SIMPLE LIVING The living and activity center for old people, Nanjing, China Academic Work 2013

SIMPLE LIVING The living and activity center for old people Academic Work September- November 2013 Tutor : Xia Bing

Located in a middle of a busy downtown of Nanjing, the main challenge is to provide a community center that will support the community needs mostly for the elderly. To keep what has been there for many years and create the new ideas should be combined well. As the result, transparency is well blend with the surrounding creating a social unity, usage of different colors meant to help the elderly to easily recognize their room and traffic.

The community and lifestyle of old people can not be separated with the middle aged, teenagers and also kids. This is a very important aspect in the design. Separate the community lifestyle with the private living space can be seen in the plan level, the ground floor is opened for public and the first floor are only for the private user. The elderly is not a group of people that is disable or non energetic, in fact they do a lot of activities and most of their day time will be spent by exercising. At last, living space which must be quite and comfortable will be combined with activity space which is public and energetic. 003

GENIUS LOCI Refurbishment and expansion of Student canteen and activity center, Nanjing, China. Academic Work 2013

GENIUS LOCI Refurbishment and expansion of Student canteen and activity center Academic Work February-April 2014 Tutor : Zhou Lin

The Sha Tang Yuan canteen is one of the most historical building in Southeast University. It is designed by Master Yang, the pioneer of architecture department in the school. As it is shown at the right picture, the original plan and elevation, symmetrical design of a massive concrete block shows a very thick chinese style building since it was built in 1952 while the wing on the east side is added some years later.

The building is surrounded by an old community and residential area, the whole new community of Sha Tang Yuan area has been totally opened to public by the architect, where before it was surrounded by a wall. The main focus is to preserved the old pattern of the whole area which is really strong and create the new public space from the pattern, while the new building will later connect all the public space on the level above. The architect wants to make a very distinctive differences between the old building and the new building which is applied in the space organization, building material and also building structure. 015

016

Site study

Site importance and study model

There are two buildings which can not be demolished, it is the main canteen and the historical building at the southwest of the main canteen.

At the north, there is a main gate of the campus, at the southwest there is the historical building and at the south area of the site, there are series of old trees which must be preserved.

Size difference There are three main size of buildings from the original area, the biggest one which is the canteen, middle one which is the historical building and the smallest one are the others which create the city pattern.

Rearrange the block After finding the essential size, the architect started to organize it, the placement of each box will create a pattern like a city block which will create several public open spaces in the important areas.

The new layer Adding the new building with the modern style on the top of the first layer which will connect several public spaces.

Adjust and connect Several angle are readjusted, to emphasize the grid and important axis.

Function analysis Because of the pattern that is created in the ground floor, the function of the building must be separated well in order to make people comfortable walking and working in the area.

HOUSE WITH THE HOLE A private house for a single family, Meihuayuan, Nanjing, China Academic work 2012

HOUSE WITH THE HOLE A private house for a single family Academic Work September- November 2012 Tutor : Dong Ling

This single family house is located in a very dense old area of Nanjing called Mei Hua Yuan. The only faรงade that can be seen and accessible is at the north, which is the total opposite of chinese Feng Shui, so it is a challenge for the architect to deal with the natural sunlight and natural ventilation. Privacy and comfort is the main concern in this project, because Nanjing is very cold during the winter and very hot during the summer, also the relation between the indoor spaces and courtyards is crucial. To deal with it, the architect design a simple plain shape, adjusting the neighborhood, to admit sunlight inside the house some openings were created at the south faรงade and on the roof. The east and west faรงade left plain empty to provide a secure and privacy for the client, and blocking the excessive heat during summer. The north faรงade which is the only faรงade that is noticeable shows people the concept of the house, with a tree surrounded by a glass box on the upper level. 027

028

The section analysis shows us the connection between indoor spaces and courtyards, where people can interact each other inside the house and also enjoy the courtyard from every points of the house.

Create a similar shape as the surrounding buildings.

029

The shaded area shows us the space where there is more empty space along the horizontal line, can be used as an openings.

Create a middle courtyard which connects the front and back part, design only one faรงade (north) that is noticeable.

Open a big hole above the courtyard to admit more sunlight, rain water and also provide a privacy by avoiding windows on the faรงade.

030

Simple shape with a gable roof to make it ‘friendly’ with the surrounding area and provide a good air ventilation.

Put the courtyard in the middle, so it can be seen from either front or back part of the house.

Adding more courtyard at the front, to be a façade and shows the concept of the house, which can be used as a front outdoor entrance.

Create some more openings to admit rain water to the courtyard, sunlight and also natural ventilation.

Adding more windows at the south façade providing more sunlight, but in order to keep the privacy, the windows are kept small in size. The lighting sketch from the architect shows us how the sunlight comes inside the house, some may have direct sunlight, some may have a reflected light that is reflected by the glass surrounding the courtyard. 031

WONDERLAND The children museum of nature Nanjing, China Academic work 2014

WONDERLAND The children museum of nature Academic work November-January 2014 Tutor : Zhou Lin Museum is talking about preserving something old or something that has been in this world for a long time, while children is talking about something new, young generation. This contradiction somehow wanted to be applied in the design by the architect, where the site is in an old city of Nanjing, and the building is the free form architecture style, the double sided curve fiberglass meets the old brick city wall of Ming dynasty emphasize this definition successfully.

PIPA LAKE

To have a mind like a child is the way the architect build the concept. Simply adapting the form from a toy that children will definitely like, learn how toy can attract them, learn the principle and apply it in the design. Pipa Lake is the site which is also an important point that the architect should pay attention to, placed in a scenic area of Purple Mountain, and also surrounded by several important point such as Xuanwu Lake, Ji Ming Temple, Ming Tomb and also the mausoleum of Sun Yat Sen. Following the sloping site and avoid cutting trees is the way to keep it nature friendly.

038

BEAUTIFUL NATURE

+1.200m FLOOR PLAN

In the Southeast, the site is facing a lake , surrounded and also occupied by a lot of trees and in the northwest is the Ming dynasty old city wall.

AVOIDING TREES As we can see that the site has many trees, we want to create a nature friendly design by keeping all the trees moreover, since the topic is also a nature museum, it will be a pity if we cut the trees, isn’t it?

CONTINUOUS BUILDING The continue space will allow the children to run and play around in a track and easily lead them from one room to another.

SOFTEN EDGES An angle seems too sharp with the nature, curved edges making it more like a flow of nature

OUTER SKIN Material : Rusted metal panel The hole Act as a windows. They admit daylight into the interior and, when the sun shines, project the silhouettes of the holes on the floor levels. After dark and at night, the holes are illuminated from behind by the lighting inside. Material choosing is to break the stiffness of the concrete.

OUTER BOX Material : Concrete Provide a structure of the cylinders and also create an interesting space for users.

THREE CYLINDERS Material : glass Each cylinders provide a different functions and also clear view to almost every corner of the building.

MODELING The result of the study from children toys finally applied in the form, taking it from the wooden train set continuous track, diversity of height, and also two middle open spaces. And the model making is also taken from ‘Play Doh’ a children clay modeling tool, it allows RAMP the architect to easily ‘play’ with the façade and surfaces, until it came out with the final formMaterial which is: metal shown at the picture on the right. Provide a continuous and various space eachprocess corner ofofthe building, and also To be able to understand what kind of building will the children enjoy, frominthe for people getting the concept, space designing, structural designing, façade designing, theaccess modeling, untilto go to each room the furniture designing, the architect chooses to do it ‘playfully’

THEATER

ENTRANCE

PARKING LOT

The theater in one side is left opened allowing kids and parents to sit as a resting area while it is not used.

The entrance is going underground to attract kids what is under the building and they can see through the glass above, the activity inside which will attract them more to go inside.

From the parking lot, we can see obviously the contrast between the old wall with the new building, trying to make people understand the idea from the start.

PLAYING ROOM

INTERACTIVE ROOM

FOYER

The playing room is in between the courtyard and also terrace to outside, from here, kids can go to the garden to plant some trees or go outdoor to play at the lakeside.

The window on both side of the room allow kids to see people who is coming down and they can run to the other side to see when that people finally go inside the museum, making it a playful area.

The three arched door is applied from the wooden train set idea, on the other side the lower door also provides a special entrance for kids to make them feel more like we create the building indeed for them.

IN CASEMENT A dormitory for exchange students in SiPaiLou Campus, SiPaiLou, Nanjing, China Academic work 2013

IN CASEMENT A dormitory for exchange students in Sipailou campus Academic work February-April 2013 Tutor : Dong Ling Concrete, Glass, and water are combined to create this building, it was chosen to provide a peace and comfortable living space for the users. The project was begin with the unit design, as a component that will construct the whole building. The main idea of the architect is to create the simple living style as this is a student residential, where they only spend most of their time at school, their living space suppose to balance their busy life. Combining those three materials to accomplish the aim of the architect, turn out to be an interesting result. Concrete is the main structure, wall and slabs where the glass were combined between the U-shaped translucent tinted glass and transparent glass which create a beautiful façade of the building, where on the other hand it blends peacefully with the shallow gravel pond in between the four main blocks. The sketch on the right shows us the idea of ‘changing façade’ when people walk inside, the translucent glass will hide them, besides the transparent glass will expose them. 049

050

View from the SiPailou street through the back entrance. It is easily noticeable but somehow it keeps the privacy for the people living inside.

The basic idea was adopted from the important building nearby, it is the school canteen. Create a middle void and surrounded by the living space. View from SiPaiLou street to the main entrance, the large opening from the concrete wall guide people easily to the main entrance.

Divide the living space into four to create a horizontal rectangular shape parallel with the environment.

Create a public space in the middle, and shift the living area to admit sunlight and green space. 051

The main idea of rotating the wall is to create a ‘share environment’ with the neighbourhood. A concrete wall create a sense of defense and secure, water and green space soften it and provide a comfortable feeling for both living and public users.

View from the public space surrounded by chinese student dormitory and school canteen. By the angle that is created from the wall rotation, it reduce the defensive sense of the concrete fence. 052

Placing all the room to the south and leave the corridor at the north part allowing maximum sunlight to the bedrooms. Each block of the building has a different height due to the sunlight analysis. The shortest one placed at the most south east where the tallest one placed at the most north west, so the shadow of each block will not affect the sunlight of the other block

The unit design came from a small box, which contain one person only, expand it into four to create one block of the building. Shift the boxes to the left and right to create an additional space. For the double room, back to the simple concept, the architect tried to maintain it the same as the single, so, by adding another single room as the second floor and minus the height, it creates a double room unit. The developing steps are the same with the single room unit design. The sketch under, shows us the combination of single and double room for each block, where it will still can grow up and also be developed into another variation.

INTERIOR DESIGN Design a building is not always about aesthetic or functional or structural, it is more for the comfort of the users. What people feel about the building is defined more from the interior design, that is why I think architecture can not be separated from interior design. I have involved in several projects and some of them are already finished, from this professional work, I can learn a lot from designing the furniture until learning the detail technical work. Base on these experience I believe it helps me understand more about architecture.

PHOTOGRAPHY For me, photography is about capturing the moment to let people see what their eyes can not capture. Architecture has always been interesting as the object, it combined with nature, with people life and also speak as itself. I use both professional camera and pocket camera, the reason is to get me familiar with all kind of devices to take pictures. The pictures that I showed are some examples from Nanjing, Beijing and Bali.

073

074

PHOTOGRAPHY I am always a big fan of black and white images, the idea of turning an image into black and white besides the technical aspect is because sometimes we are blinded by colors, and we don’t realize the essential part in our picture, so by turning it to black and white I wish that I can dig the image more and let people be aroused by it.

075

076

FINE ARTS AND GRAPHIC DESIGN Art is my life. Since I was young I found myself have a deep interest in it. I draw in any kind of media or material and for different purposes. As I grow up, I joined and won a lot of drawing or painting competition and also started to designed several posters and logos. Base on this habit I started to have interest in architecture, and as I am learning it now I think my art background support my architecture life a lot and I enjoyed my time working in this both world. As we know some architects are also an artists, in my opinion it is a perfect match when we combine art and architecture.
