AN INVITATION TO

LAUREATES, CHAIRMAN CIRCLE MEMBERS, GOVERNORS AND SPONSORS

WELCOME Last year marked the 25th anniversary of the Nova Scotia Business Hall of Fame. We celebrated this milestone with record attendance at the gala, and record donations raised for youth in Nova Scotia. As a JA ambassador, you play a significant role in sustaining the important work of JA Nova Scotia. In addition to attending last year’s event, many of you made additional personal pledges of support which made it possible for JA to overcome an extremely difficult year. Because of your involvement and long-term commitment, JA’s mission of inspiring and preparing youth to succeed in the global economy is made possible. Thank you for your ongoing generosity. The Nova Scotia Business Hall of Fame serves to inspire the next generation of leaders and entrepreneurs. Each year, laureates are inducted whose lifetime achievements provide an example to young entrepreneurs and business leaders of tomorrow of what is possible with determination, hard work, and effective leadership. Our laureates hail from all corners of industry. Some are entrepreneurs who have built a business from the ground up. Some are intrapreneurs who have innovated a business from within. And some are the next generation leaders of family business, who have grown a business beyond its original potential. Each have demonstrated superior leadership values, vision and have a legacy of success to celebrate. This booklet is an overview of the opportunities to engage with the Nova Scotia Business Hall of Fame program and JA Nova Scotia for 2017-2018. However you wish to participate, we welcome your involvement and patronage. Sincerely,

Colin MacDonald Chair, Board of Governors 2015 Laureate

Mark Parkhill Chair, Board of Directors JA of Nova Scotia

ABOUT THE BUSINESS HALL OF FAME The Business Hall of Fame was initiated in 1993 to recognize the contribution made to business by successful leaders and entrepreneurs. The Business Hall of Fame is an institution of unmatched significance to the business community of Nova Scotia. Each year, Junior Achievement of Nova Scotia and the Business Hall of Fame honour individuals who inspire our business community and future business leaders with a record of unparalleled lifetime achievement. Laureates exemplify growth, courage, success and leadership. Last year the Hall celebrated its 25th anniversary with an audience of over 1,000 guests. Since 1993, 89 laureates have been inducted.

ABOUT

JA NOVA SCOTIA

JA Nova Scotia A Member of JA Canada

The Nova Scotia Business Hall of Fame is a critical fundraiser in support of the annual operations of Junior Achievement of Nova Scotia. JA is a registered charity with a mission to inspire and prepare youth to succeed in the global economy. JA Nova Scotia provides hands-on experiential learning in the classroom and through extra-curricular activities. Programs focus on three educational pillars: financial literacy, workplace readiness, and entrepreneurship. Junior Achievement recruits volunteers from the business community to collaborate on the delivery of programs, which exposes students to real world business perspectives and ideas. JA is helping to produce more financially literate graduates, with accelerated career paths and increased leadership potential. We celebrate entrepreneurship and we help students develop business skills. In fact, Achievers, are more likely to be managers than their peers, twice as likely to study and work in business and finance, and are 50% more likely to own their own business! Our work is directly linked to building workforce capacity and a strong and prosperous economy.

ALICE SONG JA NOVA SCOTIA ACHIEVER

Whenever people ask what is JA, I often reply with “JA is an organization providing a platform for our little companies to spring to our feet and get the first taste of what running a business is really like.” I love JA, not only for its mentorship during the company program, but also for its seemingly boundless opportunities to grow, network, and learn. Junior Achievement is just amazing.

JA NOVA SCOTIA IS CELEBRATING 50 YEARS! A LOOK BACK In May 2018, JA turns 50! To celebrate, we are looking back and looking forward. In looking back, we will be sharing stories and pictures, and showcasing all that JA has accomplished for youth in Nova Scotia with the support of our amazing volunteers, investors and partners. In recent years, JA Nova Scotia has: •

Become the fastest growing charter in Canada

Tripled program offerings

Expanded core delivery (from grades 6-12 to ages 3-25)

Developed and launched collaborative programming for at-risk and marginalized youth

Launched “in community” program delivery (outside the classroom)

Launched incubators for student company ventures (nested inside sponsor companies)

Since May 1969, JA Nova Scotia has helped over 300,000 young people province-wide!

JA NOVA SCOTIA IS TRANSFORMING LIVES A LOOK AHEAD In 2016-2017, and for the first time in our history, we raised over $1M in support of youth in the province. Last year, 13,333 students, ages 3-25, committed 75,057 hours to learning about financial literacy, workplace readiness and entrepreneurship. Province-wide, JA delivered 601 JA programs and engaged 747 volunteers from the business community who committed 11,481 hours to mentoring youth. In looking ahead, our Legacy Project officially launches this year, which involves the new home of our laureate portraits and the Nova Scotia Business Hall of Fame. We will also be introducing an incredible new program called World of Choices. World of Choices is an innovative and interactive career forum for students, which fuses mentorship and career exploration with a broader labour attachement strategy. At JA, our priority is youth and their future. Our focus will continue to include labour attachment, vocational training, workforce capacity building and poverty prevention and alleviation. We believe that every young person deserves a bright and promising future. With your help, we are transforming lives! 2017-2018 Goals: 2017-2018

Programs 750

Students 16-18,000

Volunteers 900-1,000

Funding $1,033,700

CHAIRMAN CIRCLE

JA is committed to honouring business leaders that help provide youth with the skills they need to prepare for the workforce, create and manage wealth, and pursue their dreams. The Chairman Circle is a group of individuals who firmly believe that JA enhances the lives of young people, strengthens our economy and produces solid, ethical citizens. The Chairman Circle was launched 2 years ago in an effort to raise much needed annual funding to support core programming and growth initiatives for JA. Governors were asked to make a $5,000 financial pledge which included their governorship as well as a personal contribution to support JA programs in financial literacy, workplace readiness and entrepreneurship.
