A co-op is defined as a two-term work experience with the same employer, and an internship is defined as a single term work experience. These positions can be compensated or volunteer, full-time or part-time, and with local, regional, national, or international employers. Our Cooperative Education and Internship Program supports the BGSU Vision of aspiring to be a premier learning community by providing access to quality work assignments fostering the following student learning outcomes: » To gain practical experience while applying classroom learning at the workplace; » To experience personal and professional growth. » During the academic year, 381 student co-op or internship experiences were recorded. » The average hourly wage across all majors and geographic regions was $17.13, ranging from $7.25 to $27.00. » Students completed internships/co-ops in 21 states and Washington, D.C. The largest concentration of work assignments was in Ohio, in more than 56 cities across the state. Four students engaged in internship assignments outside of the United States. » More than 184 employers in 58 different industries hired BGSU co-op and intern students, and these students were enrolled in more than 48 academic majors.

Cooperative Education and Internship Program National Association of Colleges and Employers’ 2011 Internship and Co-op Survey Summary Experiential education plays a key role in the overall college recruiting process as demonstrated by the following highlights from the survey. » The top two most effective recruiting activities for interns and co-op students are “high touch”: on-campus recruiting and career fairs. » Employers reported converting 57.7% of interns and 55.5% of co-op students into full-time employees. » Hires from intern/co-op programs had higher retention rates as compared to hires without internship/co-op experience. » After the first year on the job, 75.8% of hires from the company’s internship/co-op program were retained in comparison to the 60.7% of hires without internship/ co-op experience. » After five years on the job, 55.1% of hires from the company’s internship/co-op program were retained in comparison to the 44.0% of hires without internship/ co-op experience.
