Architecture begins where engineering ends. Walter Gropius

Program The project focuses on a creative, but concrete design in celebrating and understanding the election of 2012. The center for undecided voters (CUV) which is located amidst the lively neighborhoods of West Broad street provides important information about the Mitt Romney and Barrack Obama campaign. As the election campaign progresses, the CUV will develop into a voting center through the use of temporary furniture.

The concept for the design of the CUV is to mimic the encasing effect of politicians. Politicians can be friendly and polite but often at times we are manipulated by their words. The translucent curvilinear panels divides multiple spaces and initiates an order of hierarchy between spaces. The translucent panel runs throughout the space, tying spaces together and naturally separates the private spaces from the public. In addition it also acts as a ceiling design for designated areas.

One of the great beauties of architecture is that each time, it is like life starting all over again. Renzo Piano

Program The design of this interior office allows you to be submerged into a traditional space, that fuses contemporary designs in order to bring out the essence of creative freedom. Trendwatching.com is an online creative business that focuses on bringing people the latest trend and design products. So by using ‘solid vs void’ as my concept for the design of this office space, I manipulated a cubic form to form a grid like structure with thin, metal pipes that contains LED light bulbs. Those drop down from the wooden grids to emphasis the importance of certain areas.

Form follows function – that has been misunderstood. Form and function should be one, joined in a spiritual union. Frank Loyd Wright

Program Believing that interior spaces play a critical role in the development of students. The Richmond Youth and culture center is designed to captivate and encourage students to collaborate and interact with each other while they are learning. The facility is programmed as an education center and a thinking tank to make learning fun for students and teenagers.

After studying the light paths and circulation of the exisiting building. The final concept idea for my design was about ‘Filtration can be understood in a number of ways; for example we can see that natural light penetrates the building from various directions. Light can be filtered by different materials and also by each floor level. Filtration can also be understood from a circulation stand point. The diagrams on the left shows the filtration of people on each floor level and how they connect and interact with different groups of people. The third type of ‘filtration’ can be understood as the types of activities that people experience while they are in the Youth Center, and since my aim is to combine education with socialization among students and teenagers, I thought about introducing book shelves in the space and using the book shelves as a main focus for my concept.
