Uptown Crossing is a mixed use retail center with entrepreneurial office space and direct access to the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system. The total square footage for the project is 367,047. The program includes a market, pharmacy, food services, and retail on lower levels; an office on the top level of the main structure; and an auditorium and rooftop restaurant, including outdoor space, on the upper levels. The core elevators provide circulation to all areas and views into the large central atrium that begins at the northeast corner circling around the center of the building.

The main floor diagram illustrates the footprint of the basement floor, including the square footage underneath the sidewalk, as well as the 1st, Mezzanine, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th levels. The smaller images represent the 5th and 6th level office floors that were constructed on top of the main building.

The ceiling heights are 15’-6” on all levels and 24’ on the Mezzanine level. The 1990 plans that were used in this project have extensive “shotcrete” markings. The retrofit occurred due to extensive damage to the building in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake.

Concept: Urban Archaeology
The encroachment of nature on the built environment through the means of destruction... The evolution of the concept for Uptown Crossing led to Urban Archaeology. Simply put, Urban Archaeology is the study of cities and the way people have inhabited the urban environment over generations. With Oakland’s rich history, controversial reputation within the Bay Area, and confluence of different cultures make Urban Archaeology a fitting concept. It was immediately clear that Oakland’s history and dominant subcultures need to be celebrated and supported.

Programming & Space Planning SQUARE FOOTAGE USAGE: The program drives the design in a manner that always questions the way a typical mall works while staying true to the expectations of the consumer. It was clear early on that one change to the program affected many others. It was always a priority to ensure that the building supported all programming elements by having a strong utility and back of house. This type of thinking ensures that the building will function as efficiently as possible. Every main programming element has support in this project so that it can succeed and produce positive results for the client.

Atrium The concept for the atrium was inspired by the idea of rebuilding after destruction. I envisioned a wrecking ball hitting the northeast corner of the building and what would be the result of rebuilding from that destruction. The atrium has a 20’ diameter digital ball conveying information in all directions and four columns that pay homage to the columns taken out during the renovation.

The public plaza on level on of UPtown crossing uses multiple access points to generate traffic from the street into the building. An open dining concourse can be removed of all seating to host events and forums. The food truck concourse provides an alternative to permanent arcades or mall cafe program.

Inspired by mixed materials and road striping of the urban environment, the Food Truck Emporium is overall nuetrality showcases vendors. The 24’ ceiling height allows the sculptural ceiling elements to appear if they are in the process of falling down.

Much like the urban environment, this space employs the idea of the “patch.� Rubber flooring can be cut and switched out with complementary colors when a spot has worn out. Reclaimed wood and concrete compliment vivid commercial fabrics.

Located above Forever 21 in San Francisco is an 8,000 square foot building with 15 foot ceilings and a lobby space at street level, allowing access to the fourth floor. The client is experienced in the spa business and desires a concept based on Ice. Ice and the juxtaposition of Icelandic culture are main inspirations for the concept of the spa.Throughout the ages, humankind has been captivated by ice’s glacial majesty. Iceland in particular has centuries-old world-famous spas that combine the contemplative powers of ice and the physical rejuvenation of natural hot springs. Throughout this design you will see the tension created through the use of natural and man-made, hot and cold, soft and hard. The end result is a relaxing spa that draws from Icelandic culture and ice in its many forms.

The small lobby at street level, houses a retail shop and elevators that allow access to the 4th floor. The main lobby allows clients to meet with staff and discuss spa treatments. The walls are constructed to appear as if they have been chiseled out of rock and ice, these walls provide division of relaxation areas; providing privacy and solitude. Separate male and female areas create boundaries that are private but immediately spill into common areas. The exterior terrace has artificial turf that provides a soft and familiar escape from the city. Including a small cafe, the spa is ADA compliant, provides adequate staff areas, and laundry facilities.

Material Inspiration
Material and textural elements inspired by the Icelandic culture celebrate the idea of “opposites” that occur in the Icelandic culture such as “hot and cold.”

In the Spa
The relaxation lounge (above) is cave-like with an emphasis on the heat source. LED lighting provides a calming atmosphere while the reclaimed flooring provides comfort and familiarity. The relaxation pools (left) give impression of being in an ice cave. The bridge splits the pools and allows patrons to ease into the warm waters. The translucent panels create an isolation from the rest of the world that is both soothing and technologically advanced.

Light Up The Night
The concept for a new Macy’s shoe boutique is “Light up the night.” This concept will employ the Pantone color variety and display qualities allowing the space to have interactive displays; shoppers can match shoes with best colors and clothing options recommended to them from other areas of the store. The concept will challenge the neutral tones of the standard Macy’s department store and give a fresh look to attract a younger audience. Use of LED lighting, glass, metals, and high end furnishings will inhabit the concept and assist in the interactive components.The emphasis of coordination that comes from the Pantone color line will give the customer the confidence to “Light up the night!”

Acrylic and metal shoe supports provide a random and fun alternative to the traditional shoe display. iPad interface: The customer can use the touchscreen or the iPad to control the interactive wardrobe.

Tiered platform displays for certain brands and special events. Specified in black or white.
LED touch screen technology is fully interactive, allowing customers to pick and choose outfits to have waiting at the cash-wrap or fitting rooms. Can also be used to order items to be sent anywhere in the world.
Custom table inspired by the abstraction of the high heel shoe. Made of Corian composite and tiered tempered glass.
The latest in hologram technology lets the customer see items in 3D before they ask to see it in person or order.

Rooftop Restaurant The rooftop restaurant is a response to the historic presence of a rooftop terrace and the current dominant subculture in the Oakland area. The design employs elements of the street such as the utility poles as design and infrastructure. The celebration of the “patch” continues by using reclaimed marble weaved into the distressed flooring.

The bar interior is an amalgamation of the urban environment. The open concept is also a corridor to the main restaurant. and celebrates the old meeting the new through the use of reclaimed materials.

The restaurant provides an industrial atmosphere while also allowing focus to be on the exposed kitchen areas. A mirrored back wall creates the illusion that the space continues indefinitely. 45
