WOODEN SLATS FILTERS THE EXTERIOR ELEMENTS. ALSO PROVIDES AN INHERENT TEXTURE TO THE LANDSCAPE AND THE EXPERIENCE
CORTEN STEEL PANELS RELATIVELY LIGHT MATERIAL IN A STRUCTURAL ASPECT, BUT ITS NON-PERFORATED SURFACE DENOTES A SOLID BARRIER
PERFORATED METAL DECKING ENHANCES THE CONNECTION TO THE GROUND AND YET KEEPS IT SEPARATE

02 BROWN’S RANCH THREE SEPERATE TRAILS DIVERGE FROM THE POINT OF THIS TRAILHEAD. THIS PROPOSED STRUCTURE FOCUSES ON BOTH CONNECTING TO ITS SITE AND PROVIDING SEPERATION BETWEEN ADMINSTRATION AND PUBLIC USE. HOWEVER, EACH SPACE IS ENHANCED WITH FRAMED VIEWS TO THE LANDSCAPE AND ITS TRAILS.

SHAPED THE ROOF ELEMENTS ARE THE MOST DYNAMIC ELEMENT OF THIS DESIGN. THEY ARE FOLDED TO CAPTURE THE STUNNING VISTAS AND FOCUS THE USERS TOWARD THE NUMEROUS TRAILS THEY CAN EXPLORE.

SITE CONNECTION EACH DIVIDER IS THE MAIN CONNECTION TO THE SITE. AS THE ROOFS BEND AND FOLD TO FRAME THE DESERT VIEWS, THEY WILL ULTIMATELY CONNECT TO A DIVIDING WALL OR THEY CONNECT DIRECTLY THEMSELVES. THIS CONNECTION IS WHAT FORMS A COHESIVE AND COMPLETE DESIGN. THE CANOPY ROOFS PROVIDE PLENTY OF SHELTER FOR PEOPLE TO GATHER AND TO CONNECT WITH ONE ANOTHER. B R O W N ’ S PAV I L I O N

03 THE COLOR OF SKY THE MOST INTRIGUING PARTS OF THE ISLAND OF SKYE ARE FOUND IN THE LORE AND ITS PEOPLE, SUPPLEMENTED BY BREATHTAKING LANDSCAPES. UNFORTUNATELY ITS INFRASTRUCTURE CAN’T SUPPORT THE VERY POPULAR TOURIST LOCATIONS.

INSPIRATION THE DESIGN OF THE SPACE IS MEANT TO REFLECT UPON THE BEAUTIES AND THE HERITAGE THE ISLAND INHABITS AND TO CHALLENGE THE CURRENT WAYS IN WHICH WE CONTRIBUTE TO ITS DEGREDATION.

EXHIBITS DISPLAYS THE EXHIBIT WAS INTENTIONALLY STYLIZED IN DARK COLORS TO HIGHLIGHT THE OUTSTANDING COLORS THE ISLE HAS TO OFFER. IT ALSO ENCOURAGES USER ENGAGEMENT AND REFLECTION.

CULTURE WHILE THE BEAUTY OF THE ISLE IS IMPORTANT I DIDN’T WANT TO NEGLECT THE HERITAGE IT HAS ENVELOPED FOR CENTURIES. THIS CULTURE DRAWS IN TOURISTS EVEN THOUGH THEY MAY NOT KNOW MUCH ABOUT IT. THE CIRCULATION WAS CAREFULLY CONSIDERED TO OPTIMIZE FLOW AND TO DIRECT THE USERS TO KEY TAKE AWAY MESSAGES.

04 MULTI-FAMILY DEVELOPMENT DESIGNING FOR MULTIFAMILY DEVELOPMENT CAN BE TRICKY DUE TO ALL OF THE DIFFERENT PARAMETERS AND RESTRAINTS THAT NEED TO BE CONSIDERED. SOME TIMES IT JUST STARTS TO TAKE SHAPE.

INSPIRATION SINCE THE SITE WAS SITUATED IN MESA, AZ, I INITIALLY CHOSE TO DRAW INSPIRATION FROM ITS RICH HISTORY AND CULTURE, IN ORDER TO ROOT THE PROJECT TO ITS PLACE. I DISCOVERED A HISTORY THAT WAS DEVELOPED FROM THE LIFE OF THE IRRIGATION CHANNELS.

COMMUNITY THE MOST PREDOMINANT CONSIDERATION WAS TO FIT THE NEW DESIGN INTO THE SURROUNDING NEIGHBORHOOD. THIS WAS ACHEIVED BY EMULATING THE SAME FORM AND DESIGN TOOLS THAT WERE SEEN IN THE EXISTING HOMES.
ART + CONNECTIONS SOME OF THE SECONDARY IDEAS WERE TO CENTER THE LIVES OF THE RESIDENTS AROUND EMERGING ARTISTIC DIRECTIONS, CONNECT THE RESIDENTS THROUGH “IRRIGATION CHANNELS”, AND TO LOWER THE COMMUNITY INTO THE EARTH TO EMPHASIZE ONE’S CONNECTION TO IT.

LAYOUT TO AVOID A STACKED APARTMENT AESTHETIC, THE APARTMENT FORMS ARE OFFSET AND STACKED. EACH PARTICULAR APARTMENT IS UNIQUELY SHAPED TO OPTIMIZE AVAILABLE VIEWS OR TO MAINTAIN PRIVACY WHILE STILL SUPPLYING VIEWFRAMES THAT CONNECT INTERIOR SPACES WITH EXTERIOR.

05 PRINCESS OF WALES CONSERVATORY THIS DESIGN WAS IN COLLABORATION WITH ALAN ESTRADA AND SUDHA UNNAVA. TOGETHER WE CREATED NEW PROGRAMS AND ARCHITECTURAL FORM FOR AN EXPANSION OF THE CONSERVATORY. WHILE IMPLEMENTING THE SAME INTENTIONS OF THE EXISTING BUILDING WE UTILIZED THEM IN A DIFFERENT WAY.

INSPIRATION THE EXISTING CONSERVATORY ESTABLISHS VERY STRONG RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN THE STRUCTURE AND THE SITE IT CONNECTS TO. IT WAS MEANT TO BRING THE EXTERIOR INTO THE EXHIBIT BUT NOT TO DISTRACT FROM THE EXPERIENCE ONCE INSIDE.

HARMONY THE LINEAR FORM AND TRANSPARENCY LED MANY DESIGN DECISIONS. WE CHOSE TO USE VARIATIONS OF THE ORIGINAL ANGLE IN THE TRIANGLES TO DIRECT THE RELATIONSHIP OF FORM AND SPACE. THE ORIGINAL GRID SPACING BETWEEN TRUSSES WAS ALSO INCORPORATED INTO THE NEW PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT.

SK EXPERIENCE IT IS IMPORTANT THAT THE EXPANSION DIDN’T OUTSHINE THE ALREADY MAGNIFICENT FORM OF THE ORIGINAL. THUS, THE HEIGHTS OF EACH PROGRAM WERE CRAFTED TO NOT EXCEED THE EXISTING HEIGHT LIMIT AND IN CONSIDERATION OF THE SPACE REQUIREMENTS
