LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Hafa Adai – What a great and busy month it has been for sports enthusiasts around the island. As we welcome you to our 4th edition we are constantly in awe of the positive feedback and support from the community and most importantly, you, the reader. The Shell V-Power Smokin’ Wheels burned up the Guam International Raceway for the 31st year. Guam hosted competitors from Japan for this annual 3 day monster’s ball of automotive excitement. From the drag races, to the mud pits, to the BBQ grills, there was something for everyone. Spectators in droves braved the heat to come and support the participants. We have a couple of congratulations due this month. Starting with football, the Circle K Island Stunnerz brought home the championship trophy in a very close match against the 76 Steel Blazers. They are the first ever champions of the Budlight Guam Women’s Tackle Football League. If you are having withdrawals, not to worry, after a very short break these ladies are back in action starting June 2 at Eagles Field. Congratulations also go out to the winners of the 2012 High School Paddling Championships. The John F. Kennedy High School Islanders boy’s teams, the Academy of Our Lady of Guam Cougars and the Okkodo Lady Bulldogs each sailed away to victory in their respective divisions. Tokyo, Japan played host to the 2012 International Friendship Tournament of which 6 Guam Kyokushin Karate students participated. Lead by Senpai Chris Biolchino, this was an opportunity for the Guam team to compete against top level fighters and to gain international competition experience. Last but certainly not least, check out our photo coverage of the Skate Jams and High School Track & Field action that recently took place. At Milestones Sports we do not measure the stories we cover by the amount of people in the stands but by the passion and aspiration of the athletes competing. In every edition we pound the pavement to cover a variety of sports and continue to be amazed by the amount of action packed into every square mile of our Island.

Sincerely,

he asphalt was calling and racing enthusiasts answered in droves. For the past 30 years racers

brought the heat and the weekend of April 13-15 at the Guam International raceway was no different. The festivities started full throttle as fans cheered on their favorite dragsters Friday night in hopes they move on to the Smokin Wheels Drag Race Championship race on Saturday. The off road excitement reved up Saturday with a full line up of Motorcross and ATV racing with Guam’s own Robert Bucek coming in third place. Sunday, dirty Sunday, for fans and racers alike. The fans poured in starting at 8:30am for the ATV finals. The Cars Plus Tuff Rig Challenge lived up to its name as no drivers were able to overcome the mud pit. It was an exciting conclusion to this action packed weekend. MS

he Circle K Island Stunnerz took home the crown as the first EVER champions of the Budlight Guam Women’s Tackle Football League, defeating the previously undefeated 76 Steel Blazers. After a amazing 6 lead changes, with a

final score of 50-47 the game came down to the final two minutes where that age old saying proved true, the best offense is a great defense. While it was defense that won the game one can’t leave out the big plays adding points to the board by Stunnerz running back Lorina Guerrero. Queen of the day was Vanity Palomo of the Stunnerz taking home post-season’s Most Valuable Player. MS

Victory

Skate Jam N

ot even the rain could stop over 200 avid skaters from coming out to the VictorySkateJam event held on April 28, 2012 at the Dededo Skate Park. Unlike other skating competitions, this

was simply one where our youth could come out and enjoy a time of free-style skating, with giveaways, entertainment and lots of food and drinks being provided throughout the night. The top 2 winners in the Rail, Big Air and Double Set categories were awarded with prizes but unfortunately their names could not be obtained as of press time. “To promote a fun and safe environment, to encourage today’s youth that they are visible in our community and that there is a greater path in life available for them” - was the purpose of this event which was sponsored by the Underground, a ministry of Victory Chapel Christian Fellowship Church in Dededo. Many thanks go out to the numerous local businesses who supported this event with their contributions and especially to our youth of our island for participating and making this fun-filled event a success!! T

he Guam Cricket Club is a recreational club to provide education and enjoyment of the game of cricket on Guam. We’ve been playing cricket on Guam since the early 1990’s. We used to play at the UOG field but now we have shifted to Ypao Beach and made it more recreational and fun. Currently we are playing friendly games on Sunday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.at the Ypao Beach Park. We welcome new players, currently there is no fee to participate and beginners are welcome. All the gear is provided. We have about 25 members currently. We have “family day” from time to time when the families come out and picnic and join into the cricket game. We hope to get more youngsters involved and learning the game so they can keep it going.

Running between wickets

Most of our current club members are from cricket playing countries like India, Sri Lanka, Australia and England. The main reason we setup the club was to allow people that love the game of cricket to be able to participate and play the game here on Guam. You can get more information from sending email to guamcricketclub@yahoo.com or following us on twitter @GuamCricClb. MS

color Eat More

To Stay Healthy

o matter what age we are, we are always being told to eat our vegetables. I remember as a kid, I hated eating anything green and leafy, and would joke that my favorite part of the salad were the croutons. Now that I’m older, I find myself telling my kids and even other adults to eat their vegetables. Even athletes tend to bypass the fruits and vegetables and fill their plates with just carbs and protein. Many young and old athletes don’t realize the benefits of eating plenty of fruits and vegetables and making sure it’s in their regular eating habits. For many people, eating vegetables and fruits means you’re on a diet and want to drop some weight but they have so much more benefits then just weight loss. In order to maximize your vegetable and fruit

30

milestones sports magazine

intake, make sure to eat as many different colors as possible. Different colors means different vitamins and minerals. Vegetables and fruits are packed with these vitamins and minerals that our body needs to function, work, and recover properly. Vitamin C found in oranges, kiwis, and spinach help keep our immune system healthy. Vitamin E found in nuts, tomatoes, broccoli and sweet potatoes helps with the formation of Red Blood cells that deliver nutrients and oxygen to other parts in our body. Calcium found in milk, cheese, and yogurt is a mineral that helps keep our bones strong and also will help with bone recovery. The vitamins and minerals in fruits and vegetables are responsible for making sure our body is functions properly. Vitamins and minerals also play an important role in exercise performance and allows your body to recover properly from a hard workout. When we continue to put stress on our body through grueling workouts, there’s a chance that muscle damage can occur and our immune system can weaken. As athletes continue to work out, free radicals are produced in the body. Free radicals can damage our muscles and other tissues and can also cause fatigue. Fruits and vegetables also have antioxidants that help fight free radicals and protect our bodies from tissue damage. Many of these vitamins, minerals and antioxidants are not produced by our body. This is why it’s important that athletes eat a lot of fruits and vegetables along with their carbs and protein. MS

uam’s High School paddlers took it to the water May 12 at Matapang Beach to test their strength and endurance. Each team brought a tremendous

amount of heart and determination. In place of the usual 500m and 1,000m races this event tested each team’s mental and physical stamina as they raced a 2-mile course for the Sotteru/Sottera division and a mile for the Manhoben division. Gliding to victory in the Sotteru division were the JFK Islanders and in the Sottera the ladies from Academy of Our Lady of Guam Cougars cruised to the win. In the Manhoben Division the boys of JFK locked in top spot while the Okkodo lady Bulldogs sailed to the finish line. MS

HEALTH & FITNESS

10 Tips to get you on track

this summer

S

ummer is here! With this in mind we have put together a quick list of health and fitness tips. We hope that these tips will not only help you lose those extra pounds, but they’ll also form a major part of your healthy, active lifestyle going forward.

Set a fitness goal. Goals are a fundamentally important part of any plan. Set yourself a realistic goal though, one that you can just reach with a little push. Set some milestones along the way to tick off as you pass them. Broadcast Your Goal. Don’t keep your plans to yourself. Tell people (family & friends, colleagues, pets, pars, anyone who will listen) about your goal. It’s far too easy to slip off the path if no-one knows you’re on it. You might even find that the people who you tell will encourage you along the way. Power of Positivity. The ‘negatroids’ out there can really drain your energy and it’s even believed in some quarters that negativity can actually make someone feel ‘weaker’. A positive attitude which is encouraged by surrounding yourself with positive people can appear to have the opposite effect – making you feel strong and fit. Try to keep yourself upbeat about the positive steps you’re taking towards a healthy, active lifestyle.

38

Planning Meals for Fitness. Planning in advance will not only help you to stay on course with your new ‘healthy living regime’ it will also help you avoid binge eating when you suddenly feel that you’ve not eaten that day. Meals at set times of the day are also important. Your breakfast should be something which will set you up for the day, eat a medium sized lunch and don’t overdo it at dinner time. Eating later in the day will also mean that it will be difficult to burn off those extra calories before you go to bed. Take a Class. Having a weekly focus by taking some kind of exercise or fitness class, whether it be Boxercise, Pilates, Zumba or – for the really energetic amongst you – circuit training, will not only mean that you’re involved with people with a similar mindset, but you’ll also find that losing weight will be much easier as you’ll be burning calories as you work out. Not only will you be extending your social life but you’ll be getting fit at the same time. Pika your Activities. If you find an exercise activity that you genuinely enjoy, you’ll find it much less of a chore when you hit the gym. Try something new and see if you like it. Whatever takes your fancy, the key is to find something which you don’t really consider ‘hard work’ and you’ll stick with it much longer – you might even find that you pick up a lifelong interest.

Hånom. Drinking water is vitally important and a fundamental part of living a healthy lifestyle, making up over 70% of our bodies. If your body dehydrates you’ll find yourself feeling more tired and hungry than you’d normally feel. Get into the habit of taking a bottle of water with you and taking small sips as you go through the day.

Take time to Relax. Chill out and realize that losing weight and getting fit needn’t be stressful. Build healthy living into your lifestyle rather than making it a dreaded ‘must do’ all-encompassing obsession. You’ll hopefully find that losing weight and staying trim happens naturally (as long as you implement other tips).

Fresh Air. Suffer from the 3pm energy slump? You’ll find that a break in the day for some fresh air and exposure to natural daylight will really help you to remain focused. Being cooped up all day can make you feel lethargic so a step outside, combined with some sun (if there is any), will provide some welcome Vitamin D from natural light to help you stay on track with your new found healthy living. We live in paradise, open the door and experience it.

Sleep is king. You’ll be amazed at what a good night’s sleep can do, so make this a big part of your plan. Rest allows your muscles and your body time to recover from whatever activities you’ve been taking part in. Don’t go to bed directly after watching TV, try and leave 30 minutes for your brain to wind down. Make sure your bedroom is dark and cool so the body can completely relax. MS

REFEREE’S CORNER

I

t doesn’t matter what they call us; Officials, Referees, Umpires…we have a common goal: Officiate a game fairly & according to the rule book! Being an Official for the sport of Volleyball is very rewarding! I coach and officiate this sport. I do it to keep up with the 3 different rule books we have to follow: NFHS (which governs the Guam Interscholastic Sports Programs), USAV (which governs USA and it’s regions), and FIVB (which governs our International games: our local tournaments, Pacific Games, Micro Games, etc). As an official we are sometimes called names, accused of cheating, or approached by irate spectators questioning our calls. It is important that we maintain our composure so we are not negatively influenced which may result in a bad call. Although run ins with spectators do happen, the vast majority of spectators do respect the calls made by the official. I officiate volleyball games for the love of the sport and I don’t allow myself to be caught up with what the minority of the spectating public is saying. Barbara D. Quinata, M. Ed. SPORTS TECHNOLOGY

Technology

Advances Advantages & Disadvantages

T

he sports we watch today are quicker, the athletes are stronger, and the equipment they use is state of the art in every sense of the word.

Have you watched any recent Tennis matches? If you look at the rackets the players are using you might notice they look nothing like the rackets of yester-century. They are now brightly colored with gigantic heads that make missing the ball almost impossible. They are made of feather-light composite materials that would cause a NASA engineer to get excited. Been to Paseo lately? Baseball bats have come a long way from the early days of the sport. From hard and heavy hickory bats to one-game wonders containing some of the most advanced aluminum alloys on the market, the bat has taken advantage of technological advances while remaining an endearing symbol of skill and sport. All this is so the players can strike the ball harder and faster than ever, while burning less energy schlepping it around the courts and fields. It’s not just tennis and baseball. From Air Jordans to carbon-fiber curling brooms (yes curling is a sport) to ingestible computers in the form of the “Thermometer Pill”, sports tech is big business. And records are now being shattered with industrial efficiency. Advances in technology have in many ways enhanced the entertainment value of sports by enabling players to do things they couldn’t do 10 or 20 years ago. As in eras past, the debate about whether technology has ushered in awe-inspiring displays of modern-day power or eroded the game will likely remain largely on the fringes. Tennis great John McEnroe, who never misses a chance burst the bubble of a fellow athlete, was recently quoted insisting that these hypermodern toys have taken the grace out of the game, and enabled players to appear better than their skills. In short he’s implying that, in their prime, the stars from back in the day could wipe the doubles alley with Djokovic, Nadal, and Serena. What do you think? In whatever sport you watch, are fancy new pieces of gear high-tech crutches, or do they enable innate talent to shine brighter than ever? Should team McEnroe get with the times or should we keep it old school? MS
