November Month of the Dead

With great devotion Maltese people observe the 1st and 2nd of November as spiritual holidays. On t of November, All Saints Day ("Jum il-Qaddisin kollha"), Christians joyfully proclaim in concert of th glory of all saints known and unknown.

The 2nd of November is known as All Souls' Day ("Jum l'Erwieħ - L-Għid tal-Imwiet"), whereby peo commemorate the faithful departed who at death have not fully atoned for mortal sins and cannot y attain the beatific vision in heaven.

November is also known as the month of the dead (ix-xahar tal-mejtin), or the month of the souls (i xahar tal-erwieħ). The church bells toll sadly (il-qniepen iħabbru), for the worshipers to attend for t sacrifice of mass and pray for the suffrage of the deceased community members (rifuġju tal-midinbi Cemetery gates are left open all day, so that people visit their loved ones and decorate graves with bouquets of flowers, candles and photos to remember their departed loved ones. To commemorate t month, local confectionist bake sweet pastry in the shape of a bone (l-għadam tal-mejtin), and deco with white icing on top.
