RICHARD SERRA GALLERY
Jan Lavtar I PORTFOLIO
Situated in the historical centre of Ljubljana, the location given is a grass courtyard of a nineteenth century palace facing Ljubljanica river. In order to avoid covering the view to and from the palace facade, the part of gallery facing palace is moved below ground floor. The atrium lets the light in. The rest of the gallery is squeezed to the narrow streep of the parcel, forming a small alley at the entrance.

The walkway through gallery is the main motive for the shape of the building. Atrium is positioned as one of the blocks in the composition. Starting on the ground floor, one descends into the basment, where the bigger statues are exhibited.

The house was originally designed for the Design studio class in my first year of studies. It is based of a modular blocks of rooms. for the given project, I had to design a real construction to support the overhanging elements of the building. The structure is a timber framed, skeletal construction that is used in the majority of prefabricated housing.

The special feature of this design is the scaled foundation that is supportin the basement walls. To avoid the part of gound level that has no basement beneath from sinking into a soft marshy terrain of Ljubljana’s southern part, one needs to bridge the lower and upper part of the foundation with a special shaped steps, much like building a house on a steep escarpment.

Youth centre provides space for multiple programs combined under the same roof. From a contemporary mediatheque and space for both individual and collective work, to a bigger interior and exterior auditorium. The two separate building cubes are connected by a single line of steps, that form a reading area in the library building, continues into the auditorim in the atrium and bridges over to the lecture room in the second building. The layout of the two blocks forms an open space used by the adjacent restaurant as a terrace.

For this assignment, we had to design a structurally efficiend structure that was evaluated by the total mass of construction steel invested in the project. The integrity of the proposed rest area building, that bridges over a main A2 highway line in Slovenia, has been designed in a SAP 2000 structural analysis software. The shape of the building is based on two arches that span over the highway without the need of supports in the middle.

For the summer internship, I had a chance to work at one of the best architectural visualisations studios in the country. While most of the work consisted of preparing visualisations for the projects of a major slovenian design offices that outsource the visualisation, I did get the opportunity to design a real house for a client. The house Globoče is designed in a rural slovenian landscape replacing an old barn with a modern structure.

The project's location takes place in an idyllic village of Saint-Christophe en Brionnais in the French region of Burgundy. The object of renovation is a former school that is currently being used by the institute C.E.P. that deals with preservation of Romanic cultural heritage of the region. The whole rearrangement of the building and its park is centered around an imaginary axis that links the object with a nearby roundabout and its statue in the middle. It is a starting and orientational point for all the new pathways.

An empty plot of land in the proximity of Ljubljana train station is a perfect spot for a think - tank hub. A mix use office building that would give the young prodigies space to grow, learn, create, meet and share ideas. A series of blocks is connected along a central corridor line in a zig - zag fashion that correspond to the existing buildings on site, forming a playful series of atriums and small squares. Placing a supermarket on the bank of the Ljubljanica river was a difficult task. Special attention was given to the landscaping of the building on the side of the riverbank. The building features a tourist information centre for the starting point to the PST hiking path around the city of Ljubljana, a local supermarket with parking garage above it and a restaurant with a terrace. The shape of the building isresponding to the shape of the location plot and the pattern of the surrounding residential housing.

The project is about adapting a smaller building (garage) into a tourist guest house, that is owned by a couple who run their own tourist agency. The building is transformed into a living space, consisting two rooms with bathrooms in the ground floor and one apartment for four at the top.
To help the renovated building fit into the rural suburbs of Bled better, the east and west facade feature a wooden mesh where a vine could grow as traditionally seen on many old barns and farms in this area. The roof angle has been altered to follow the traditional shape.

In addition to the estetics of the house, the altered shape and angle of the roof adds additional space to fit an appartment on the attic. In a project where every square meter of usable space counts, the sharp roof angle lets us squeeze in an additional double bed on top of the beams. Shortening the evaes of the roof makes the apartment house fit better on the plot.

1 assignment - DIGITAL ARTWORK to draw inspiratin for a project
The design studio workflow was based on series of exercises discussing veawing patterns and tissues in architecture. Starting with creating a reference artwork, we have proceeded to reference the initial design in various shapes, objects and buildings. We have been learning advanced parametric and 3d modelling tools in the process to achieve the final result.

The layout is designed in blocks that can be multiplyed seamlessly without being repetitive. The goal was to design as much pedestrian and green areas as possible with all the cars being stopped and parked on a curb next to the entrance to the block. Thus, the entire neighbourhood is a car free zone.

Overall comfort is one of the key factors when it comes to planning any type, form and scale of building. It is necessary for a hose to perform well when used by inhabitants. Living conditions inside the house and in a neighbourhood have a huge impact on both physical and psychological wellbeing of its users. We designed the project concerning high standards of the multi-comfort principles.

PIRAMYD CHAIR The pyramide chair is based on a design proposal for a plywood self assembly furniture. The goal is to machine cut the plywood plates using CNC robots, then shipping them to customers as a single sheet of plywood that would save space to the delivery services. The plywood is then self assembled by the purchasing customer. I have tested the design on a pilot level.

Given the harsh northern climate of Brest, Belarus where the competition took place, it was important for us to show how the proposed neighbourhood looked like as seasons change. The houses are designed with thermal efficiency of the isover standard. All the buildings would be centrally heated by a remote heating plant, as is common for a large scale developments.

Architecture is an invaluable expertise, as broad as any. Architects are a key decision - making and trouble solving figures in the process of designing, constructing and sustaining all the built world that our civilisation creates. As such, we do our best to navigate the stormy waters created by the clashing interests of stakeholders involved, working towards meeting the needs of all without disregarding our own ethics. We need to meet the needs of others by coming up with a visionary solutions, and not capitulate our ethics to the dullness of a bitter compromise. As an architect, I enjoy to be part of this creative, intriguing field we work in. I am inspired by art, society and people that surround me, I learn from the craftsmenship that I admire, I try to foresee the needs of people we design buildings for, and I do my best to respect the heritage of the space that our creations affect. I also hope to utilize the cutting edge green technologies in my work, to do my share for a sustainable future. Thank you for taking time to see my work,
