Research organizations attending the Fair by accessing your WorkNet account. Review organization profiles in the Research Employers module and “Spring 2014 EXPO” postings. Review company websites to learn about their mission and vision, financial data, organizational structure, new developments, industry trends, and recent news reports. Search social
media sites, such as Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn, to learn more about organizations. Attend EXPO prep workshops. See dates and times in the Events module of your WorkNet account and on the back page of this Guide. Check out the EXPO Prep Event on Thursday, January 30, 2014, for assistance with your resume, interviews, cover letters, and job & internship searches. Practice your one-minute commercial and effectively communicate with employers. What’s a one minute commercial? Read “Making an Excellent Initial Impression: The OneMinute Commercial” article on page 6 of this Guide.
Ask the recruiters for business cards. Jot down notes on the back of the business card; this will help in writing thank you letters. Since you will be speaking with many employers throughout the day; taking notes and reviewing recruiting materials will help you keep track of important details and next steps.
DURING
AFTER
Attend the job and internship fair early! Bring your BGSU ID card to check in. Dress professionally. Wear business professional attire. This means wearing a suit, but you can wear other professional clothes, such as sports coats, blazers, button-down shirts, ties, blouses, slacks, skirts, etc. Contact the Career Center at 419-3722356 if you have any questions about what to wear to EXPO. Take a quick walk through the job and internship fair. Review the employer list and identify locations of organizations of interest. Prioritize the order in which you will visit your targeted organizations. Listen to the questions the recruiter is asking the other candidates. Request to schedule an interview with organizations staying for next day interviews. Review the “Falcons SOAR!: Use the SOAR Model” article on page 10 for information about successful interview strategies. Use the Student Interview Schedule form distributed at the Student Registration Table to record your interviews.
Send a brief thank you letter or e-mail to the employers you met to reaffirm your interest and remind them of your qualifications and fit with their organizations. See the “That’s a Wrap! Follow-up with a Thank You” article on page 12 for more details. A list of attending recruiters will be posted on the Career Center’s website at hire.bgsu.edu after EXPO. Apply for on-campus interviews. Check WorkNet to see which organizations will be returning to hold on-campus interviews at the Career Center. Search for positions in WorkNet, using the keywords “OnCampus Recruiting” to find and apply for positions of interest. Check your e-mail regularly to see if you have been invited to schedule an interview with an organization coming on campus to conduct interviews. Don’t Give Up! Organizations post jobs, co-ops, and internships on WorkNet throughout the semester. If you need additional help with your search, contact the Career Center at 419-372-2356 to schedule an appointment with a career consultant.

GRAB EMPLOYERS’ ATTENTION WITH A WINNING RESUME Organizations often receive hundreds of resumes for one position, and your resume will generally receive a 30 second glance from a recruiter. Does your resume set you apart from your competition? How can you make your resume stand out from the rest? Review the “Resume Rubric” on page 5 for guidance on creating a resume that goes beyond the basics. Customize your resume for a specific position by using the job description to help guide your writing. Be sure to give examples of your skills and knowledge related to the requirements and responsibilities of the position. Include transferable skills, which are abilities acquired or used in previous experiences that might be applicable to the position. For example, the position may seek the ability to sell and your skills gained interacting with customers as a cashier can be applied for a sales internship. Additional examples

INTERNSHIP INSIGHT: STUDENTS SHARE THEIR STORIES
QA &
The EXPO Job and Internship Fair is a great opportunity to network with employers and discuss possible internships. In this competitive market, employers seek graduates who have completed internships and have gained meaningful experiences. Review the following Student Spotlights to learn more about internships.
STUDENT SPOTLIGHT I
new look. Photographing people in the museum helped to give the museum’s website a livelier appearance. I was also given the responsibility of photographing musicians and other people of interest that came to tour the museum, as well as capture the “Summer in the City” Series concerts held throughout my internship. In addition to photography I did some web work, updating inductee bios and timelines, and video work surrounding artifacts for videos to be put on the Rock Hall YouTube page.
Q:
What skills or other valuable insights did you gain from your experience?
A:
In terms of photography, I learned to make do with what I had, and learned how to adapt to certain situations. It is incredibly dark in parts of the museum, very unfit for photos, so if I was touring with a musician I had to learn how to create great photographs using the few resources I had available to me. Additionally, I learned how to balance multiple projects and gained valuable insight as to what it takes to keep the museum up and running as smoothly as possible. It was a very cool experience.
Q:
What advice do you have for students who are hoping to secure or are planning to complete and internship/co-op experience?
A: KATELYN LANDIS Visual Communication Technology Major
Q:
What types of projects or tasks did you work on or complete during your internship?
A:
Some of the responsibilities consisted of being professional, on time and always ready. I had to bring my camera every day because we never knew what surprises each day would bring. I also had to be flexible. There was always a tentative schedule of events or programs. My ongoing project was to photograph visitors throughout the museum to help give the Rock Hall website a

My second internship was in Cleveland, a familiar location, but I was uncertain whether I was capable in terms of my skillset. and professional stance. That’s all life experience and I am incredibly fortunate to have those experiences under my belt. Personally, I’ve had the pleasure of doing an array of projects in both my internships, so it really helped guide me into different directions of photography. I’m more excited than ever to graduate and get out into the real world. How will you take what you learned throughout your internship and apply it toward future career goals? Keep networking, keep my passion for learning, and keep aiming high. One of my mentors told me, “The more you accept the good things that come to you, the more good things will come.” That stuck with me, and I will apply that to my future goals, because only I can stop myself from achieving my full potential.

What types of projects or tasks did you work on or complete during your internship?
A:
I led the tri-weekly orientation program, which consisted of a 2.5 hour presentation for all new associates. I learned about Employment Eligibility forms such as the I-9 and W-4 taxation form. I also help lead the employee recognition program which awarded hard working associates for their job well done.

How did you acquire your internship experience? I worked at the park for 4 years in the field of entertainment
Q:
What skills or other valuable insights did you gain from your experience?
A:
I learned how to stay calm under pressure during busy days. All of my shifts went from 7:45 AM to 5:00 PM so this helped me develop the real world daily habits since most jobs do last from 9-5.
What advice do you have for students who are hoping to secure or are planning to complete internships or co-ops? Start with companies you know something about. Get to know the company inside and out before you apply. This will help make the transition a lot easier for you and the employer. Also make sure you develop some sort of mentor at your internship that will help you develop the skills needed in the job and after graduation.
Q:
Why do you think it is important for BGSU students to participate in internship or co-op experiences?
A:
In my opinion, real-world experiences outweigh even our time spent in the classroom at the university. I felt proud last year in my Organizational Behavior class when we went over HR policies in the workforce. My hand was raised for almost every question and I got to share what I learned with the

Q:
How will you take what you learned throughout your internship and apply it toward future career goals?

Q:
What skills or other valuable insights did you gain from your experience?
A:
I truly bettered my time management skills and learned how to handle my stress. I also narrowed down what I would like to do upon graduation and realized which career I would be happiest in.
Q:
What advice do you have for students who are hoping to secure or are planning to complete and internship/co-op experience?
A:
Don’t be afraid to apply for companies that seem out of sight, because they are not. As long as you are willing to work hard and have great enthusiasm, and present them with an excellent resume, your potential is endless.

Q:
How will you take what you learned throughout your internship and apply it toward future career goals?
Q: A:
How did you acquire your internship experience?
I found my internship by completing online research and looking for information and positions at the companies I was most interested in.
Q:
What types of projects or tasks did you work on or complete during your internship?
A:
Through my internship, I designed flyers promoting Discovery Education’s services to send to VIP
A:
My internship helped me immensely in regards to deciding the area of study in which I hope to someday work. The experience also taught me that to get anywhere you need to work hard, and that dedication to a position does pay off in the end. I’ve learned that once I’ve done enough, I need to do more, and that pushing myself will lead to my desired outcome. I wouldn’t be who I am today without my internship experience.
COOPERATIVE EDUCATION & INTERNSHIP PROGRAM The Career Center offers an optional, zero-credit hour course called “COOP 50” for students participating in a co-op or internship experience. This free course will maintain your full-time student status, even if you are not taking classes full-time. In addition, you will receive academic recognition on your transcript for all of your hard work. Enrolling is easy: go to hire.bgsu.edu for more details. Please complete the Liability Waiver and the Student Letter of Agreement and review the Policy Sheet. You can mail or drop off the signed documents to the Career Center, at 318 Math Sciences. If you are part of a major that requires an internship, co-op, or field experience as part of your degree, please speak to your College about meeting those requirements rather than enrolling in this optional program.

FALCONS SOAR! USE THE SOAR MODEL TO ANSWER BEHAVIORAL INTERVIEW QUESTIONS
WHAT IS SOAR? The SOAR Model is an informative way to organize your responses and communicate the skills, knowledge, and experience you have to offer an employer. Be sure to tie your examples to the position for which you are interviewing. Employers know that past behavior is considered the best predictor of future behavior. So, recruiters often use behavioral interview questions to learn how you have performed in previous jobs or internships. Employers are intentional about the behavioral interview questions they ask. They align these questions with the responsibilities and duties of the position and the traits needed to be successful. Reviewing position descriptions is a great way to identify potential behavioral interview questions that may be asked.
USE THE SOAR MODEL TO ANSWER BEHAVIORAL INTERVIEW QUESTIONS. First describe the SITUATION (S) in which you found yourself; then the OBSTACLE (O), problem or task you addressed, overcame, or implemented. Next explain the ACTION (A) you took to accomplish it, and finally, the RESULTS (R) you achieved. This Model enables you to keep your answer brief, to organize it logically, and to provide details about how you achieved a successful outcome. Be sure to incorporate all the letters, S-O-A-R, in your effective answer. Please read the position description below, and see the behavioral interview questions that follow.
Intern assists in the coordination of all activities and operations of the Programming Department. The intern reports directly to the Vice President of Programming with regards to all aspects of the position. Coordinate outreach activities for all programs receiving grant monies from Ohio Arts Council and Arts Midwest. Handle merchandise sales, before and after event, for entertainers requiring onsite merchandise personnel. Assist in providing a safe atmosphere for all entertainers, guests, and employees participating in programming events. Ensure customer relations and satisfaction are of highest priority with all staff. Final projects will include examples of promotion posters, local newspaper articles and website content, photographed/filmed performances, with a picture/video database, along with an oral presentation. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Outlook, etc.)
POSSIBLE BEHAVIORAL INTERVIEW QUESTIONS: • How do you decide what gets top priority when scheduling your time? • Share an example of how you were able to motivate employees or coworkers. • Tell me about a situation that occurred in the past year in which you had to deal with an upset customer or coworker. • Organization is a trait that will help you to be successful in this internship. Please give an example that illustrates your ability to organize and manage projects.

1. Read the position description
carefully. Identify the duties and required traits. 2. Research the typical responsibilities of that position on O*Net (http:// www.onetonline.org/). 3. Think of your most successful related accomplishments or experiences (e.g., internship, volunteer work, student organization, class projects, part-time job, etc.). 4. Include positive examples. Don’t describe a social event or situation that included improper behavior or poor decision making. 5. Provide just enough details to give your interviewer a picture of how you perform, and link it to the position for which you are applying. For more details about behavioral interviewing questions and how to answer them, go to hire.bgsu.edu, click on Career Resources on the Student Page, and then the B!G Job Search Guide. Below is a behavioral interview question for the Arts/Entertainment Intern position described earlier.
QUESTION: Tell me about a time in which you had to make a relatively quick decision. What was the outcome?
SAMPLE RESPONSE S – Situation
The summer of my junior year of college, I interned as the House Manager for my hometown Community Theatre. For the duration of the summer, I was responsible for managing ticket sales, conducting concession inventory, training ushers, marketing events, maintaining customer relations, in addition to overseeing house operations.
O – Obstacle
For the first performance of the summer season, we had a packed house and three of our ushers did not show up for their shift. Major donors were in attendance and it was imperative that we served our patrons with the best customer service.
A – Action
Because of the importance of providing a quality theatrical experience on opening night, I quickly pulled stage hands from back stage and asked them to usher. They were glad to assist and able to return to their assigned posts before the show began.
R – Result Major donors were well served and as a result, continued their support through donations for the upcoming season. Had we not acted quickly, word of our disorganization would have impacted our attendance record for the remainder of the season.

THE ONLINE JOB SEARCH: TWEETING, LINKING, AND CREATING A PERSONAL BRAND THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA Social media is prevalent in today’s society, and it can be used for a variety of functions. In the National Association of Colleges and Employers’ (NACE) 2012 Student Survey, 41% of participating college seniors reported using social media as a tool in their job search. Additionally, according to a survey from Jobvite in 2013, “78% of recruiters have successfully hired a candidate who was identified or introduced through a social network or social media.” Searching for a job is more than just submitting your resume. Utilizing social media and networking can increase your chances of obtaining an interview leading to your dream job! As you utilize social media and networking in your job search, be sure to create a consistent online brand. What is a brand? Think of your brand as an online identity or reputation, the assets or skills associated with your online presence. Make sure all of your social media platforms align with your professional online brand. For example, if an employer sees two different personas on your social media sites, they may wonder which is the one they could potentially hire. When creating your online brand be authentic; do not pretend to be someone you are not. Just as you would when writing your resume, be honest! Be true to your experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities; and showcase appropriate examples. Utilize industry keywords in your profiles, conversations, and posts. Communicate in a professional manner, even within the Twitter constraints of 140 characters.
TIPS FOR USING SOCIAL MEDIA IN YOUR JOB SEARCH LINKEDIN LinkedIn is a professional networking site where users can create a profile, connect to others, and present information about their professional careers. LinkedIn offers groups and applications primarily for networking, idea and information sharing, and company research. According to a 2013 Jobvite poll, LinkedIn is the social media network of choice, with 94% of recruiters using this site. 1. Create your professional profile. Upload or add information from your resume to demonstrate your knowledge, skills, and abilities. Remember, if you add a photo, keep
it professional. Include information about your key career or work-related accomplishments, experience, or knowledge. Utilize the profile box with quick, short snippets of information that best describe your background and work history. According to an article from the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), “At the top of a LinkedIn profile is a small box containing “fast facts” about each user. Since this box is likely the first thing that another LinkedIn user would see when landing on a LinkedIn profile, this box is incredibly important real estate.” 2. Ask for recommendations from your connections. Providing short 1-3 sentence comments on your skills, abilities, or knowledge can increase your marketability and add to your credibility. Ask for recommendations from your supervisors, colleagues, or clients for a well-rounded view of your experience. 3. Join alumni groups and career- or industry-related groups. Once you join groups, follow and contribute to conversations by communicating original ideas and asking questions. Remember to announce that you are job searching and ask for advice or leads. It is best not to ask for a job. Find BGSU alumni and current students on LinkedIn by visiting http://linkedin.com/alumni. 4. Research companies. Use the search feature to identify and investigate companies of interest. Find employees who are ‘IN’ your network and request to be introduced through a shared 1st connection. New to LinkedIn and want some help getting started? Visit http://help.linkedin.com/ app/answers/detail/a_id/398.
FACEBOOK Facebook is a social networking site where users can create profiles to share status information, photos, and anything else with “friends” or the public. Facebook offers groups, pages, and applications for users to communicate, inform, and entertain; many employers have Facebook pages as well. It is seen primarily as a social platform. Here are some suggestions for appropriate use of Facebook. 1. Make your profile professional and create privacy settings.
If you include a picture, make sure it is appropriate. For example, post a picture where only you are in the picture, wearing professional attire. The background should be relatively neutral. Remove tags of yourself from any inappropriate pictures. If inappropriate pictures of you are up on someone else’s site, request that the friend takes down the pictures. Even if your site is private, an employer may have a connection to one of your friends and a way to view your content. Remember to always maintain your privacy settings. 2. Keep it positive. Negative posts showcase a negative personality. A good rule of thumb is post only positive comments about your current or a potential employer. Additionally, if you are pursuing multiple opportunities, it may be a good idea not to post overly positive comments either. Gushing over Employer A while Employer B is watching may have a negative effect on your candidacy. Check out the Dean of Student’s website, Clear Eye for the Facebook Guy at http://www.bgsu.edu/offices/ sa/studentconduct/page29925. html, to see a fictional example of an inappropriate Facebook profile.
TWITTER Twitter is a micro blog where users are able to “tweet” information in 140 characters or fewer. Users can create a brief profile and include a picture. Tweeters can follow common interests by using the # sign or “hashtag” in front of the common conversation term and then searching for that hashtag. If a user wants to reply or talk to another user, the use of the “@” symbol along with the other user’s Twitter username will create a public mention and tweet. A user also can “direct message” another person, which is a private message. 1. Follow companies. Look up and follow company Twitter feeds of interest. Recruiters may keep Twitter accounts to share information on campus visits, job & internship fairs, and job postings. Company Twitter feeds also may include recent news, product information, and job openings. 2. Follow relevant #hashtags to your search.
Some examples of job #hashtags include: #tweetmyjobs, #sportsjobs, and #salesjobs. View a list of the Top 50 Twitter hashtags for job seekers at http://careerenlightenment.com/50hottest-twitter-hashtags-for-jobseekers. 3. Participate in #____chat. Look for and follow industryrelated #hashtag conversations. Similar to LinkedIn, contribute to the conversations, advertise your job search, and ask for advice. For example, #internpro: Internship resource YouTern hosts this weekly chat to offer college students a chance to learn more about finding internships, networking, mentoring, and other parts of the career preparation process. Check out http://www.onlinecollege. org/2012/03/14/25-twitter-chats-forvaluable-career-advice/ for additional job search hashtags. These are just a few tips about using social media in your job search. Google “social media job search” or another key word combination for more tips and information, blogs, and articles. Finally, Google yourself to see what comes up. Is it all positive?

E PO GUIDE GUIDESPRING 2014 E PO
SPRING 2014
THAT’S A WRAP! FOLLOW-UP WITH A “THANK YOU” You did it! You attended the EXPO Job & Internship Fair, made many excellent connections, and participated in interviews. You are now confident that your job search is rolling! What is the next step? Follow-up by sending a thank you message to the employers you met at EXPO to reaffirm your interest, remind them of your qualifications, highlight your fit within their organization, and request an interview. Sending a thank you letter is not only proper etiquette, it also reinforces your ability to follow through.
SO BE SURE TO:
» Send thank you messages within a day or two after your meeting with the recruiter. » A thank you e-mail vs. a letter: While it used to be best to mail a thank you note, many recruiters are traveling for extended periods and keep in touch via e-mail. A hand written note may be appreciated, but may not be seen until long after your EXPO Job & Internship Fair encounter. » Address your e-mail to an individual instead of the name of an office
or department. (Be sure to ask for recruiters’ business cards.) » Keep your thank you letter concise; a couple of targeted paragraphs are more likely to be read. As you highlight your abilities in the letter, focus on the company’s needs, rather than your own. Your letter is an opportunity to tell the recruiter what you can offer the organization. See examples of thank you letters, in the “Job Search Letters”, Chapter 4, of the B!G Job Search Guide on the Career Center website at hire.bgsu.edu.

INT. VET In the early 1950s, Dart’s Chairman, William A. Dart (“W A”), began working with his father, William F. Dart, in the small family business in Mason, Michigan. Working together at Dart Manufacturing Company, father and son designed and produced many different products including metal tape measures, identification “dog” tags for military personnel, key cases, and refrigerator shelving units. They then branched out into the toy business and one of their most popular creations was the “Marble Race Game” which was featured in television advertising in selected markets. In the late 1950s, W A and his father shifted their focus to developing a machine that would produce high quality foam cups from a relatively new material called expandable polystyrene (EPS). On April 20th, 1960, they shipped their first order, and by 1963 had changed the name of their company to Dart Container Corporation. The dream that was born in a one-room shop grew into a global company as a result of the dedication of valued workers, and their countless contributions.
