A Great Place To Recruit

BGSU Celebrates 31st Annual Summer Job Fair On March 1, BGSU students had the opportunity to meet with more than 92 recruiters from 46 organizations who were recruiting for part-time, seasonal, internships and full time positions. We appreciate our loyal Summer Job Fair employers and were pleased to welcome six new organizations this year, including Hearthside Foods, Inc., Shining Star Residential Services, LLC, Stepping Stones,

Sunshine, Urban Radio Broadcasting, LLC and Westfield Franklin Park. BGSU’s Summer Job Fair offers employers an opportunity to identify and recruit talented students. Mark your calendar for Wednesday, March 13, 2013, and join us for our annual Summer Job Fair. Details and on-line registration forms will be available in January 2013.

Helping Students, Serving Employers Finding a qualified college student to meet your hiring needs can be challenging – they may not have a significant work history, they lack experience, and for many students, a part-time or seasonal job is “just a paycheck.” However, if you are seeking students with a specific skill set, we can work together to increase the chances that you hire a candidate who can make a significant contribution to your organization. Here are some suggestions.

DON’T FORGET to complete the enclosed JLD Data Collection Form and return it by July 31, 2012. Your information is critical to ensuring continued JLD Services! THANK YOU!

1. Create an engaging job description – one that sounds interesting and provides suggestions as to what types of skills students can develop as the result of their work with you. Help students envision how they can benefit (beyond a paycheck) from their experience with your organization. 2. Take full advantage of our services for employers. Nearly all of our services are free! Post your positions with us, and we’ll make them available on WorkNet – our online job database for students who are seeking part-time and seasonal jobs. Students can access WorkNet 24/7 from their computers, smart phones, and tablets! WorkNet allows students to set their accounts so that they are notified any time we post a job that meets their personalized search criteria. 3. Are you looking for a skill set that is associated with a particular major or career field? We can use WorkNet to help you identify majors and academic programs that are a good match for your position. In addition to posting your job vacancies, we

promote your opportunities to students by working with our contacts in academic departments. BGSU offers more than 200 majors and programs; some are a direct “fit” for certain types of jobs; nursing, accounting, education, etc. Many programs require students to complete coursework and gain knowledge that can be an asset to your organization. Recreation, Tourism, Event Planning, Human Development and Family Studies, Sport Management, Supply Chain Management, Apparel Merchandising and Product Development, Gerontology, and many majors in BGSU’s College of Education and Human Development are a good fit for a variety of summer and part-time positions. Our partnership is an important part of our goal to help our students get the experience they need to be successful graduates in a challenging and dynamic workforce. In turn, we pledge to provide exemplary service to help you staff your organization with talented BGSU students.

Outstanding Student Employees Recognized

Outstanding Student Employee Working for an External Employer - Henry Thorpe, WCESC-Community Learning Centers with Krista Jackson (nominator).

Student Employment Services formally recognized the contributions of BGSU students who work on April 11, 2012 at the 11th annual Student Employee Appreciation & Scholarship Reception. Nominations were accepted on behalf of outstanding student employees in four categories: Working for an External Employer, Working for BGSU, Co-op or Intern, and BGSU Team. Henry Thorpe, from the Wood County Educational Service Center, was the recipient of the Outstanding Student Employee award nominated by an external employer. Krista Jackson, his nominator, submitted the following: “Henry is an invaluable BGSU student, he is a Team Leader at the Community Learning Centers of Woodmore (a before and after school enrichment program). Henry is extremely reliable and accepts every opportunity to work and is always ready to engage and play with the kids at STARS. Henry helps lead challenge centers, engages the children in athletic activities, and steps up to do all of the more mundane work cleaning up as well. Henry is an extremely bright student himself and has a knack for explaining homework to the children who need help. He has been such a consistent support for the Woodmore team that he knows the ins and outs of my job as well, and when I am out and need him to sub in my absence, I rest assured that everything is going smoothly. Henry has developed great relations with the parents of the STARS students as well. He is a superb role model for these children. When parents were unable

to commit enough time to coach the Destination Imagination team, Henry heard the disappointment about the situation and stepped up and offered to coach. This requires huge amounts of time and dedication and is purely a volunteer act on his behalf, and has been an awesome opportunity for these children who would have otherwise not gotten to participate in this wonderful team building, problem solving program. Henry has given a lot of himself to the Woodmore STARS students and parents. I truly appreciate him as a staff member”.

In recognition of his outstanding work, Henry received a $500 scholarship, and an engraved plaque to commemorate his award. We are especially grateful to have a relationship with employers who appreciate the work of our student employees and join with us in celebrating their successes. Please mark your calendar for next year’s event which will be held Tuesday, April 9, 2013. Nomination forms will be available on-line in February. We encourage you to nominate your outstanding BGSU student employees.

From the Desk of Peg Bucksky Thank you for recruiting at BGSU!

Summer 2012 Session

During 2011-2012, more than 300 organizations submitted job postings which created more than 700 part time/seasonal off campus job opportunities for BGSU students. To help ensure the continuation of the JLD Program and its services, please take a few minutes to complete the enclosed letter and report the number of BGSU students your organization hired and their estimated earnings. As a token of appreciation, the first one hundred organizations that respond to this request will receive a small gift.

June 11 – August 3, 2012 8-week term

We are excited about our new website, which will be located at bgsu.edu/stuemp by mid-July. Until completed, you can use the job posting form on the Career Center website at hire.bgsu.edu to post your part time/seasonal job opportunities. BGSU continues to grow and change. During 2011-2012, Dr. Mary Ellen Mazey was appointed as our 11th president. Our two new residence halls and dining facilities were very popular with students and the Wolfe Center for the Arts and Stroh Center opened to rave reviews. We enrolled the 3rd largest fall freshman class, with highest ever number of out-of-state students (600), important to note for our employers in states bordering Ohio. (Please keep in mind that we post jobs for students who return to “home” during the summer and break periods). We also increased our services to students seeking part-time and seasonal jobs. We reviewed more than 1200 resumes of freshmen to help them describe their co-curricular and work experience and add their BGSU majors and career plans. We met with students in 30 and 60 minute consultations to provide job search help and offered individualized WorkNet coaching so students could direct their searches for specific majors and career fields. We will continue to work closely with students as we continue to offer individualized services to employers. Please don’t hesitate to call me to assist you with your part time/seasonal hiring needs. BGSU is a great place to recruit! I look forward to another successful year working with you. Wishing you a safe and enjoyable summer!
