MAKING AN EXCELLENT IMPRESSION: THE ONE-MINUTE COMMERCIAL First impressions are critical to the job search process! Recruiters attending BGSU’s EXPO Job and Internship Fairs stated that they spend between three and five minutes with each student, so be sure to make the most of your time. A one-minute commercial is a great introduction to use when you first meet a potential employer. It is a summary of your talents, accomplishments, skills, and interests. Here is our best advice for developing an effective one-minute commercial for use at EXPO and other career networking events.
STEP 1. REVIEW: A. List 1-2 past jobs, projects, volunteer experiences, student organization accomplishments, or tasks that are related to positions of interest. B. Identify 2-3 skills gained from these related experiences. C. List 2-3 personal qualities that make you a good candidate.
STEP 2. OUTLINE:
REMEMBER TO:
A. Choose the details you want to communicate during your commercial.
• Make eye contact and smile.
B. Use the following scenario as a guide and be conversational – do not simply memorize information.
• Shake hands (use a firm, confident handshake) and state your name.
1. Introduce yourself by your first and last name, major, and class standing.
• Use the person’s name, if known, then begin giving your one-minute commercial.
2. Briefly share your knowledge about the organization, field, or industry and why you are interested.
• Incorporate the company research you completed prior to the job and internship fair.
3. Explain what you can offer by highlighting your relevant experience and skills. 4. Express your interest in learning more about the organization by asking a direct question or requesting an interview.
STEP 3. REHEARSE: A. Practice your one-minute commercial and ask for feedback and suggestions. B. Time yourself to make sure your commercial is not too long. The more you practice, the more confident you will be.
• Listen to what the recruiter says about the company and the questions he/she asks. • Thank the recruiter for her/his time: “I appreciate you taking the time to speak with me; it was great to meet you.” • Be sure to ask: “Do you have a business card?”, and “Do you plan to interview students tomorrow?” The one-minute commercial is just a guide. You may not always be able to deliver it in its entirety.
EXAMPLE OF A ONEMINUTE COMMERCIAL: Consider all the suggestions as you review this example: Hi, my name is Jenna Jobwise and I am a senior majoring in Two Dimensional Studies with a concentration in drawing and painting at Bowling Green State University. I have a minor in Arts Management and am interested in a career in the arts that will allow me to give back to my community. On WorkNet, I saw your Community Programming Arts internship for your organization and wanted to share my experiences with you. For the past three years, I have been involved in working on campus in the bookstore where I developed my skills in working with people and creative problem solving. Over the past year, I have held an internship position at the BGSU Art Galleries that allowed me to better understand the arts management industry and build on my teamwork, communication, event planning, budgeting and public relations skills within a non-profit framework. These skills and experiences are transferrable to the Community Programming Arts internship position. Could you tell me more about the work environment of your organization and your expectations for this position?

FALCONS SOAR! USE THE SOAR MODEL TO ANSWER BEHAVIORAL INTERVIEW QUESTIONS WHAT IS SOAR? The SOAR Model is an informative way to organize your responses and communicate the skills, knowledge, and experience you have to offer an employer. Be sure to relate your examples to the position for which you are interviewing. Employers know that past behavior is considered the best predictor of future behavior. So, recruiters often use behavioral interview questions to learn how you have performed in previous jobs or internships. Employers are intentional about the behavioral interview questions they ask. They align these questions with the responsibilities and duties of the position and the traits needed to be successful. Reviewing position descriptions is a great way to identify potential behavioral interview questions that may be asked and
be prepared to respond to these questions.
POSITION DESCRIPTION: NONPROFIT MANAGEMENT INTERN
USE THE SOAR MODEL TO ANSWER BEHAVIORAL INTERVIEW QUESTIONS.
The Non-Profit Management Intern assists in the coordination of all largescale programs for the organization and reports directly to the Vice President of Programming. The intern will: coordinate outreach activities for all programs; develop and implement program evaluations; recruit volunteers to staff events; promote the programs via social media; and write local newspaper articles and website content. Seeking individuals proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Outlook, etc.).
First describe the SITUATION (S) in which you found yourself; then the OBSTACLE (O), problem, or task you addressed, overcame, or implemented. Next explain the ACTION (A) you took to accomplish it, and finally, the RESULTS (R) you achieved. This Model enables you to keep your answer concise, to organize it logically, and to provide details about how you achieved a successful outcome. Be sure to incorporate all the letters, S-O-A-R, to strengthen your response. Please read the position description, and review the behavioral interview questions that follow.
POSSIBLE BEHAVIORAL INTERVIEW QUESTIONS: • How do you decide what gets top priority when scheduling your time? • Share an example illustrating how you motivate others. What was the outcome? • Organization is a trait that will help you to be successful in this internship. Please give an example that illustrates your ability to organize and manage projects. THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND WHEN PREPARING YOUR ANSWERS: 1. Read the position description carefully and outline the duties and required traits. 2. Research the typical responsibilities of that position on O*Net (http:// www.onetonline.org/). 3. Think of your most successful related accomplishments or experiences (e.g., internship, volunteer work, student organization, class projects, etc.). 4. Include positive examples. Don’t describe a social event or situation that included improper behavior or poor decision making. 5. Remember to stay on topic and be concise, but provide enough details to give your interviewer a picture of how you perform, and link it to the position for which you are applying. For more details about behavioral interviewing questions and how to
@/bgsucareers (#hirefalcons)
answer them, go to hire.bgsu.edu, click on Career Resources on the Student Page, and then the B!G Job Search Guide. Below is a behavioral interview question for the intern position described earlier. QUESTION Tell me about a time when you took initiative. What was the outcome? SAMPLE RESPONSE
S – SITUATION At my previous marketing internship at Frieda’s Boutique, in order for a customer to sign up for our digital mailing list, they had to be in the store and fill out a paper registration form.
O – OBSTACLE Sometimes customers were so focused on making a purchase; they didn’t have time to fill out the card. Some said they would fill it out later, but there was not a customer service sign-up mailing list process in place for on the website.
A – ACTION I took the initiative to research and test some possible solutions. I looked for the most inexpensive way to create a digital database of e-mail addresses. I found a free solution through Google Docs and presented it to my supervisor.
R – RESULT My supervisor loved this idea! We were able to build our digital mailing list from 200 customers to 1,000 in a period of six months. I also suggested that we create a tablet kiosk for customers to sign up for the list when they are in the store instead of using paper cards. This change resulting in a savings of $600 in printing costs per year.

Q:
How did you obtain your internship/co-op? How did you use the Career Center?
A:
I obtained my internship by first meeting with the organization’s representatives at the BGSU Sport Management Alliance Job Fair. I was then invited to Toledo for an on-site interview and was offered the position a few days later. The Career Center helped me in preparing both my resume and interviewing techniques, as I scheduled multiple appointments with the Career Center prior to attending the Job Fair.
Q:
What did you accomplish on your internship/co-op?
A:
Through my internship experience, I gained insight into the field of sport management and added an extremely valuable experience to my resume. I honed my sales skills while also learning enough about the field to determine if it was the right fit for me both personally and professionally. Luckily, this experience served as reassurance for me in my decision to pursue a career in sport management.
Q:
What advice would you give students?
A:
I gained this experience shortly after completing my

freshman year at BGSU, and it has since helped propel me into candidacy for additional internship positions throughout my collegiate career. Because of this, I would recommend that students gain as much experience as they can as early as possible. The earlier students are able to gain these types of experiences, the greater their chances become of landing even more meaningful internship and work experiences prior to graduating.
I met Jeff Jackson, Assistant Vice President/ Director of Career Center early on in the semester to discuss and explore potential employers and internship opportunities that best suited my interests. While attending the Career Center’s Etiquette Dinner, I met Ms. Toni Shoola, Program Manager at the United Way of Greater Toledo. The dinner turned into an impromptu question-andanswer event between Toni and I, which later turned into her extending me an offer as the Assistant Volunteer Coordinator intern!
Q:
What did you accomplish on your internship/co-op?
A:
I am definitely learning a wealth of information about various planning and organizational skills needed to host successful events. One program that that the United Way of Greater Toledo offers is the Free Tax Preparation Program. Through my internship experience, I became certified in Federal Tax Law to assist Toledo residents complete their taxes.

If you have even an ounce of interest in a particular field or subject, utilize every single resource in the Career Center to best help you explore it! It is really easy to think that things like internships and co-ops will just appear whenever, but they really don’t. Go after them, and make them your own.

What makes a candidate stand out?
On a resume, we like to see bullet points that show impact and results, not just the general tasks you went through. We want to know what you did in that position that no other student or candidate could write on their resume. Strong candidates specify what makes them the obvious choice. In an interview, we like to hear specific answers to behavioral based questions. The more vague your answers are, the more you blend in with other candidates. What makes a candidate stand out?
Confidence, Confidence, Confidence. Career fairs are a two way street for both students and employers. One student may see two dozen employers in one day, just like how employers could potentially see a hundred students in one day, not even counting at multiple schools. If a student has confidence, or that ‘wow’ factor, I will remember them. Confidence just isn’t your presence. It is the way you are dressed for the job you WANT. It is the strength in your voice. Q:
What is your best advice to students and graduates in their job search?
A:
Build your network before you need it. If you have an internship lined up for the summer and decide not to go to the job fair, you might be missing out on employers and contacts you could be building for the following summer or after graduation! We have an “ism,” or guiding principle, at Quicken Loans that says “Money and numbers follow, they do not lead.” Find your passion and let that lead you to a job you love, this will result in you making a real impact and not just chasing a paycheck every week. Research as much as you can about a company and make sure it’s the right fit for you. Follow companies on social media to get an inside look
Q:
What is your best advice to students and graduates in their job search?
A:
My best advice would be to be true to yourself in your search. Your first career move postgraduation will be one of the most important decisions of your career. It is IMPERATIVE to make sure that you find a company and position that is a good fit for you. Yes, the pressure is heavy for anyone finding a job after graduation. But there have been so many candidates I have interviewed that weren’t genuinely interested in sales. If you jump the gun and accept the first position that comes you way, it may not be a good fit, and you will not only waste the employers’ time, but your time. Be selective, do your research, and make sure at the end of the day you are happy with your decision. After all, you are working for 75% of your day!

THE ONLINE JOB SEARCH: TWEETING, LINKING, AND CREATING A PERSONAL BRAND THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA Social media is a must for job/ internship searches! Both students and employers are using these effective tools. In the National Association of Colleges and Employers’ (NACE) 2013 Student Survey, 87.3 % of students used Facebook in their job search; 82.9 % used LinkedIn, and 51.4% used Twitter. Additionally, according to a survey from Jobvite in 2013, “78% of recruiters have successfully hired a candidate who was identified or introduced through a social network or social media.” Searching for a job is more than just submitting your resume. Utilizing social media and networking can increase your chances of obtaining an interview leading to your dream job! As you utilize social media and networking in your job search, be sure to create a consistent online brand reputation (i.e., assets or skills associated with your online presence). Be true to your experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities; and showcase appropriate examples. Utilize industry keywords in your profiles, conversations, and posts. Communicate in a professional
manner, even within the Twitter constraints of 140 characters.
TIPS FOR USING SOCIAL MEDIA IN YOUR JOB SEARCH LINKEDIN
LinkedIn is a professional networking site where users can create a profile, connect to others, and present information about their professional careers. LinkedIn offers groups and applications primarily for networking, idea and information sharing, and company research. According to a 2013 Jobvite poll, LinkedIn is the social media network of choice, with 94% of recruiters using this site. Take these steps to make the best use of the LinkedIn professional features: 1. Create your professional profile. Highlight information from your resume to demonstrate your most marketable professional characteristics. If you add a photo, keep it professional. Include information about your key career or work-related accomplishments, experience, or knowledge. Utilize the profile box with brief information that best describe your background and work history.
2. Ask for recommendations from your connections. Providing short 1-3 sentence comments on your skills, abilities, or knowledge can increase your marketability and add to your credibility. Ask for recommendations from your supervisors, colleagues, or clients for a well-rounded view of your experience. 3. Join alumni groups and career- or industry-related groups. Once you identify and join groups, follow and contribute to conversations by communicating original ideas and asking questions. Remember to announce that you are job searching and ask for advice or leads. It is best not to ask for a job. Find BGSU alumni and current students on LinkedIn by visiting http://linkedin.com/alumni. 4. Research companies. Use the search feature to identify and investigate companies of interest. Find employees who are ‘IN’ your network and request to be introduced through a shared 1st connection.
Facebook is primarily a social networking site; however, many employers have Facebook pages as well. Here are some suggestions for appropriate use of Facebook:

If a user wants to reply or talk to another user, the use of the “@” symbol along with the other user’s Twitter username will create a public mention and tweet. A user also can “direct message” another person, which is a private message. Here are some great ways to utilize Twitter in the job search: 1. Follow companies. Look up and follow company Twitter feeds of interest. Recruiters may keep Twitter accounts to share information on campus visits, job & internship fairs, and job postings. Company Twitter feeds also may include recent news and product information. 2. Follow relevant hashtags to your search. Some examples of job hashtags include: #tweetmyjobs, #jobsearch, #findjobs, #careers, #jobs. You also can search by specific types of jobs, for example #sportsjobs, #salesjobs, etc. 3. Participate in #____chat. Look for and follow industryrelated #hashtag conversations. Similar to LinkedIn, contribute to the conversations, advertise your job search, and ask for advice. These are just a few tips about using social media in your job search. Google “social media job search” or another key word combination for more tips and information, blogs, and articles. Finally, Google yourself to see what comes up. Is it all positive? REFERENCES: Jobvite (2014). EXPO GUIDE
SPRING 2015
THAT’S A WRAP! FOLLOW-UP WITH A “THANK YOU” Congratulations! You attended the EXPO Job & Internship Fair, made many excellent connections, and participated in interviews. You are now confident that your job search is rolling! What is the next step? Follow-up by sending a thank you message to the employers you met at EXPO to reaffirm your interest, remind them of your qualifications, highlight your fit within their organization, and request an interview.
TIPS: •
Send thank you messages within a day or two after your meeting with the recruiter.
•
Many recruiters are out of the office and keep in touch via e-mail. Therefore, an email thank you is a timely, professional way to communicate.
•
Address your thank you message to an individual instead of the name of an office or department. Refer to your notes on the recruiter business cards you collected at EXPO.
•
Keep your thank you letter concise, but be sure to highlight your skills and experience and focus on the company’s needs, rather than your own. Your letter is an opportunity to tell the recruiter what you can offer the organization.
•
See examples of thank you letters, in the “Job Search Letters”, Chapter 4, of the B!G Job Search Guide on the Career Center website at hire.bgsu.edu.
