THE NORDIC MOOD A semester of study in Copenhagen, Denmark taught disciplines in Nordic design and culture, as well as an understanding of quality urban societies. This mixed use-residential project focuses on the use of Cross Laminated Timber to create a high rise structure focused on maximizing sunlight and creating community. The design is inspired by values instilled in Danish Co-Housing projects. There is something to be said about seeing your neighbors are home and the activity of the building. This creates a stronger sense of community and safety in an urban environment.

The site is situated between Central St. + Broadway St. in the Kansas City Loop area. It is currently an existing parking lot 56’ x 140’. Due to the shortest dimension of the lot facing South, a major concern became how to maximize the amount of Southern exposure while still allowing light into a courtyard/garden space. 9

The units were modeled based on the courtyard home typology with the thought to give every unit access to outdoor space. The units then extend East to give every unit some Southern exposure. Each floor consists of multiple unit sizes to encourage mixedincome interaction. Each unit also shares a balcony with another.

The project attempts to combine Passivhaus practices with other sustainable strategies to maximize environmental response systems. The typ. exterior wall condition achieves R-40, which more than exceeds Passivhaus standards. This is combined with maximum Southern glazing + cross-ventilation to control the interior environment.

This was the first design project I did while studying for a semester abroad in Copenhagen, Denmark. Architectural design in Denmark, and more specifically, residential design, is strongly influenced by the idea of communal living. Dane’s have such a strong sense of pride, and care for their people as a whole. Thus, architect’s in Denmark do not design for the individual. They design for the people as a whole. A new take on a traditional typology, attempts to formally telegraph this feeling of communal living.

The two-bedroom units formally represent a cohesive whole. The residents of each unit share a circulation corridor in the center which separates the two units. However, when viewed from the outside, the two units appear to be one. The residents also have a shared balcony space facing south, and side-by-side patios on the North. This modern take on a Danish classic, respects its cultural context.

Parametric Wayfinding S C R I P T I N G , FA B R I C AT I N G , + I N S TA L L C ONDI T I ON

This project was done for a Parametric Design course. The end of semester project required a group of four students to create an installation piece that would be a wayfinding device for the 2014 SADP graduation ceremony. Our group chose the stairwell due to its interesting existing parameters. Each string is representative of a graduating student. The piece extends 4 stories, running between the stairwell of the School of Architecture.

My role in the project was to write the script for the project. As a group we decided on the design, and then I scripted it in Rhino + Grasshopper. One of my colleagues then prepared the file for CNC, and the four of us in the group installed the project. The idea originated from a graduation cap: a line, plane, and volume.

This project focuses on the linkages between spaces based on the city of Venice. The spaces in the city guide its pedestrians through a labyrinth of buildings and streets in a very disorienting manner, and the city towers act as wayfinding devices in these disorienting situations. The various iterations of my project were all working towards creating a similar environment of a meandering path through the site, creating interesting views and spaces around every corner.

The site is situated on one of the few vacant lots left in Venice. It is an interesting intersection point between the IUAV school of architecture, Palazzo di San Nicolo, and a major docking point for tourist ships. The site attempts to deal with this intersection through circulation; connecting North, South, East, + West.

Circulation studies were key in the arrangement of programs, and their overlap. Many studies were done to imagine all of the possibilities of how a visitor might circulate through the site. Each of these studies revealed something different, which ultimately led to the resolution of the program. 29

Prairie + Earth A DESIGN + BUILD STUDIO C ONDI T I ON

This Design + Build course was a challenge in designing something that actually needed to be built by the designers themselves. This challenge forced us to deal with reality. This meant understanding material properties, factoring in tolerances, working with a budget, and working under a strict schedule so that the project could be completed by the ribbon cutting date. Additionally, an understanding of how components actually come together was very important for success.

Multiple design iterations and research in the Rammed Earth material were conducted before construction could begin. The Rammed Earth process is very unique in that it is extremely time consuming, and limiting in terms of form. These parameters played a strong role in the design process.

Each student had an assigned role; working together as a small firm. As a project architect, the majority of the final design decisions were made by me and 2 others. The three of us together did all of the BIM modeling, and drew all of the construction documents + shop drawings.

From start to finish the project consisted of design, BIM modeling, budgeting, scheduling, consulting, presenting to a real life client, researching, cutting, fastening, welding, digging, ramming, pouring concrete, building formwork, assembling, disassembling, and teamwork to build a structure that will serve the public for years to come.
