Ruincarnation looks to the UK’s rust belt as a new avenue for cohabitation and explores key challenges that come when dealing with historical sites subject to dereliction. What are the processes necessary to transform these sites in order to revive the industrial roots and forgotten communities that ground them? How should we respond to material decay in order to highlight issues of finiteness and celebrate historical value whilst developing sustainable systems for development?

ACADEMIC

THE PROJECT Informed by studies of morphosis & deconstructivism, The Reconstructivist City is home to an autonomous society taking back their right to the city through the formation of a new urban typology. Using the formal principals of retro-kit, a designed system for urban rehabilitation, this new typology latches onto the existing urban fabric and transforms it from within to provide the future neighbourhoods of the city.

THE PROJECT The final design project within my undergraduate studies was a creative hub based in central London. Established along the border between Hackney and Islington, once recognised as the artist commune of the capital, now subject to significant gentrification. Threshold reinstates the artist community, providing spaces for young creatives to live, work and teach. Finetuned spaces create opportunities to make and exhibit across multiple disciplines whilst cohabitating under the same roof.

PROFESSIONAL

THE PROJECT Dudley Gardens involved the demolition of a derelict terrace house and subsequent rebuild of a contemporary replacement with notable reference to the character of the existing. The site constraints presented several unique challenges, fronting a single footpath and backing onto the Cherwell River, requiring a number of comprehensive studies regarding access and ecological concerns. Dudley Gardens has provided me with an extensive understanding of each stage of procurement from the initial site survey to the final working drawings.

PROFESSIONAL

THE PROJECT Fisher Row was a contemporary response to an existing Victorian townhouse. Working from materials and elements of the dwelling, the brief required a rear extension and renovation to the existing structure. Fisher Row was one example of a project involving works to a listed or historically significant structure. This is an area which greatly interests me and inspired much of my academic studies.

PROFESSIONAL

THE PROJECT Essex Street is a small row of terrace houses capped by a block of flats, providing a modest contemporary twist on the local Victorian vernacular. During my time on the project, I worked closely with the lead architect through multiple design iterations and planning appeals. I conducted a number of studies in order to rationalise the form and design in relation to the local context of the street and surrounding area.

THE PROJECT The Patmore Estate, located within the Battersea district, was among several projects where I worked in collaboration with Architects for Social Housing (ASH). The brief aimed to develop the estates infrastructure and landscape as an alternative to demolition and rebuild, in turn resulting in the displacement of the community. This involved working closely with representatives from the estate in order to resolve the conceptual design whilst responding to the needs of the inhabitants.

PHOTOGRAPHY

PHOTOS The following includes a small selection of my architectural photography. I use framing and composition to capture aspects of architecture that I find unique. The abstract compositions grounded in the familiar challenge me to remain inquisitive throughout my experience of a space. Photography, like sketching, is a means of understanding of the built environment, developing my visual sensitivity and awareness of design.
