The aim is to build an ice hockey stadium and training facilities in Guangzhou Tian Hei Sport Centre. The interior of a ice hockey stadium must be cool enough, so roof and skin with high environmental performance is needed.
Form Finding - The green dots represent the high points and the red dots repersent the low points. It gives out countless shapes and forms depends on hows points are connected and the location of those points. These shapes and forms have a lot of programmatic, structural and environmental potential.

Less solar gain
Geco is used to test the solar gain of a surface, surface with more folding has leass solar gains.

The site is located at the boundary between the commercial and residentail area in quarry bay. After the office hours, there are very little contact between two areas. There are event spaces in the site but are not utilised at all. The aim of this project is to created a gallery hotel which can merge the two areas, and live up the site after office hours. This gallery hotel needs to include a well planned event spaces which will draw different grops of people together.
New programmes are created and inserted within Sea View Building and Hoi Wan Building. My intention for this project is to make necessary changes only, so for Hoi Wan Building, I didn’t make any changes on its facade. Restaurant is added on its ground and first floor, hotel guest rooms replace some of the residential units and will be facing the nice green courtyard. For Sea View Building, the north side will be replaced by a new facade. All the public programmes will be placed at the new facade side and the more private programme (artist studio) will be placed at the old facade side. Hoi Wan Building

Galleries and Workshops are merge together.

Definition to imoport the mesh surface in rhino into ecotect 3. The umbrella structure 4. When the sun angle or distance from sun is larger or smaller than a specific value, the umbrella structure will react either open or close. 5. Move the point to curve’s closest point which causes the structure to close up. 6. Return to the original shape.
The inspiration of this project is inspired by the behaviour of the nature which plants reacts to a simulation and thus trigers a reaction for protection purpose. One example is Mimosa Purdica, when one touches its leaves, it trigers the water molecule to diffust out of the cell, the loss in cell pressure cause it to collapses. For this exercise, we would like to explore the realm between physical and digital with a mechanical prototype. The digital end could be simulated by grasshopper, geco, firefly, arduino and servo motors, while the physcial could be a touch or light sensor. Hence it creates a feedback loop which the prototype could transfer data to the computer or vice versa.
Grasshopper definition methodology 1. Link grasshopper to Ecotect 2. Set the sun path according to a specific day of the year
Methodology 7. Convert the umbrella structure into a mesh. 8. Import the mesh that’s created in Rhino into Ecotect. 9. Calculates the insolation value and it changes depends on whether the umbrella is opened or closed. 10. Return the insolation value of the plane mesh result from Ecotect to Grasshopper and Rhino.
When the light sensor is covered the structure closes
When the light sensor is uncovered the structure opens
When designing the facade of a building, we usually pay attention on the surfaces only. Inspire by the image, we would like to focus on the edges condition between surfaces. Modules are developed by joining two surface, and varying the control line in between. Each smaller modules are then connected together and form a larger piece. Other than simply joining the modules together, we would also like to map them onto the surface. The surfaces will be able to control the size, shape and density of the overall geometry. We believe these geometries can act as a structural element. Plane of grid are setup to control the movement of the orange point. The form of each module is controlled by the location of three different points on seperate grids.
A “Shark Gill is developed from the image which is a system that can applied on the modules. By adjusting the rotation and size of gill, it can generate different lighting and spacial quality into the geometry.
Each modules can join with other modules to form a larger pieces. Each size of modules will serve different programmes.

In the thesis, I would like to investigate the techniques used to create spatial illusion by combining geometric illusion and projecting dazzle camouflage pattern into it. In reality, observers usually define size, nature and quality of a space by its vertical axis, horizontal axis and its perspective. The new techniques create illusion by distorting observer’s perception of space by twisting, shrinking, scaling, and widening.
