 Parents, grandparents, carers and guardians are invited to attend our first Book Fair which will arrive on Thursday, May 14 and continue until May 28. There is always a great selection of books for parents and students to choose from in an effort to build those important personal “libraries” at home. Students will arrive home with a “Wish List” of titles and prices which indicates their interests on their initial visit to the fair. It is not meant to be a list that pressures parents into buying something. Students are told it is up to their parents and should accept a “no” without fuss. They are also encouraged to suggest books for the library that we can choose from any commission earned. Payment accepted can be cash, credit card, eftpos or cheque (made out to Faulconbridge Public School). Online payment can also be made to Scholastic. Orders can also be sent to the library in clearly marked envelopes. Free book marks will be given out with each purchase and a raffle ticket filled out for each student. Before the end of the fair, 6 tickets will be drawn with each lucky student being able to spend $10 at the fair. If our sales total over $4,500 a full set of the Children’s Book Council shortlisted books for 2015 will also be awarded to the school. More details of times etc. will follow in later newsletters. THANK YOU to all parents who have covered so many new books for the library and the school’s Reading Resources. Our library could not operate without your wonderful support and that of our great band of Library Monitors! Diane McKay Teacher Librarian
