BRUSSelS political and economical significance is leading to a population growth in the next years, whose main development area is the BrusselsCharleroi Canal which is cutting a industrial swath through the Belgian capital. However the planned cost-intensive large-scale projects in that context will not cause an improvement of quality of urban life for inhabitants who are less privileged. THe PROJeCT SiTe is located adjacent to the Brussels-Charleroi Canal in an industrial area of the district Anderlecht which is marked by many brownfield sites and vacant industrial buildings. in spite of its central location in Anderlecht residents of neighboring quarters rarely step inside the project site. The lack of public, cultural or community facilities in the adjacent neighborhoods requires new lively gathering spaces, which could create a new identity for the canal zone and Anderlecht. For achieving this, a successive strategy in the development process plays the key role. iN A FiRST PHASe temporary concepts for a facade conversion of the existing industrial buildings should be applied through a participative approach. This should arouse interest amongst residents in the surrounding area and effect more dynamism in the project site. iN A SeCOND PHASe it is appropriate to provide new public usages in significant vacancies, which serve as attractors for the surrounding neighborhoods and therefore lead to a revitalization of the whole area. BASeD ON THe PReviOUS PHASe and the connecting axis of the three reactivated existing building groups as well as the consideration of existing spatial borders follows a new structuring of the area. The southern area should offer a heterogeneous building structure with a versatile range of functions in the ground floor (retail, services, gastronomy, offices as well as flexible spaces for temporary use) and housing units for different target groups in the upper floors. At the waterfront on the opposite side of the canal studios and workshop spaces are designed, divided into small sections, similar to the existing building structure of the context.

in the South of mexico city, and part of a steadily growing metropolis of more than 20 million people, still remains a relict since pre-hispanic times: the "floating" gardens called CHINAMPAS. These artificially constructed islands in the shallow lake beds of the district xochimilco originally served for agricultural production during pre-colonial times and were spread out over a large area in the Valley of Mexico. The filling up of many channels after the conquest of mexico by the Spaniards and the immense urban growth especially in the second half of the 20th century finally led to a steadily shrinking of the chinampa territory so that today its continued existence is threatened despite the status of a UNESCO world cultural heritage site. however still today many chinampas are used as cultivation land for vegetables, flowers and different plants and secure the livelihoods of some inhabitants of the poorer city district of Xochimilco. in addition, the network of channels in xochimilco is a popular destination for tourists and residents of Mexico City. the ArchitecturAl project of the chinampa cultural center emphasizes the cultural value of the chinampa system and promotes the traditional cultivation methods, and thus strengthens a common identity for Xochimilco. A museum, which informs about the history and the unique agricultural system of the chinampas, a seminar and cultivation area, a boatbuilding workshop for "trajineras" - the dominating transport system in the channels of xochimilco – and a market square, where products cultivated on chinampas are sold, form the central functions of the project which should create a socially and ecologically sustainable exchange between chinampa farmers, tourists and residents of Xochimilco.

the project is a spatial reply to the need of suitable accommodations for migrants and socially deprived people in north Africa - based on the development potential of dakar. At present time we experience a stigmatization of migrants especially from Africa in european policy. but in fact just a small percentage of migrants tries to get to Europe. The main migration flows take place in north Africa itself, in search for better and safer living conditions and to secure a minimum subsistence. Dakar has been affected by a continuous influx of migrants during recent decades being one of the main migration destinations in north Africa. Because of deficient governmental assistance in infrastructural and financial issues, many poor people settle in the peripheral areas leading to an overflow on the outskirts of Dakar. Without any urban qualities and economic perspectives for the inhabitants, those areas degenerate quickly into slums, many of them principally located in the nearby flood hazard coastal areas. on the other hand a huge amount of open spaces in more centrally located areas is available and not used, like the former airport area and the rooftops in the city centre. dakar should be seen as a worthy place also for poorer people and migrants to live in better conditions and to have the chance to secure their subsistence. in two different strategies (short term and long term) migrants should influence urban transformations in dakar in a positive way through participation and reanimate open unused spaces inside the city. by adapting informal structures those spaces are converted into places where a mutual positive dependence between the original inhabitants and new residents is made possible to generate a socially and economically sustainable relation in the long term.

Between the city centre and the prospectively closed down airport a residential district is forming an urban area with the highest density in Dakar. On the contrary the area of the international airport Léopold Sédar Senghor will become a huge central urban waste land with a size of 800 hectares.
Along the coast of Dakar many informal areas or on contaminated ground. Actually the periphery is in a constant expansion with the consequence of getting isolated from the rest of the city. A homogenous social structure has been arisen out of involuntary segregation.
A highway passing along the southern coastline connects the peninsula of Dakar with the surrounding area. Another urban freeway is running between the city centre in the South and the international airport in the North. The biggest increasing slums in the peripheral northeastern part are inadequately connected with the rest of the city.

FILL THE GAP A noticeable characteristic of Dakar’s building structure in the inner-city area are the often unused, empty rooftops and the diversity of buildings heights due to a missing re-gulation by law. around 30 percent of the already built structure by adding vertical extensions. The aim must be the activation of the rooftop areas as long as the building structure permits it.

Dakar is threatened many months of water shortages because it is raining just from July till October. The precipitation in those months (about 174,000 liters per year) is collected, stored in a subterranean cistern and used for the irrigation of the gardening spaces during arid months.
Solar energy is fed into the power supply system by using collectors on the top surface of the energy funnel. Due to its geographic position Dakar has ideal conditions for this process.

the cuRRent cOnditiOn of the aerodrome area in damme is characterized by a diverse, probably arbitrarily grown mix of buildings whose correlation seems to be ambiguous. the site is framed by hangars in the West, log cabins, serving as temporary accommodation facilities, in the east and the runway in the south. the aRchitectuRal design is based on this segmentation, takes up the form of the cylindric volumes which are already existing on the ground and completes a grid stretching from west to east. the new cylinders contain all the necessary and appropriate rooms and functions and are surrounded by the main area - the aircraft exhibition space. this museum hall is separated from the exterior space just by a glass facade, permitting a permanent visibility of the exhibited vintage airplanes. Both main volumes become accessible on three different ways: via the exhibition floor of the museum hall, via ramps which permit a different perception of the aircraft or directly via the exterior space, in the case of operating museum hall and restaurant/hotel separately. glass funnels are located within the two big cylinders which allow an additional illumination, ventilation and communication between the different functions and which serve as rainwater storages. a funnel-shaped structural system and perforations in the ceiling are implemented in the exhibition hall. these ensure a concept of supporting structure, illumination and ventilation. the restaurant is located in close proximity to the runway and could be extended into the outside area. the same visual relations are provided for the hotel rooms as well. the interaction between exhibition hall and the installed cylindric volumes, which are connected by a staged walkway, but also their internal autonomy are the central characteristics of the architectural design.

Both works - "Boundaries" and "no man's land" are generative and interactive graphics based on an algorithmic language which is generated with the program "Processing". the graphics were created for a live screening event and exhibition in mexico city where visitors could intervene in the development of the drawing. in "BOundaRies" a generative and dynamic graphic is correlated with two quotes of leo tolstoy about the appropriation of space. The user could influence the final composition by defining new "territories" which finally evolves its own dynamic. the work "nO man's land" is thought as an antithesis of the work "Boundaries". the graphic is based on a similar algorithm and can also be influenced by the interaction of a viewer. But it becomes nearly impossible to define the composition of the drawn lines due to an algorithm which leads to a continuous growing of line structures that are taking over the control.

AT103 Oaxaca de Juárez, mexico 2014 Competition Cultural center with artist residence, area 1200 m² UABJO, Oaxaca Project Leader: Preliminary design, architectural design, team coordination
San Pablo Cultural Center, located in the historical center of Oaxaca de Juárez, proposes a connection with the cathedral and the zócalo square via a cultural circuit which is focussed on pedestrians and non motorized transport. The project permits a permeability of both facades and an extension of the public realm into the interior of the building. One part of the former basement is elevated till the ground level to create a public square, the other part stays sunken and offers an event space for different cultural or social activities. The disposition of the site allows to implement a programmatic filter between public and private areas. The basement stage as well as the three upper volumes are designed as open spaces which enable a flexible use and a wide range of activities that extend the cultural program of the university. In the private part an artist residency is included with communal areas. In between of public and private realm the administrative area is situated, working as a mediator space. Traditional construction systems and local materials (like green cantera in the facades) are considered as an important characteristic of the cultural center. The multiplicity of patios and voids ensures a suitable air circulation which is complemented by a range of trees that guarantee a shady atmosphere. milan 44 is located in the neighborhood of Colonia Juarez, an area of mexico City which is marked by residential buildings dating back to the early 20th century, empty lots caused by the earthquake from 1985 and an intensive renewing process in the last years. The building from the 1970s accommodated an automotive parts distributor but has been abandoned for many years. Originally the main part of the building served as a storage, for which reason two floors did not have natural illumination and ventilation. The restoration projects aim is to preserve and refurbish the existing concrete structure. however, the intention is to create a more transparent character which opens the building to its surrounding due to the elimination of the former facade. The new facade and various perforations of ceilings offer natural ventilation and illumination in all spaces. new uses are implemented in the concrete skeleton, a local market and restaurant in the ground and first floor, a two-storey yoga studio and four studios or office spaces in the second floor and another restaurant in the third floor with access to a roof terrace. The materiality keeps a "rough" character using concrete, steel and metal meshes which are contrasted by pine wood elements and ceramic finishing. following a study of the main metro lines and an analysis of the potentiality of each plot of land owned by the public transportation system in Mexico City, the metro station "Allende" emerges as a site with high development potential. The proposal has the objective of a realignment of the underground track level, the relocation of existing shops and the incorporation of new uses, 20 apartments and public or cultural services which tend to offer a major diversity and profitability of the available space. in the two southern lots an apartment building and an adjoining building to the library "biblioteca del Congreso de la unión" are located. The removal of commercial space on the ground floor allows to merge the newly gained space with the pedestrian street Motolinia on one side and with the existing fore court of the library on the other side, generating small public squares in the entrance areas of the metro station. in the two northern lots the relocated retail spaces are concentrated in new buildings. The proposal's purpose is the improvement of accessibility to the metro entrances, joining the four lots to a new complex. Reubicación de locales Los cuatro locales comerciales de los predios ubicados en el sur se trasladan a los predios del norte.
Acceso actual El acceso a los andenes del Metro ocupa gran parte de la planta baja, pero tanto los locales fijos como el ambulantaje bloquean su visibilidad, generan una circulación compleja para los usuarios y provoca que los cuatro predios no se perciban como un conjunto.

Anexo de la Biblioteca del Congreso de la Unión
Edificio de viviendas
Nuevo uso Los dos predios del sur tendrán un nuevo uso. El predio vecino a la Biblioteca del Congreso de la Unión tendrá un edificio que funciona como anexo de la biblioteca y en el predio conectado a la calle Motolinía se ubicará un edificio con 20 viviendas.
Propuesta de reorganización Se reorganiza el nivel calle por medio de tres franjas dominantes, las cuales proponen una nueva circulación y estructura de los predios del Metro Allende. Las franjas se dividen así: en un extremo los acesos al Metro, la franja del centro para usos mixtos (comercio y espacio público) y en el otro extremo los accesos a las plantas superiores.

The city of Acapulco is considering a new sea bus system, called Maribús, part of its future public transport system. based on the master planning of the architecture firm Arquitectura 911 four sites were selected for Maribús stations in different locations in the bay of Acapulco. The project of the Maribús station icacos is situated in the tourist area of Acapulco Diamante. Taking up the existing urban structuring of roundabouts the station icacos forms a circular icon - a viewing platform with access to the Maribus pier - inside the bay of Acapulco. The viewing platform can be reached from the redesigned square Plaza españa via a long, elevated bridge crossing the beach. A new service building with ticket office, a commercial space and public toilets is located in the same square which is visually extended till the coast highway Avenida Costera. in relation to local building tradition and for ensuring an easier maintenance, the whole complex consists of concrete elements with different finishing.
