Prolog Surah Muḥammad (Arabic: ـورة ُمـ َحـ َّمـد ُ , "Chapter of َ س Muhammad") is the 47th surah of The Holy Qur'an with 38 ayat. This thirty-eight verse chapter was revealed in Medina. It is generally understood that Median chapters focus on the establishment of a functioning Muslim society. This one is no different and tackles several subjects including war, what happens to those who try to prevent others from converting to Islam and the futility of opposing God and His Prophet. At the time of revelation, the disbelievers had succeeded in driving Prophet Muhammad SAW, may the mercy and blessings of God be upon him, and his followers out of Mecca, however, by doing so they sealed their own fate. The title comes from the mention of Prophet Muhammad’s name in verse two. Surah Muḥammad (árabe: ـورة ُمـ َحـ َّمـد ُ , "Chapter of َ س Muhammad") es la 47ª surah del Sagrado Corán con 38 ayat. Este capítulo de treinta y ocho versículos fue revelado en Medina. En general se entiende que los capítulos de la mediana se centran en el establecimiento de una sociedad musulmana que funcione. Este no es diferente y aborda varios temas, incluyendo la guerra, lo que les sucede a aquellos que tratan de impedir que otros se conviertan al Islam y la futilidad de oponerse a Dios y a Su Profeta.

The Translation of Surah 47 Muhammad (Prophet Muhammad SAW) 1. Those who disbelieve [in the Oneness of Allah, and in the Message of Prophet Muhammad ], and hinder (men) from the Path of Allah (Islamic Monotheism), He will render their deeds vain . 2. But those who believe and do righteous good deeds, and believe in that which is sent down to Muhammad ( ), for it is the truth from their Lord, He will expiate from them their sins, and will make good their state. 3. That is because those who disbelieve follow falsehood, while those who believe follow the truth from their Lord. Thus does Allah set forth their parables for mankind. 4. So, when you meet (in fight Jihad in Allah's Cause), those who disbelieve smite at their necks till when you have killed and wounded many of them, then bind a bond firmly (on them, i.e. take them as captives). Thereafter (is the time) either for generosity (i.e. free them without ransom), or ransom (according to what benefits Islam), until the war lays down its burden. Thus [you are ordered by Allah to continue in carrying out Jihad against the disbelievers till they embrace Islam (i.e. are saved from the punishment in the Hell-fire) or at least come under your protection], but if it had been Allah's Will, He Himself could certainly have punished them (without you). lets you fight), in order to test you, some with others. But those who are killed in the Way of Allah, He will never let their deeds be lost, 5. He will guide them and set right their state. 6. And admit them to Paradise which He has made known to them (i.e. they will know their places in Paradise more than they used to know their houses in the world). 7. O you who believe! If you help (in the cause of) Allah, He will help you, and make your foothold firm. 8. But those who disbelieve (in the Oneness of Allah Islamic Monotheism), for them is destruction, and (Allah) will make their deeds vain. 9. That is because they hate that which Allah has sent down (this Qur'an and Islamic laws, etc.), so He has made their deeds fruitless. 10. Have they not travelled through the earth, and seen what was the end of those before them? Allah destroyed them completely and a similar (fate awaits) the disbelievers. 11. That is because Allah is the Maula (Lord, Master, Helper, Protector, etc.) of those who believe, and the disbelievers have no Maula (lord, master, helper, protector, etc.). 12. Certainly! Allah will admit those who believe (in the Oneness of Allah Islamic Monotheism) and do righteous good deeds, to Gardens under which rivers flow (Paradise), while those who disbelieve enjoy 8

themselves and eat as cattle eat, and the Fire will be their abode. 13. And many a town, stronger than your town (Makkah) (O Muhammad ) which has driven you out We have destroyed. And there was none to help them. 14. Is he who is on a clear proof from his Lord, like those for whom their evil deeds that they do are beautified for them, while they follow their own lusts (evil desires)? 15. The description of Paradise which the Muttaqun (pious - see V.2:2) have been promised is that in it are rivers of water the taste and smell of which are not changed; rivers of milk of which the taste never changes; rivers of wine delicious to those who drink; and rivers of clarified honey (clear and pure) therein for them is every kind of fruit; and forgiveness from their Lord. (Are these) like those who shall dwell for ever in the Fire, and be given, to drink, boiling water, so that it cuts up their bowels? 16. And among them are some who listen to you (O Muhammad ) till, when they go out from you, they say to those who have received knowledge: "What has he said just now? Such are men whose hearts Allah has sealed, and they follow their lusts (evil desires).

17. While as for those who accept guidance, He increases their guidance, and bestows on them their piety. 18. Do they then await (anything) other than the Hour, that it should come upon them suddenly? But some of its portents (indications and signs) have already come, and when it (actually) is on them, how can they benefit then by their reminder? 19. So know (O Muhammad ) that La ilaha illAllah (none has the right to be worshipped but Allah), and ask forgiveness for your sin, and also for (the sin of) believing men and believing women. And Allah knows well your moving about, and your place of rest (in your homes). 20. Those who believe say: "Why is not a Surah (chapter of the Qur'an) sent down (for us)? But when a decisive Surah (explaining and ordering things) is sent down, and fighting (Jihad - holy fighting in Allah's Cause) is mentioned (i.e. ordained) therein, you will see those in whose hearts is a disease (of hypocrisy) looking at you with a look of one fainting to death. But it was better for them (hypocrites, to listen to Allah and to obey Him). 21. Obedience (to Allah) and good words (were better for them). And when the matter (preparation for Jihad) is resolved on, then if they had been true to Allah, it would have been better for them.

22. Would you then, if you were given the authority, do mischief in the land, and sever your ties of kinship? 23. Such are they whom Allah has cursed, so that He has made them deaf and blinded their sight. 24. Do they not then think deeply in the Qur'an, or are their hearts locked up (from understanding it)? 25. Verily, those who have turned back (have apostated) as disbelievers after the guidance has been manifested to them, Shaitan (Satan) has beautified for them (their false hopes), and (Allah) prolonged their term (age). 26. This is because they said to those who hate what Allah has sent down: "We will obey you in part of the matter," but Allah knows their secrets. 27. Then how (will it be) when the angels will take their souls at death, smiting their faces and their backs? 28. That is because they followed that which angered Allah, and hated that which pleased Him. So He made their deeds fruitless. 29. Or do those in whose hearts is a disease (of hypocrisy), think that Allah will not bring to light all their hidden ill-wills? 30. Had We willed, We could have shown them to you, and you should have known them by their marks, but surely, you will know them by the tone of their speech! And Allah knows all your deeds. 11

31. And surely, We shall try you till We test those who strive hard (for the Cause of Allah) and the patient ones, and We shall test your facts (i.e. the one who is a liar, and the one who is truthful). 32. Verily, those who disbelieve, and hinder (men) from the Path of Allah (i.e. Islam), and oppose the Messenger ( ) (by standing against him and hurting him), after the guidance has been clearly shown to them, they will not hurt Allah in the least, but He will make their deeds fruitless, 33. O you who believe! Obey Allah, and obey the Messenger (Muhammad your deeds.
) and render not vain
34. Verily, those who disbelieve, and hinder (men) from the Path of Allah (i.e. Islam); then die while they are disbelievers, Allah will not forgive them. 35. So be not weak and ask not for peace (from the enemies of Islam), while you are having the upper hand. Allah is with you, and will never decrease the reward of your good deeds. 36. The life of this world is but play and pastime, but if you believe (in the Oneness of Allah Islamic Monotheism), and fear Allah, and avoid evil, He will grant you your wages, and will not ask you your wealth. 37. If He were to ask you of it, and press you, you would covetously withhold, and He will bring out all your (secret) ill-wills. 12

38. Behold! You are those who are called to spend in the Cause of Allah, yet among you are some who are niggardly. And whoever is niggardly, it is only at the expense of his ownself. But Allah is Rich (Free of all wants), and you (mankind) are poor. And if you turn away (from Islam and the obedience of Allah), He will exchange you for some other people, and they will not be your likes.

Verses 1 – 11 Those without a protector Those who disbelieve and try to prevent others from believing, God will make their good deeds worthless. However, those who do good and believe in what was revealed to Muhammad, the truth from God, God will remove from them their misdeeds and improve their condition. Those who disbelieve follow falsehood whilst those who believe follow the truth. In this way God shows others what they really are. When you meet disbelievers in the battlefield, strike their necks and securely bind those who are left. After the battle you may release them, either by grace or by ransom. God could have taken vengeance Himself, but He ordered an armed struggle to test some of you against others. Those killed in God’s 15

cause will never lose their good deeds. He will guide them, improve their condition and admit them into the Paradise He has already made known to them. God will support the believers and make them steadfast; as for the disbelievers, they will find misery and wasted deeds. They disliked what God revealed so their deeds are worthless. As they travel through the land they see what became of the disbelievers from the past nations. God utterly destroyed them, and a similar fate awaits these disbelievers. God protects the believers, but the disbelievers have no protector whatsoever. Verses 12 – 19 Disbelievers and hypocrites Those who believe and do good deeds will be admitted to Gardens under which rivers flow. The disbelievers may take their pleasures from this world, but the Fire will be their eternal home. God destroyed many cities that were stronger in might than Mecca; they had no helper. Can the one who follows clear guidance be compared to the person who commits foul deeds and follows his own desires!? In the descriptions of Paradise, the righteous are promised rivers of pure water, milk, wine, and clear honey. They will also have fruit of every kind and forgiveness from their Lord. These people are nothing like those who are in the Fire drinking down scalding water that burns their intestines.

There are some (the hypocrites) who listen to Muhammad and then afterwards ask the knowledgeable ones, "What did he just say?" They had corrupt intentions and hence did not understand anything, nor did they care about it. Whereas, those who seek guidance, God facilitates it for them. He increases them in guidance and God-consciousness. Are they waiting for the Day of Judgment to take them by surprise!? Waiting until the last moment will be far too late. There is no deity but God, so (Muhammad) ask Him for forgiveness and to forgive the believers, men and women. God knows your activities and when you rest. Verses 20 – 28 And their deeds are worthless Those who believe ask why God has not sent a revelation allowing them to fight. However, when such an order is given, you can see those in whose hearts is hypocrisy that their faces are sick with fear and afraid of death. It would have been better for them to be obedient when the decision to fight had been made. You might go on to spread corruption and break your ties of kinship. Those who are cursed by God are made blind and deaf. Are there locks on their hearts, is that why they do not ponder the words of the Quran? Those who turned back to disbelief after guidance were enticed and then duped by Satan. They say they will believe in some matters, but God knows all about their schemes. When the angels take them in death they will strike their faces and their backs because they followed things that incurred God’s wrath and 17

they disliked pleasing God. He made their deeds worthless. Verses 29 – 38 God is free of all needs Do those whose hearts are diseased think God will not reveal their malice? If God so desired He could mark them so you could tell clearly who they are, but you should be able to discern them from their speech. God knows everything you do, and you will be put to the test until He makes evident those amongst you who strive for God’s cause and the patient ones. Indeed, those who disbelieved and turned people away from the path of God, and who disputed with Prophet Muhammad, even after the guidance had been made clear to them cannot harm God in any way. And their deeds will become worthless. Oh believers! Obey God and Prophet Muhammad and do not let your deeds be invalidated. God will not forgive those who disbelieve (and die as disbelievers) and obstruct others on their journey to the truth. Do not weaken while you have the upper hand. God is with you and will never deprive you of your good deeds. The life of this world is trivial as compared to the Hereafter. Believe and fear God and He will give you your rewards, never asking you to give up all your possessions. If He were to demand all your possessions, you would want to withhold them, exposing your unwillingness. Now He asks but a little of you but still some of you are unwilling. Those who begrudge what God asks only harm themselves because God is 18

free of all needs; you are the ones who are needy. If you refuse and turn away God will replace you with people who do not act like you.

La Traducción de Surah 47 Muhammad (Profeta Muhammad SAW) 1. 13. Y muchas ciudades, más fuertes que tu ciudad (Meca) (O Muhammad ), que te ha echado fuera. Y no había nadie que los ayudara. 14. ¿Es él que está en una prueba clara de su Señor, como aquellos por quienes sus malas obras que hacen son embellecidas por ellos, mientras siguen sus propias concupiscencias (malos deseos)? 15. La descripción del Paraíso que se les ha prometido a los Muttaqun (piadosos - véase V.2:2) es que en él hay ríos de agua cuyo sabor y olor no se cambian; ríos de leche cuyo sabor nunca cambia; ríos de vino deliciosos para los que beben; y ríos de miel clarificada (clara y pura) para ellos es toda clase de frutos; y el perdón de su Señor. Así son los hombres cuyos corazones ha sellado Alá, y que siguen sus deseos (malos deseos). 17. Mientras que en cuanto a los que aceptan la guía, Él aumenta su guía, y les otorga su piedad. 18. ¿Esperan entonces otra cosa que no sea la Hora, para que les venga de repente? Pero algunos de sus presagios (indicaciones y signos) ya han llegado, y cuando (en realidad) está en ellos, ¿cómo pueden beneficiarse entonces con su recordatorio? 23

19. Por lo tanto, sepan (O Muhammad ) que La ilaha ila-Allah (nadie tiene el derecho de ser adorado sino Alá), y pidan perdón por sus pecados, y también por (el pecado de) los hombres y mujeres creyentes. Y Alá conoce bien vuestros movimientos y vuestro lugar de descanso (en vuestras casas). 20. Los que creen dicen: "¿Por qué no se envía una Surah (capítulo del Corán)? Pero cuando una Sura decisiva (explicando y ordenando las cosas) es enviada, y la lucha (Jihad - lucha santa en la Causa de Alá) es mencionada (es decir, ordenada) en ella, verás a aquellos en cuyo corazón hay una enfermedad (de hipocresía) mirándote con una mirada de desmayo hasta la muerte. Pero era mejor para ellos (hipócritas, escuchar a Alá y obedecerle). 21. La obediencia (a Alá) y las buenas palabras (eran mejores para ellos). Y cuando el asunto (la preparación para la Jihad) esté resuelto, entonces si hubieran sido fieles a Alá, habría sido mejor para ellos. 22. Entonces, si se le diera la autoridad, ¿haría travesuras en la tierra y cortaría sus lazos de parentesco? 23. Así son aquellos a los que Alah ha maldecido, de modo que los ha dejado sordos y ciegos de vista. 24. ¿Acaso no piensan profundamente en el Corán, o sus corazones están cerrados (para que no lo entiendan)? 24

25. Verdaderamente, aquellos que han regresado (han apostatado) como incrédulos después de que la guía les ha sido manifestada, Shaitan (Satanás) ha embellecido para ellos (sus falsas esperanzas), y (Alá) ha prolongado su término (edad). 26. Dios está contigo y nunca te privará de tus buenas obras. La vida de este mundo es trivial en comparación con el Más Allá. Cree y teme a Dios y Él te dará tus recompensas, nunca te pedirá que renuncies a todas tus posesiones. Si Él exigiera todas sus posesiones, usted querría retenerlas, exponiendo su falta de voluntad. Ahora les pide un poco, pero algunos de ustedes no están dispuestos a hacerlo. Los que envidian lo que Dios pide sólo se dañan a sí 32
