Read this EXPO Job & Internship Fair Guide thoroughly. Read the articles and examine the list of organizations registered for EXPO. Review the chart within this Guide that lists employers by career category, but consider all companies. This preparation will give you an advantage over students who come unprepared. Update your resume. Review the “Capture Employers’ Attention with an Outstanding Resume” article on page 4 and the “Resume Rubric” on page 5). Attend the Professional Resume Critique workshop on Wednesday, January 23, 2013 in Business Administration Building Room 114 between 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. or visit the Career Center to have your resume reviewed. Schedule an appointment by contacting the Career Center at 419372-2356 or bring in your resume during Drop-In Hours on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. Last Chance Resume Critiques will be available Monday, February 4, 2013 from 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. in the Career Center, 318 Math Sciences Building. Access your WorkNet account through your MyBGSU web portal under the Student Services Section in the Career Center links located on the left navigation bar. In WorkNet, upload your resume in the Documents section. Check your e-mail regularly to see if your resume has been accepted. If it is not accepted, follow the instructions provided and submit again. If the resume is accepted, access your WorkNet account and include your approved resume in the resume books by clicking on the Send My Resume tab in the Documents section. Employers access these books to search for candidates. Search WorkNet regularly for internships, co-ops, and career (postgraduation) employment opportunities. All employers on WorkNet are seeking BGSU students or recent alumni! Use the quick link on the right side of the home page to get a list of all positions posted for “Spring 2013 EXPO”. Schedule e-mail alerts. Create a “Saved Search” in your WorkNet account. Start by clicking on the Search Jobs & Internships tab and selecting BGSU WorkNet Listings. Choose the Advanced Search option and click the check box next to “save as:” and name the search.
BGSU Career Center | hire.bgsu.edu | 419-372-2356
Search the postings by selecting the position type of “Spring 2013 EXPO” and other desired criteria. Remember, if you use too many search criteria it will greatly limit your options. We suggest using “position type” or “major” for your search criteria. Don’t forget to go to the My Saved Searches tab after you submit your search criteria and click on Schedule to have WorkNet send you e-mail notifications when new employers register for the Fair. Research organizations attending the Fair by accessing your WorkNet account. Review organizations’ profiles in the Research Employers module (e.g., services and products, YouTube videos, pictures, stock symbols) and “Spring 2013 EXPO” postings. Don’t forget to review company websites to learn about their mission and vision, financial data, organizational structure, new developments, industry trends, and recent news reports. Search social media sites, such as Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn, to learn more about organizations. For additional information, read the “Online Job Search: Tweeting, Linking, and Creating a Personal Brand through Social Media” article on page 10 in this Guide. Attend EXPO prep workshops. Dates and times are located under the Events module of your WorkNet account and on the back page of this Guide. Practice your one-minute commercial and effectively communicate with employers. What’s a one minute commercial? Read “Introduce Yourself: The One-Minute Commercial” article on page 6 of this Guide.
DURING Attend the job and internship fair! Bring your BGSU ID card to check in. Make sure you attend the Fair early because employers will be creating interview schedules for the next day, and you do not want to show up after the schedules are full. Dress professionally. We recommend wearing a suit if you have one or other professional clothes, such as sports coats, blazers, button-down shirts, ties, blouses, slacks, skirts, etc. See the “Job and Internship Fair: What to Wear?” article on page 6 for more information. Take a quick walk through the job and internship fair. Review the employer list and identify locations
of organizations of interest. Prioritize the order in which you will visit your targeted organizations. Assess the wait time to speak with the recruiter. If you are nervous, you may not want to go directly to the organization of most interest first. Pay attention to the questions the recruiter is asking the other candidates; this allows you to prepare before speaking to the employer. Request to schedule an interview with organizations staying for next day interviews. Review the “Falcons SOAR!” article on page 9 for information about successful interview strategies. Keep track of your interviews by using the Student Interview Schedule form distributed at the Student Registration Table. Ask for recruiter business cards. Jot down notes on the back of the business card; this will help in writing thank you letters. Remember, you will be speaking with many employers throughout the day; taking notes and reviewing recruiting materials will help you keep track of important details and next steps.
AFTER Send a brief thank you letter or e-mail to the employers you met to reaffirm your interest and remind them of your qualifications and fit with their organizations. A list of attending recruiters will be posted on the Career Center’s website at hire.bgsu.edu after the job and internship fair. See the “Follow-up with a Thank You” article in this Guide on page 12. Apply for on-campus interviews. Check WorkNet to see which organizations will be returning to hold on-campus interviews at the Career Center. Search for positions in WorkNet, using the keywords “OnCampus Recruiting” to find and apply for positions of interest. Keep checking your e-mail regularly to see if you have been invited to schedule an interview with an organization coming on campus to conduct interviews. Don’t give up! Organizations post jobs, co-ops, and internships throughout the semester. If you need additional help with your search, contact the Career Center at 419-372-2356 to schedule an appointment with a career consultant.

Update your resume with the most relevant experiences and skills. Transferable skills are abilities acquired or used in previous experiences applicable to a variety of situations and tasks. For example, skills gained interacting with customers as a cashier can be used during a sales internship. Examples of transferable skills include public speaking, writing, leadership, and problem solving. Job and Internship Fair: What to Wear? In a job market where numerous candidates are competing to get the interview that gets the job, you need to get noticed for the right reasons. Your choices in dress can make a great first impression or may immediately lose your potential employer’s interest. So, what should you wear? When attending a job and internship fair or participating in an interview, the Career Center recommends wearing business professional attire. Review the information below to gain an understanding about standards and expectations for professional dress.
FOR MEN: » Conservative two-piece business suits in blue, brown, black, or grey. » Button-down shirts in white or solid colors that complement the suit. » A properly knotted tie in a coordinating color; a little pattern or small print is fine.

Developing and practicing a one-minute commercial about yourself and your experience will help you stand out. A one-minute commercial is a great tool to use when you first meet a potential employer. It is a summary of your talents, accomplishments, skills, and interests. You can use a one-minute commercial to showcase your background and experience. The following format will help you develop an excellent one-minute commercial for use at EXPO and other career fairs.
STEP 1. REVIEW: A. List 1-2 past jobs, projects, or tasks that are related to the position you are seeking. B. Identify 2-3 skills gained from these related experiences. C. List 2-3 personal qualities you possess that make you a good candidate.

Explain what you can offer by highlighting your relevant skills and experience. 4. Express your interest in learning more about the organization by asking a direct question or requesting an interview.
STEP 3. REHEARSE: A. Practice your one-minute commercial with friends or family; ask for feedback and suggestions! B. Time yourself to make sure your commercial is not too long. The more you practice, the more confident you will feel and appear.
THINGS TO CONSIDER In the first few seconds:
STEP 2. OUTLINE:
Look the employer in the eyes and smile
A. Choose the details you want to communicate during your commercial.

I previously interned in the Procurement Department for a company working in supply chain management. Introduce Yourself: The One-Minute Commercial First impressions are a critical component of the job search process. On average, recruiters attending BGSU’s EXPO Job and Internship Fairs stated that they spend between three and five minutes with each student, so be sure to make the most of the time you have with them.
E PO GUIDE
Nicole Lepore, Marketing, Finance, and Business Analytics & Intelligence Senior
There is no better way to find out what you want to do. It is important to remember that nothing is ever what it seems and things might be very different in the actual job than what you can gather from talking to someone. Internships also make classes so much easier. You can tailor classes to what you want to do because you had that experience. In the end, it will make you much more marketable and give you more negotiation power because you have the experience employers are seeking. What advice do you have for firsttime EXPO attendees? Prepare! Prepare! Prepare! Do not make small talk just to talk. Know the company, know the positions they are hiring for, and then fit yourself into those positions.
Why do you think it is important for students to get internships?
Go early! Talk to people who do not have a line at their table. Work out your nerves and use it as an opportunity to practice, but also think of it as a chance to expand your network and make connections. You never know what kind of people you may meet and what ways they can help you or what ways you can help them. The great thing about networking is that it is a two-way street and there are always opportunities to connect along the way.
Tell us about your past internship experiences.
What is the best thing you learned as an intern?
I have had two internships during my time at BGSU. The first was with the Make-A-Wish Foundation as a Development Intern. I was in charge of running their Wish Programs and securing placements. I was also responsible for creating the budget, logistics, handling media, and day-of planning for their largest fundraising event of the year. It was a lot of coordinating and planning beforehand, but also planning and running things the day of the event.
The best thing that I have learned is figuring out what I want to do with my life. I came into BGSU thinking I wanted to do a lot of different things, even marketing, but through my internships I learned what I like to do, and where my strengths are, and what I can and cannot do. For example, through the Make-AWish Foundation, I learned that I want to work with either a for-profit or nonprofit organization that gives back to the community.
Think about what you can do during your time there. Have a set of goals that you want to accomplish and talk to your supervisor about them. Identify the needs of the company and how you can help meet those needs.
The one-minute commercial is just a guide. You may not always be able to deliver it in its entirety. You may get interrupted during your commercial by an employer asking a particular question. Just go where the employer conversation takes you, but be sure to emphasize your interest in the organization and the skills and experience you have to offer.
STUDENT SPOTLIGHT II
Example of a One-Minute Commercial “Hello, my name is Sarah Career, and I am a senior accounting major in the College of Business Administration. I saw a job position on WorkNet for an entry-level accountant with your company, and I wanted to share my experience with you. Last summer, I interned with Tri-State Credit Union. There, I developed skills that allowed me to communicate with individuals and understand their needs. Due to my successful performance, they asked me return the following semester. I also worked part-time at an accounting firm called VanEck were I analyzed business operations, trends, costs, revenues, financial commitments, and obligations to project future revenues and expenses and to provide advice to clients. My experience at the credit union and accounting firm reaffirmed my interest in obtaining a position as an accountant. Can you tell me about the work environment at your company?”

Jobs, Internships, and Co-ops
The second internship I had was with ProMedica Health Systems as a Human Resources intern. I was in charge of running and re-vamping their employee engagement activities and appreciation initiatives. I had the opportunity to come up with a new recognition system to honor employees who had dedicated over 35 years of service to the organization.
Four-Year Career Action Plan
What advice do you have for firsttime EXPO attendees? Do at least a little research beforehand! You do not have to have the mission statements or each employee’s name memorized, but know what the company does before you talk to them. Plan ahead prior to the job fair and target employers. Map it out before you get there, so when you walk in you can be confident.
The key to a successful college experience is to be intentional, and the key to successfully finding a job or internship is the same. Use the Career Center’s Four-Year Career Action Plan as a guide while you navigate the process. Within the Plan, you will find an outline of the many experiences you can pursue each year and the steps you can take to achieve your career goals. You will notice that internships are recommended throughout your time here at BGSU. Pick up a copy when you visit the Career Center, located in 318 Math Sciences, or view the Four-Year Career Action Plan on the Career Center website for additional information.

Network for Success Networking is one of the most important job skills you will acquire in college. There are ample networking opportunities on campus. It is important to begin networking right away, and networking with classmates, faculty members, and advisors is a good first step. You never know who could assist you in the future! Practice and preparation will help develop skills needed to be effective during networking opportunities. As difficult as it might seem at first, the ability to make a positive impression on people will become extremely important as your career advances. To meet your full networking potential, use the following tips.
BUILD RELATIONSHIPS WITH YOUR FACULTY MEMBERS
know, such as family, friends, colleagues, classmates, etc. Don’t forget to include people like your dentist, doctor, hair stylist, clergy, and others you see on a regular basis. You can track new contacts you meet by collecting and documenting the information from business cards. LinkedIn is a popular online professional networking tool that offers a way to maintain up-to-date contact information for all of your connections. LinkedIn also provides a venue to build and enhance your network by suggesting connections to individuals with similar contacts.
FOLLOW UP AND PROVIDE THANK YOU NOTES

Not only will this benefit you in evaluating your career choices, but the experience will enhance your resume and make you a stronger candidate.
It is important not only to see your faculty member as an educator, but also as a professional contact. Professors play many roles serving as advisors, mentors, professional contacts, references, etc. They are individuals who may have significant contacts in other organizations outside of the classroom. Take class time as an opportunity to work hard and show dedication, while getting to know your faculty members on a professional level. Professors may take note of this behavior and be excellent referrals.

Nationally and at BGSU the majority of students work while attending college. Student employment is much more than earning a paycheck. Results from a BGSU research study on assessing student employee learning indicated that working on-campus offers an opportunity for all students to learn and gain transferable skills. Part-time positions also offer an outstanding opportunity to make connections with colleagues and supervisors.
Participating in an internship or co-op is an excellent opportunity to gain practical experience in your chosen field. Internships/co-ops provide a platform to network with other professionals and build lasting relationships. Your supervisor and other professionals you worked closely with may be excellent references for future positions. Even after the internship/co-op has ended, follow up with your contacts in order to continue building a professional relationship.
DOCUMENT YOUR NETWORK
By maintaining an up-to-date contact list, you can follow-up and provide them with current information on your job or internship search needs or the details of your new position. You also can send your contacts information that is related to their career interests. Networking is all about making connections and assisting others. When someone from your network helps you make connections with professionals in your field of interest or assists with your job or internship search be sure to send her/him a thank you note. Sending thank you notes lets you follow up in a professional manner, while also providing pertinent information about yourself.

Falcons SOAR! Use the SOAR Model to Answer Behavioral Interview Questions Employers know that past behavior is considered the best predictor of future behavior. Reviewing position descriptions is a great way to identify potential behavioral interview questions that may be asked. Please read the position description below, and see the behavioral interview questions that follow.

Please give an example of a time you created or suggested a communication piece designed to promote an event or activity. What media did you use? Why?
SAMPLE RESPONSE S – Situation As a Communication Studies major, I belong to the Association for Women in Communications (AWC). I am currently the Chair of the Promotions Committee, coordinating 3 members and publicity for the events and activities of the organization for this academic year. O – Obstacle Our Promotions Team was given the task of creating a “brand” for the organization using a variety of media, including social media. A - Action We met as a team with our advisor to discuss media options for our targeted audience. I suggested we survey our members and non-members in the major to see what media they typically use and possible topics of interest. I then created a draft of the survey and collaborated with the team for feedback. We then distributed the survey, and I analyzed the responses and identified recommendations. R – Result Applying the advice gained, we have enhanced the AWC Facebook page and created a LinkedIn account to encourage communication with alumni and professionals in the field. This has resulted in an increase of members, employer site visits, and the development of an Alumni Mentor Program. The SOAR Model is an informative way to organize your responses and communicate the skills, knowledge, and experience you have to offer an employer.

(This is a fictitious example of a Twitter conversation that may lead to an interview.)
Social media is prevalent in today’s society, and it can be used for a variety of functions. In the National Association of Colleges and Employers’ (NACE) 2012 Student Survey, 41% of participating college seniors reported using social media as a tool in their job search. Additionally, according to a survey from Jobvite in 2012, “73% of recruiters have successfully hired a candidate who was identified or introduced through a social network or social media.” Searching for a job is more than just submitting your resume. Utilizing social media and networking can increase your chances of obtaining an interview leading to your dream job! As you utilize social media and networking in your job search, be sure to create a consistent online brand. What is a brand? Think of your brand as an online identity or reputation, the assets or skills associated with your online presence. Make sure all of your social media platforms align with your professional online brand. For example, if an employer sees two different personas on your social media sites, they may wonder which is the one they could potentially hire. When creating your online brand be authentic; do not pretend to be someone you are not. Just as you would when writing your resume, be honest! Be true to your experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities; and showcase appropriate examples. Utilize industry keywords and jargon in your profiles, conversations, and posts. Communicate in a professional
10
manner, even within the Twitter constraints of 140 characters.
TIPS FOR USING SOCIAL MEDIA IN YOUR JOB SEARCH FACEBOOK: Facebook is a social networking site where users can create profiles to share status information, photos, and anything else with “friends” or the public. Facebook offers groups, pages, and applications for users to communicate, inform, and entertain; many employers have Facebook pages as well. It is seen primarily as a social platform. Here are some suggestions for appropriate use of Facebook. 1. Make your profile professional and create privacy settings. If you include a picture, make sure it is appropriate. For example, post a picture where only you are in the picture, wearing appropriate, professional attire. The background should be relatively neutral. Remove tags of yourself from any inappropriate pictures. If inappropriate pictures of you are up on someone else’s site, request that the friend takes down the pictures. Even if your site is private, an employer may have a connection to one of your friends and a way to view your content. Remember to always maintain your privacy settings. 2. Keep it positive. Negative posts showcase a negative
BGSU Career Center | hire.bgsu.edu | 419-372-2356
personality. A good rule of thumb is post only positive comments about your current or a potential employer. Additionally, if you are pursuing multiple opportunities, it may be a good idea to not post overly positive comments either. Gushing over Employer A while Employer B is watching may have a negative effect on your candidacy. Check out the Dean of Student’s website, Clear Eye for the Facebook Guy at http:// www.bgsu.edu/offices/sa/studentconduct/ page29925.html, to see a fictional example of an inappropriate Facebook profile.
LINKEDIN: LinkedIn is a professional networking site where users can create a profile, connect to others, and present information about their professional careers. LinkedIn offers groups and applications primarily for networking, idea and information sharing, and company research. 1. Create your professional profile. Upload or add information from your resume to demonstrate your knowledge, skills, and abilities. Remember, if you add a photo, keep it professional. 2. Ask for recommendations from your connections. Providing short 1-3 sentence comments on your skills, abilities, or knowledge can increase your marketability and add to your credibility. Ask for recommendations from your supervisors, colleagues, or clients for a well-rounded view of your experience. 3. Join alumni groups and career- or industry-related groups. Once you join groups, follow and contribute to conversations by communicating original ideas and asking questions and advice. Remember to announce that you are job searching and ask for leads. Find BGSU alumni and current students on LinkedIn by visiting http://linkedin.com/alumni 4. Research companies. Use the search feature to identify and investigate companies of interest. Find employees who are ‘IN’ your network and request to be introduced through a shared 1st connection. New to LinkedIn and want some help getting started? Visit http://help.linkedin.com/app/ answers/detail/a_id/398
profile and include a picture. Tweeters can follow common interests by using the # sign or “hashtag” in front of the common conversation term and then searching for that hashtag. If a user wants to reply or talk to another user, the use of the “@” symbol along with the other user’s Twitter username will create a public mention and tweet. A user also can “direct message” another person, which is a private message. 1. Follow companies. Look up and follow company Twitter feeds of interest. Recruiters may keep Twitter accounts to share information on campus visits, job & internship fairs, and job postings. Company Twitter feeds also may include recent news, product information, and job openings.
Be Smart About Your Job & Internship Search: Use Smartphone Apps Gone are the days of finding numerous jobs listed in the newspaper classified ads. In today’s technologyrich society, it is essential to learn to use the tools that are available. Most likely you are currently using
job posting boards and perhaps social media in your job & internship search. However, there are other resources to aid in your success. Have you used Smartphone apps for your search? There are countless job search apps available, but here are a few free ones to get you started. We encourage you to identify additional apps that are useful and let us know via Twitter @BGSUCareers or email careerservices@bgsu.edu.

3. Participate in #____chat. Look for and follow industry-related #hashtag conversations. Similar to LinkedIn, contribute to the conversations, advertise your job search, and ask for advice. For example, #imcchat is an integrated marketing communications chat that happens Wednesday nights at 8:00 p.m. ET. Find industry chats related to your field and follow. Follow-up with a “Thank You” You did it! You attended the EXPO Job & Internship Fair, made many excellent connections, participated in interviews, and now feel confident that your job search is off and running. What is the next step? Follow-up by sending a thank you letter to the employers you met at EXPO to reaffirm your interest, remind them of your qualifications, and highlight your fit within their organization. Sending a thank you letter is not only proper etiquette, it also reinforces your ability to follow through.
PLEASE KEEP THE FOLLOWING TIPS IN MIND » Send letters out in a timely manner. If your communication arrives within a day or two after your meeting with the recruiter, you have a better chance of being remembered. » Regarding mailing the letter versus sending an e-mail, consider that while it used to be best to mail a thank you note, many recruiters are traveling for extended periods and keep in touch via e-mail. A hand written note may be appreciated, but may not be seen until long after your EXPO Job & Internship Fair encounter. » Address your letter to an individual instead of the name of an office or department. » Remember to keep your letter concise; one-page is powerful and more likely to be read. As you highlight your abilities in the letter, focus on the company’s needs rather than your own. Your letter is an opportunity to tell the recruiter what you can offer the organization. For examples of thank you letters, review the “Job Search Letters” chapter of the B!G Job Search Guide on the Career Center website at hire.bgsu.edu.

SALON LOFTS GROUP, LLC WHO WE ARE From the day Salon Lofts (SL) was founded in 2003 in Columbus, Ohio, it was determined to be different: To reinvent the beauty industry for everyone involved. As CEO Daniel Sadd put it, “We will gladly zig when others zag.” Since then Salon Lofts has grown at a rapid yet economically viable and responsible rate. To date, SL leases space to more than 700 beauty professionals nationwide. SL presently operates 31 locations nationwide with another 8 locations under construction, opening in 2013. SL continuously adds staff to its support, facilities and sales teams as it enters new markets and builds out new locations. Selecting the right location has been critical to growth and overall success. SL experiences a 91.8 percent occupancy rate and a retention rate of 90 percent in an industry that normally experiences 60 percent turnover. In February 2012, SL completed a $24.5 million private placement of equity to purchase the assets of Salon Lofts and to fund the growth of Salon Lofts Group LLC (the successor company). The equity was primarily placed by a limited partnership led by merchant banking group of Raymond James Financial. This serves as further evidence that Salon Lofts is the indisputable industry leader. WHAT WE DO Salon Lofts (SL) is reinventing the beauty industry by integrating proprietary technology with niche-market brand appeal to benefit beauty professionals who want to operate their own businesses and consumers who desire an easy way to find high-quality stylists in their communities. SL does not operate like a typical salon in that it has two primary customers: beauty professionals and consumers. SL’s concept is to deliver quality, style, convenience and service to the consumer, while providing independent beauty professionals with the opportunity to run their own businesses with minimal risk. Beauty professionals rent space from SL, set their own schedules, establish their own pricing, create their own product offerings, etc., while keeping all profits. Unlike the traditional booth renter model, SL provides beauty professionals with an extensive array of online tools and a personalized marketing platform to foster growth and simplify their businesses.
