700 HE RALD PLAZA Biscayne bay is the anchor to the culture of Miami. True to its identity, the architecture in the bay ascribes its design vernacular to the evolution from the art-deco era and the concentration of rich immigrant culture. 700 Herald Plaza is central in its proximity to culture, living, and the urban environment. As a beacon in the bay, it exists to purposefully harmonize with the local climate and be a destination for habitation and entertainment amongst the Arts District. The design for 700 Herald Plaza is molded from context and site conditions. A large draw to the site is its proximity to the water, along with having an address within the Arts district. Form is born from the fusion of a Cuban design flare with the nautical vessel forms found on the adjacent bay. 700 herald plaza is about luxury in living and amenities to accompany this lifestyle.

SITE
Positioned in Biscayne Bay, the site sits at the intersection where 14th street terminates into Herald Plaza.
By continuing 14th street through the site as a pedestrian walkway, the gesture promotes circulation all the way to the ocean. This activates a plot of land otherwise isolated by two main thoroughfares.
CONDENSED MASSING
DIRECTING FOCUS
By setting the building mass back from the water, future neighboring views are less restricted. Views from the site are also optimized with the creation of multi-level public gathering spaces that overlook the harbor. 6
CONTINUED CIRCULATION
Building masses are drawn together with a singular gesture in the building’s form. When approaching the water, views are directed to the horizon. When approaching the building, views are drawn up to the sky.
PLATFORM EXTRUDE
LIGHT ACCESS
Raising the site platform by 3 feet lifts the building grade to 9 feet above sea level. This transfer carries the first floor out of a major flood zone, yet maintains sight lines from 14th street to the ocean.
Adjacent sites are yet to be developed, so future shading must be taken into account. By shifting building mass to the north, the south facade steps back allowing more light to penetrate to lower levels.
SHADE
FINAL FORM
Core circulation is focused on the south side of the building. Positioning a screen along this facade shades units and occupants from the harsh sun, simultaneously creating an iconic form in an already distinct arts district.

In the past 25 years alone, Fargo has had 8 “major floods” that have caused millions in damages to infrastructure. In 2009, over $100 million in damage was done. This has led to the formation of more permanent dikes shielding the city from the water’s crest, in turn removing homes from the water’s edge. Where paths once existed, walls are now raised. Porticade demonstrates how a client’s home can intrinsically reconnect Fargo with its river while simultaneously fostering a symbiotic relationship with the environment of a historic river-way. Porticade is a house that serves as both a portal to the river and an active flood wall.

AMTRAK CO N T I N E N TA L [ FA R G O ]
Nicknamed the “Gateway to the West”, Fargo, ND serves as a pristine location for a forward looking mode of continental transit. Fargo’s downtown Amtrak Continental Station is part of a rejuvenated urban development that creates regional identity, provides a memorable experience, and strengthens local community for both citizens and visitors from across the country. The development features underground parking for 10,000 cars, a 250 room hotel, and mixed-use infill to promote retail and living opportunities.

DISSOLVE
If one were to take a plane ride across North Dakota, they would immediately realize the organized grid system that was developed to section off farmland for agriculture It is from the hard-working people of this land that Dissolve gains its materiality and structure. The site is situated on the western edge of the capital mall. Through this section of land runs a path that was intentionally planted with 75 species of trees native to North Dakota in 1985. Dissolve preserves this feature and infuses it amongst its architecture. Dissolve is a government building for the people. It breaks the cold barrier between state and civilian spaces with public space, Its ornamented structure draws from the land’s grid system, and its construction is rugged, mechanical, and industrial, just like the identity of North Dakota.

The initial massing is taken from the capital building, or a “skyscraper”.
The building is tipped over to convert the emphasis from vertical to horizontal.
The fallen, “broken” massing is separated with circulation and central nodes.
The singular mass is then broken into multidisciplinary sectors.

STRUCTURE
SITE To accomplish the transition from sky-scraper to land-scraper, bold transformations were made to the typical form of an office building: a skyscraper. In the instance of this site, inspiration was drawn directly from the capitol building. The concept of a skyscraper is pushed onto its side in a horizontal gesture, mimicking the flatness of the state and accentuating its horizon. The form then breaks on the 2 percent site grade, creating a green corridor through the center of the building. This green-way is a continuation of Arboretum Trail, now a fusion of public walkway and office circulation. 24
The mass is conformed to the slope of the landscape, and the arboredum trails are introduced.
Interior green-way walls are setback to increase the internal light and promote plant reclamation of the site.

The verticality of a skyscraper reaches to the sky just as the land-scraper reaches horizontally out across the flat landscape.
Neoclassical design is the guide to government architecture. The column represents stability and vigor. This gesture to the past is expressed by the holding of columns horizontally with the building’s structure.
Just as the agricultural grid is interrupted by rivers and railways in north Dakota, the structural grid of the office is interrupted by the arboretum trail.

The Huangshan mountain range is one of the largest tourist destinations in China. Traditional literature and paintings often will depict these rounded granite peaks jutting between clouds and Huangshan pines. Because of its popularity with tourists and its remote location, there is a large need for lodging and entertainment to accommodate the nearly 3 million annual tourists. The huangshan club is situated on the south end of scenic Lake Taipinghu. Cabins line the hillside in the resort, centering around the Huangshan Club.

TO K YO A Q U AT I C S CENTER
Year: 2019 Location: Tokyo, Japan Building: Aquatics Center Type: Sports Facility Group: Adam Reynolds, Justin Berg, Hunter Chaput Software: Sketchup, Lumion, Photoshop, Illustrator
Every four years, around 200 nations from around the globe participate in Olympic games in feats of almost inhuman effort. In summer 2021, the games were held in Tokyo, Japan. As part of these games, facilities must house visitors and competitors in mass quantities. While conforming to this technical challenge, structures are to simultaneously be a symbol of the host nation’s cultural identity. Tokyo aquatics center is a parametrically expandable and thus future-proof representation of ancient Japanese typology that is suitable for hosting the aquatic events in the Tokyo Olympic games.

The history of Japanese architecture is steeped in light frame wooden construction. This project aims to convey such a delicate form with a substantial structure. A lightly framed wooden roof webbed with PTFE fiberglass architectural membrane floats above the competition space. Suspension cables holding this structure are anchored back to mass timber columns, which in turn are counter-anchored to the ground. This structure-membrane method is reminiscent of rice paper used in walls and room dividers as part of Japanese vernacular. Wood is echoed throughout the facility in both live trees and wooden walls lining the concourse.

T H AT C H C O R E BIRDHOUSE
Year: 2019 Building: Bird House Type: Residential Tools: Table Saw, Lathe, Router, Dremel, Sanding
A building should be an extrapolation of its environment. Each detail must be inspired by the moment, place, or time. This is the design philosophy of Pritzker architect Jean Nouvel, whose style was to be imitated in Thatchcore Birdhouse. The complex geometries of Thatchcore are tailored to the needs of a House Wren. For this crevice-dwelling bird, a walnut sphere acts as a simple abstraction of a hole in which to dwell. The sphere is entangled in a tessellation of ash wood, overall formed within a cylinder. This shell plays on the natural structure of a tree through whose branches the bird must travel to arrive at home.

ME D I TAT I ON H OU SE Created in the second year of architecture studio, two structures are placed intentionally amongst the trees, breaking their verticality with the unique horizontal facade. The somewhat organic design is meant to mimic the bark on a tree, while at the same time replicating the cascading of light through the canopy above.
ISLAN D PAR K PAVILIO N Located south of downtown Fargo, Island Park is host to walking paths and ancient trees that are enjoyed by visitors in all seasons. However, Island Park lacks a place to gather in winter and in large groups. The formation of a pavilion provides yearround entertainment and gathering space to park visitors.
