A Letter from the Executive Director Upper Lafayette’s first newsletter was published in November 2008. Following a very simple and abbreviated format, the intention behind the publication was to increase public awareness of Upper Lafayette Economic Development Foundation, market our members’ businesses, and take on a more professional look for a young and fledging non-profit organization operating on a shoestring. Fast forward to September 2017, and Upper Lafayette celebrates the publication of its 105th issue! Over time, we have learned a bit about presenting a more polished look, and today’s newsletter is skillfully designed by our very talented graphic design artist, Emily Carline. I share all this with you to also share the news that this will be my last letter written to you as Executive Director of Upper Lafayette. Bradley Black will be assuming the duties of Executive Director in September, and we will proudly introduce her at Upper Lafayette’s September 20 th luncheon at Oakbourne Country Club. Bradley brings a deep love for our community and is ready to roll up her sleeves to dive into her leadership role here. She is eager to meet all of you and hear your thoughts and ideas about Upper Lafayette and how to best position the organization to be an effective community voice and catalyst for positive change. Pastor Ken’s Destiny of Faith $9 million new chapel and campus are under construction at 409 Patterson Street, and will complement the new upscale homes built under the wing of Pastor Ken in his effort to revitalize the corridor surrounding Martin Luther King. Pastor Jay and his church have taken on the responsibility of managing and upgrading Moore Park Baseball fields, as well as undertaking the expansion of Lafayette Christian Academy’s footprint.

Bradley Black to Serve as Upper Lafayette Executive Director

Upper Lafayette’s board of directors is proud to announce the hiring of Bradley Black as its Executive Director. Bradley was born and raised in Lafayette, Louisiana. She attended Reed College in Portland, Oregon and after briefly working in international policy, she received her J.D. from Loyola University College of Law in New Orleans, Louisiana. Following graduation in 2005, she led Loyola’s “Katrina Clinic,” spearheading efforts in storm recovery. In 2008 she returned to Lafayette, entering private practice and in 2010, was named volunteer attorney of the year by the Lafayette Bar Association. She served with

TRAIL for Louisiana and on the Board of Directors for Downtown Lafayette Unlimited, and currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Southern Screen Film Festival and Festival Internationale de Louisiana. She is also an adjunct professor in University of Louisiana’s Departments of Music and Business. Bradley will be officially introduced to our members at Upper Lafayette’s September 20 th luncheon at Oakbourne Countr y Club. Help to Get our Young Learners “On Track by 5!”

What if you could decide exactly how your business’ tax dollars were spent? Well, through Louisiana’s innovative School Readiness Tax Credits program, you can do just that! Most businesses qualify for this program that sounds too good to be true, but isn’t. The latest research clearly shows that the great majority of brain development occurs during the first few years of a child’s life, and that getting a young person properly prepared for kindergarten can be essential to his or her educational success. If you’d like to contribute up to $5,000.00 per year to local efforts to improve early learning centers, you can receive a dollar-for-dollar tax credit from the state. That means that the full amount you contribute by December of each year will go to support efforts to raise standards in early learning centers while also meeting your business’ annual state tax liability. That’s right, you can pay your taxes and support On Track by 5 at the same time. And if you don’t have a state tax liability, your contribution will be fully refunded to you by the state while our local school readiness program gets to keep and utilize your contribution. You can even potentially claim a federal income tax deduction equal to the amount of your contribution! The monies you contribute will be used to help raise standards at the nearly 40 publicly-funded early childhood centers currently serving approximately 2,800 young learners across Lafayette Parish. The state is raising standards for these centers and their lead teachers, and you can direct your tax payments to efforts to assist them with obtaining curricula as well as teacher certifications designed to increase centers’ quality ratings as well as teachers’ earning potential.

2017 Bayou Vermilion Preservation Association Symposium

Clean and safe water, as well as watershed management is of utmost importance to us here in Acadiana. With the recent flooding and havoc wreaked by the August 2016 flood and Hurricane Harvey, there will never be a better time to learn more about the Vermilion River and how it impacts our region. The Bayou Vermilion Preservation Association (“BVPA”) is hosting its fourth annual River Symposium on September 8, 2017, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Vermilionville. This year’s theme is centered on working collaboratively, within our larger community, to make a regional effort toward water management, water quality, and quality of life. The cost is $27.00, or $5.00 for students. Register online at bayouvermilionpreservation.org. There will be a reception at Ruffino’s at 7:00 p.m. that is free for all BVPA members and Symposium attendees. BVPA will also be holding a Sunset River Cruise on the Vermilion on September 8 th. Boats will depart from Beaver Park at 5:00 p.m. and cruise toward Ruffino’s on the River. The cost for the cruise is $27.00.

LGMC Receives the 2017 Women’s Choice Award® as One of America’s Best Hospitals for Orthopedics

Lafayette General Medical Center (LGMC) has been named one of America’s Best Hospitals for Orthopedics by Women’s Choice Award®. LGMC is one of 374 award recipients representing hospitals with comprehensive orthopedic programs that meet certain customer survey scores and wellness criteria. “We continue to work diligently to remain the leader for Orthopedics in the region,” says Patrick W. Gandy, Jr., CEO of LGMC. “Pairing state-of-the-art technology such as Mako™ robotic assisted surgery, with the region’s top surgeons has brought Orthopedics at LGMC to an elite level.” To identify winners, Women Certified evaluates Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey results along with primary research about women’s healthcare preferences. Award recipients are also measured on their incidence of surgical complications and infections, including: • A wound that splits open after surgery • Accidental cuts and tears • Deaths from serious treatable complications • Rate of complications for knee or hip replacement patients • Catheter associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) • Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureu (MRSA) infections

A hospital must have arthroscopy, joint replacement and spine surgery orthopedic services available to patients, onsite physical therapy, and an MRI in order to qualify for the award. It is the only award recognizing excellence in orthopedics based on robust criteria that consider patient satisfaction and clinical excellence. In a national survey conducted by Women’s Choice Award, female orthopedic patients identified the following key priorities when choosing a hospital for orthopedics: • Single source for orthopedic services • Solid patient safety record • High recommendation ratings “Women have different orthopedics needs, particularly as they grow older and become more at risk for osteoporosis and fractures,” said Delia Passi, founder and CEO of Women’s Choice Award. “They also have different healthcare preferences, which we use to evaluate the recipients of America’s Best Hospitals for Orthopedics. Carencro Middle School’s Biomedical Academy Offers Dynamic Program By Shannon Thomas, Director Biomedical. What does that word mean? Ask any of the students in the Biomedical Academy at Carencro Middle School and find out!

And if you ever meet one of our Academy students, ask them what the word Biomedical means, and prepared to be schooled.

The Biomedical Academy opened its doors to students in August of 2011. This program is one of many offered through Schools of Choice in Lafayette Parish. The program provides a unique learning experience to students in grades 6-8. The Biomedical Academy prides itself on delivering a structured interactive curriculum that incorporates many learning styles and techniques. Sixth graders are introduced to Health Careers and Microbiology. Growing bacteria is just one of the many labs that they complete. Seventh graders focus on Genetics. They will complete a lab where they extract DNA from strawberries. Eighth graders cover Human Anatomy. They complete several different dissections, one being the dissection of a fetal pig. All of this is done in an attempt to prepare our students for the competitive world in healthcare. Since its opening, the Biomedical Academy has experienced considerable success. We have increased our enrollment numbers, we have won Middle School Student of the Year for three consecutive years, and we have formed partnerships with Our Lady of Lourdes, South Louisiana Community College and University of Louisiana at Lafayette. The Academy has proven to be a driving force in helping their students be better prepared for high school and the challenges that it brings. Students of the Biomedical Academy have had the privilege of seeing many professionals from the community come in and share their journey, information about their occupation, and what steps the students need to take to get to their level. Scientists, university professors, pharmacists, dietitians, nurses, paramedics and more have visited to share their experiences and expertise, all in an effort to expose the next generation to the possibilities awaiting them. The Academy is a direct pathway to several Schools of Choice high school programs. The students within the Academy can choose to continue their current track and join the Lafayette High Health Academy, Northside High Health Academy, or the David Thibodaux Stem Magnet Biomedical Academy. The Biomedical Academy at Carencro Middle is just one outstanding thing happening in Upper Lafayette. The students are stepping up to the challenge.

First Annual Carencro Fall Fun Run to Raise Funds for Area Schools

The first annual Carencro Fall Fun Run, powered by Lavoro, is a community event running through the heart of downtown Carencro. This event will help raise funds for schools in the area.

to finish up running toward the St. Peters Church. The event will finish with an awards ceremony at 10:00 a.m., food, drinks, and entertainment.

The race will take place on Saturday, October 14. Race day registration is from 7:00 – 7:45 a.m. The Kids Sprint race ($5 admission) will start at 8:00 a.m. with Mayor Brasseaux as the official Race Starter. This race will feature the kids in attendance, and be on a smaller footprint within the downtown area. All children involved will receive a certificate.

Home Bank To Acquire St. Martin Bank & Trust The parent company of Lafayette-based Home Bank will acquire the parent of St. Martinville-based St. Martin Bank & Trust Co. in a stock-and-cash deal valued at $96.1 million. Under the deal, St. Martin Bancshares will become part of Home Bancorp Inc. St. Martin Bank has 12 branches in Acadia, Jefferson Davis, Lafayette and St. Martin parishes. As of June 30, St. Martin Bancshares had assets of $597.3 million, $455.5 million in loans and $508.7 million in deposits. Home Bank has 28 branches in the Lafayette, Baton Rouge, New Orleans and north shore areas in Louisiana, and in the Natchez and Vicksburg regions of Mississippi. The combined company will have assets of about $2.2 billion, $1.7 billion in loans and $1.8 billion in deposits, making it the third-largest Louisiana-based bank. “This merger is a win-win for both St. Martin Bank and Home Bank customers, as each will enjoy more locations and enhanced products to serve them,” Home Bancorp President and Chief Executive Officer John W. Bordelon said. The deal is also “a significant momentum builder” for Home

Bank shareholders, and will add more than 20 percent to earnings per share as a result of cost savings, Bordelon said. The deal marks the fifth Louisiana bank to be acquired in 2017. The parent company of Investar Bank has acquired two banks this year: The Highlands Bank, based in Jackson, and Citizens Bank of Ville Platte. Iberville Bank in Plaquemine was acquired by The First Bancshares Inc., based in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Whitney Bank acquired the assets of failed First NBC in New Orleans. Sherwood “Woody” Briggs, vice chairman of Chaffe & Associates, a New Orleans investment banking adviser, said he expects the trend will continue. Home Bancorp also expects the deal will add to its book value per share within 42 months of closing, which should be sometime in the fourth quarter or the first quarter of 2018. Home Bancorp will exchange 9.3 shares of its stock and $94 for every share of St. Martin Bancshares. The acquisition will require Home Bank to issue 1.9 million new shares.

Mercredi Show Lineup Promises Free Fun for All! The popular Mercredi Show begins its 2017 fall session on September 6th at Carencro’s Pelican Park. This free, family-friendly outdoor concert series is scheduled from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. every Wednesday through October 18th. The concert series showcasing popular local bands is also held in the spring of each year. The Mercredi Show concept is an outgrowth of a similar event in Dieppe, Canada, Carencro’s sister city. Roundabout Planned for North University Avenue By Rob Macko, KLFY TV10 North University Avenue just north of Interstate 10 can get pretty busy. That’s especially true in the mornings and afternoons when parents are dropping off and picking up their kids from Lafayette Christian Academy. The Metropolitan Planning Organization said changes are coming to North University from I-10 to Stone Avenue to help alleviate the problem. One of the changes included in the $3.6 million project is connecting Renaud Drive and Stone Avenue with a roundabout. The work won’t begin until 2020. Once crews break ground, it should take about 18 months to complete.

The Metropolitan Planning Organization says it should make the road safer. “They’re going to realign Renaud and Stone Avenue into a roundabout configuration because there’s a lot of crashes at Renaud and there’s a lot of crashes at Stone,” said Ashley Moran, a planner with the MPO. Lewis said residents and business owners have been asking for improvements. The road upgrades should also make it easier for drivers to get into businesses.

The goal is to make North University Avenue a four-lane road from I-10 to Pont des Mouton Road, but that’s still a long way off.

“The traffic is the problem, and we want relief on this end of town,” Lewis said. “They want relief; the residents want relief. The school wants relief. The businesses want relief, and I want to see that they get relief.”

Lafayette Consolidated Government District 3 Councilman Pat Lewis said the improvements are needed.

North University is also used by many who commute from Carencro to Lafayette and by those who use Moore Park.

“We’ve been waiting for something for many, many years, and it’s finally coming to District 3,” he said. “I’m excited about it.”

The Lafayette Consolidated Government has completed feasibility and environmental studies.

Upper Lafayette Welcomes Abbie Judice of LEDA to On the Move!

As a Project Associate for Sustainable Community, Abbie Judice focuses on transforming Lafayette into “an economically, environmentally, and socially healthy and resilient” community. She oversees LEDA’s involvement in various civic, governmental, and business organizations to form integrated solutions with shareholders in the community. Abbie also monitors emerging trends, programs and related issues regarding a sustainable community— including quality of life, retention and attraction of workforce talent, and community pride. Abbie is a graduate of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette with a bachelor’s degree in Organizational Communication with a concentration in Business. Upon graduation, she assisted in managing a successful mayoral campaign in Lafayette Parish. Abbie has been

employed at LEDA for one year in the newly-created sustainability role. At LEDA, Abbie has completed extensive research on peer cities and their workforce attraction and green community practices. She currently serves on the executive board of the Acadiana Food Alliance and the advisory board of Scenic Lafayette. Abbie also acts as LEDA’s liaison to One Acadiana’s Urban Revitalization, Public Education, and Transportation Infrastructure committees; the Lafayette Central Park, Inc. board; the Mayor-President’s Project Front Yard initiative; and other related special projects. Upper Lafayette is proud to partner with LEDA and Abbie Judice in their efforts to work for a more sustainable community here in Lafayette Parish. Engaged Employees Are Loyal Employees An engaged employee will rarely call out of work and will perform well on performance reviews. If there is ever a change in the workplace, an engaged employee will likely be on board with any changes and remain supportive of company decisions.

How To Get Your Employees More Engaged Employee engagement can result in more productivity, higher profits and lower employee turnover. So, how can you start your employee engagement program? Here are two ways to start your approach: 1. Say Thank You To Your Employees. If your employees are meeting your expectations, a simple “thank you” goes a long way. Employees put in extra time and effort to maintain productivity and acknowledging their productivity will increase their level of engagement. Recognizing extra efforts will keep your employees loyal and productive. 2. Give Your Employees More Recognition. Once you have created an incentive for an employee to perform better by motivating them, give managers and team leaders a way to recognize effort that goes above and beyond what is required. This will let an employee know that he or she is doing a good job and their extra effort is being rewarded. Employees that are motivated will always work towards the company’s success. If they feel valued, they will be engaged in the work they are putting in. Employee engagement is established by acknowledging employee effort and rewarding it as a result. Remember that both engaged and disengaged employees can have a huge financial impact on the company. It is key to have all your employees engaged to maximize business productivity.
