Welcome YOKOSO and welcome to the 20th Japanese Film Festival! This year we’re excited to bring you the best of 2016’s uplifting, tear-jerking, heart-warming, creepy, and inspiring Japanese cinema. JFF presents Japan’s freshest films in drama, anime, comedy, thriller, romance, and documentary. The JFF is presented by The Japan Foundation, Sydney, and tours major Australian cities and regional centres. Welcome to the Hirata household, occasionally dysfunctional but always full of love.

The only birthday present Tomiko Hirata wants from her husband of 50 years is a divorce. Shocked by the announcement, the Hirata’s grown up children go to extraordinary, almost comical, lengths to save their beloved parents’ marriage. A whimsical drama and light-hearted comedy directed by former Yasuhiro Ozu protégé Yoji Yamada (The Hidden Blade, Tokyo Family).

Chihaya, Taichi and Arata are childhood friends, bound by their passion for competitive karuta (a traditional Japanese card game using poetry and lightning-fast reactions). Separated by circumstance, they are now teenagers on different paths – but energetic Chihaya believes the karuta national championship will reunite their friendship. But when classical poetry is not exactly cool, can Chihaya find enough students to start a karuta team?

Thrown off balance, will Chihaya regain confidence in time to lead her team?

The students continue to train extra hard as assassins, discovering skills they didn’t know they had. Surprising revelations about Koro-sensei’s origins also surface, stirring mixed feelings amongst the students. The teacher and students must remain united to face a new threat heading their way!

Metal-head Eikichi returns to his quirky family on their island hometown

Sporting a mohawk, Eikichi returns home to announce his engagement to his Tokyoite girlfriend. His conservative dad Osamu is outraged but secretly delighted at the news. The village celebrates Eikichi’s homecoming, but not long after, Osamu is diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. The events that follow are a blend of hilarity and tragedy as father and son patch up old wounds through a shared love for music.
