// ESAP 2008.13 In this brief selection on academic works, projected as a student in ESAP, i have decided to display only my very first and the last one. decided also on making short remarks on what lead me to it perhaps and what i think about them today, how they make me feel. About this school, im left only with gratitude, and a word to all my mentors, to each one of them in it´s own way, for an education with caracter, diversified and most of all, a loving one. Special thanks to Nicolau Brandão, a figure of remarkable importance to this house, a man whose posture never left students go wrong, them who really saw themselves as one. Susana Milão on a charming and contagious enthusiasm for the discipline. Davide Viana, for everything that definately would fit in all this paragraphs. To the unsettling João Carreira on his borowed lectures. Jorge Pimentel for teaching me on the importance of drawing, and telling me how to pursue it and finally have a deep look to it. Telmo Castro, Luís Rodrigues, Jorge Vaz, Alexandra Trevisan, Fátima Marques Pereira, Francisco Queiroz, Eurico Salgado, Gonçalo Louro, Fátima Fernandes. Certainly there would be much to write about every single one of them. Thanks for the ride. José, 2017

// ESAP. 2008 As a kid, i have never built a cabin. I had the will to do so, that was not the problem, all arranged between friends, days and days looking for the perfect place, thinking on what materials would be the most awesome, knowingly that we should be able to get our kid hands on them, prepping the grounds thinking how high could it reach, one floor, maybe two or even suspended on a tree, and then at that exact moment, we would carry on and play some football. That is how far we went with our intentions and plans. I realize that, we conceived so many, designed them as one could dream of, in a practice that i can very well relate to our practice nowadays. We are dreamers. The site, had got me thinking preety seriously on the minimum space required for a fine living, the idea to conceive a very respectfull integration with the surrounding nature, making it one with the nature, and by that making the most out of it, as one possibly could think of. A suspended cabin, resting over the hill, releasing the ground for the nature natural course, and having a garden in it´s roof top, as a continuous experience. I remember how fast some spaces could make me dull, as a kid, that i tried to have it fixed someway in this design. The balcony turns into an extra space, and that itself changes the whole dynamics of the cabin onto various possibilities. Im left only with something to say about this project, wich is that this cabin, is the cabin this kid never done.

2013, the year and this project calls for the end of my journey at ESAP. The site could not be more inspiring. A Hill overlooking the Douro River, where once one of our greatest Writer fell in love, and made us too, by an important book he wrote whilst one of his stays over there. A place that found it expression essence, over the needs and wisdom of who ever knew how to make the most out of this hills. Today we have it world wide recognizable as a valuable patrimonium, these terraces resting and overlooking the river, giving the essence on this pure ground, where vineyards come to life. My project had to be an intrepretation of this solution, i wanted the constructive system that paid tribute to it. Instead of building this supportive walls that allow firm ground to be planted, it would give life to my design plans, having it to be one with it surrounds, history and essence. This was where i started conceptually, adapting the composition, to what would become the site new reality, where Eça de Queiroz, once found himself in Love. Sketch

Professional Works Selection On this selection of works, i have choosen the very first ones, after my internship for OASRN. It is a small compilation, things took so much time to be made, and there was so many factor´s that can, and would intervene in this process, that it was kind of frustrating to realise. Nevertheless, the dificulties were all overcome, the process started to become sharper and soon realised that, academic works could mainly contribute with that continously love we have to live with in our profession.

Pursued something simple and sober, wich i thought was the essence needed in a place like this one, emotive, and in for the eternal rest. A rectangular section, with pre determined allignements and measures, gives way to a golden section inspired design. A simple cut on each of the 4 top blocks, together design a christian cross. Their extension defines everything else preety much. A small flower vase replaces the tumular stone. There is not much else to say about this work. Made it with a great deal of my heart.

// Penafiel, 2014 In this project, there was not much to do about the formal spaces estabilished in the layout disposition previously built in. Usually this era dated constructions, display a preety rigid and yet well formed and organised spaces. Though it was left in abandoned and in preety bad shape, i have decided to give it a new life and maintaining some of the caracteristic´s that once existed in the past. The great deal, and the sum of the work, was on construction detail´s itself.

// Penafiel, Portugal 2014 Regarding this projecto specifically, i recall that back then, the client was a very conservative individual, with a preety much traditional taste. His very first demand was promptly a tile roof top. Back then i realised, in order to achieve an interesting piece, that would fully satisfy me as an author, i would have to make a kind of different approach on the method. The organization would have to be pushed to as bold as it could be, in order for it reflection on the outside, would be the most reasonable, and unequivocate. Pushing things this way, would end to result in a very non-traditional organization on the space inside. Switched what is usually used, by having the main floor with the most private areas, and the second floor, would be downwards, with the common area.

Sketching In this Sketch selection, ends up fitting drawings made on couple travel´s, project, imaginarium and references. It seduces me, the pursue of a determined expression in a draw, and how exquisite it can get´s, as a tool of communicating an idea. Believe it is the most close tool we have, as architect´s to make our imaginarium speak in a preety much relatable way to all. It attracts me the moment, like someone who captures a moment in a picture, we can pursue to do so, with our preety own expression and point of view.

As the title can say, seen from the sky. We consider it a hobbie, and were surprised sometimes, to find some of the buildings we grew on loving and admiring, and realising, that it surroundings and sites were not of our deep understanding and knowledge. We can say, this brings, as a tool, a complementary and important way of looking at the masterpieces, left from the great Master´s. Visit us at our Facebook page, im preety sure it will be a pleasant time for architecture lover´s.

Yet another Blog created with my friend, Hélder Monteiro. The concept behind this was to make some creative and visually appealing images, with the premises of decontextualizing some works that we preety much admire and follow. Mixing, architecture, with cinema, with a vivid context. This is also an hobbie we dedicate not so much time as we would like too. Once again i invite you to visit our humble manifest on art and expression through our architectural formation, via facebook. Architectural Decontextualization.

“A vida é essencialmente Vontade e Movimento: e naquele pedaço de terra, plantado de milho, vai todo um mundo de impulsos, de forças que se revelam, e que atingem a sua expressão suprema, que é a forma.” QUEIRÓS, Eça - A cidade e as serras, 1901
