Le Bateau Ivre features mixed media works on panel. Using anything but a brush, Jansen applies the mixture of oil, mineral spirits, and resin. Through 30-40 layers, Jansen creates a glass like surface with depths of colour and brightness. Titled after a verse-poem by Arthur Rimbaud about a sinking ship drifting at sea and is known for its vivid imagery and symbolism, which is mirrored in the vibrant and contrasting colours used by Jansen. Furthermore, it is a surreal poem written from the perspective of the ship itself, wherein it describes its many transcendent sensory experiences. The artists’ pieces exuded a joie de vivre through the vibrancy and emotion expressed in the marks and gestures. While listening to 80s pop music (which often inspire the titles of his artworks), the artist attacks the canvas from all angle; He moves around the canvas which he has placed flat on the floor, and even climbing ladders to achieve the desired effects of chance which permeate through his work. The artist lives and works in Dusseldorf, Germany.

Jürgen Jansen What constitutes the character of Jürgen Jansen’s painting process can be seen in his treating image and color that wonderfully combine chance and calculation, planning and improvisation, consideration and contingency. Jansen pours, drops and sprays his paints, turning their chance constellations into the starting point for structures and ornaments. Since the paint dries very slowly, Jansen easily wipes it off, removes it or mixes them with other colors, creating new forms. The underlying levels shimmer through the luminous and transparent skin of paint. His decision to concentrate on laboriously drying oils and brilliant lacquers and making regular use of wood or sheets of aluminium as his supports— materials that do not absorb paint as easily as canvas—in addition to largely avoiding brushes in favor of rags, brooms and palette knives is directly related to his pictorial approach. The highly reflective texture of his pictures, which represents one of its typical features, is just as desired as their often glaze-like painterly quality which is a consequence of the highly diluted oil that Jansen uses like watercolours. Jansen was born in 1960, Rheydt, Germany. He currently and works in Düsseldorf, Germany.
