A THESIS PROJECT
REVISITING THE CONTAINER THROUGH THE BODY: RE-CODING WORK-SPACE IN BKC Looking at the work-space that is BKC through the idea of a working and desiring body and hence reconfiguring the idea of an office to see how the body, city and the workspace can work as one space.

inconspicuous, Light doesn’t need to come from the outside; When he can have a controlled one from inside. He faces the others, but never the outside The ones who are outside can see right through him and the others, But they can never be a part of them. The elevators are hidden deep within the heart of the structure, They grow ever so tall. At the very top, where everything only seems lighter, the focus lies on the distant horizon; what is near remains a blur. The air is controlled up above within the chambers of our glass towers they tell him he is guarded from the toxic fumes that spread down below. But he feels his body, weak and sick He is contained.

CONTAINMENT AND CONTROL OF HUMAN MIND AND SENSES

Current trends of office complexes are looked at as the modern way of accommodating work spaces and housing its often termed ‘machinic workers’.
Flows
After the transition in the capitalist development since the 70s, the idea of efficiency is one of the major focus of the new lifestyle. Very little space is being left behind for transgression of the body in space. Negligible design thought is oriented around the idea of the human body in space.
Technology has networked the mind, placing a new system with a new type of architecture for us to flow through, which in turn shapes how we think. So, where does that leave the sensing body?
Evoke the sensorial part of the spatial experience that remains detached from the office spaces
Play
There has been an eccentric rise in white collar jobs post liberalization in 1990s. Yet the architecture of work has not evolved beyond simple furniture configurations, slab on slab construction as the only outcome of increasing density and high rise glass facades with no relationship to its surroundings.
“The relationship between architecture and the human body delves deep into why those behaviors manifest in the first place, as it calls upon the experiential characteristics and qualities that spark when the two unite — impacting not only occupant behavior through the body, but also impacting occupants intellectually, e m o t i o n a l l y , physiologically and even spiritually through the body as well.”
How can city play an active part within the office complex ?
To see current trends of office production and work towards preparing a different lens of building by reconfiguring elements of the office and its relationship to the city and its public.

Intent
The body becomes a passive version of itself in the city : functions separate like organs
To understand or look at the human body within the city
The ‘architecture of work’ especially ignores the body with senses. The design of workplace misses to realize the living needs of the human body while perfectly serving to the functional needs of an office employee(robot) Buildings are also imagined as large objects devoid of any service to the greater totality of the city.

What if the core remained on the skin of the building ? What if it was not looked at as an ugly space, used only for circulation ? What if it became an object of pleasure ?
Skin Can the skin go beyond transparency of glass ?

Threshold What if the workspace can be an integrated system of finger like projections that hover above each other and allow healthy interaction. What if the workspace worked as a balcony, that extended beyond the facade ?

The Diagrams explore the city that is BKC, in its purest form. Broken down into what it projects onto its visitors. The ordered everyday, and the containers they are kept in. The transparency in the facades fail to comfort and provide visual pleasure on site. Far from the organic growth of the city around it. BKC blossoms in between it all, growing ever so tall.
The vertical transition in most shells/containers is a conversion of the lively , dynamic city streets into a banal introverted non stimulating,passive and linear circulation.

Introducing some Hybridity
An office building that allows the city and public come in, to become a part of it, is the aim. Such a building breathes with a thin skin that wraps itself around the office and allows for better exchanges to occur . A large stomach occupies itself in the middle of the building making itself a prominent void that exposes circulation around the structure and promotes interaction with all levels of workspace and public functions.
A cavity is formed within the form. This cavity is outlined by the public functions.

The workspace resembles the cellular projections seen in the diagram. It projects the idea of a constant moment of transition in which things want to move out and come in and the organism allows for it to do so.

RE-CODING THROUGH FORM/SHIFTING LAYOUT
Though BKC being in the center of the city it remains cut off from the city, accessible by the four/two wheelers and very few pedestrian pathways. The plot marked at the edge of BKC serves as the site as it was chosen to be a gateway into BKC from the Kurla side. Close to the railway station the site proves to have ample opportunities for enabling and constructing a new flow through the complex and other pedestrian activities which otherwise remains in-acknowledged and commonly traveled towards by an automobile.

Option 1 The library bar is the prime focus of this space which is offset with the use of a turquoise tinted epoxy floor. The blue is a recurring motif in this option,appearing in the tile clad on the bar front as well as the paint finish on the window frames.
Option 2 Tiles have been used as accents throu g h o ut the space, highlighting the arched niches and accentuating the window openings. The trusses have been painted the Shizusan shade of red and the same color has been used as accents in linings around the space.

In 2015 , the kumbh comes to Nashik after 12 years. with people in numbers ranging from 20-30 million visiting the city for a period of 60 days, the city will have to organize and deploy systems that maintain order within this chaos, an important part of which is a pop up city , with an infrastructure enough to support 1015 million for around 50 days. consisting of tents,
public spaces ,clinics , police stations and various other temporary public structures, this city is elemental to the functioning of the Kumbh.

Balconies provide access to the exterior for floors above ground level. Yet, because of the elevated position, balconies remain removed and partially hidden from the environment below. The default role on a balcony is as an observer, while those below automatically become the observed. How might the design of a balcony embrace this oneway interaction? How can a balcony maintain a prominent presence on the facade while simultan-eously concealing an observer? What materials and forms would enhance the ability to track, record, and/or magnify the observed? What happens when balconies begin to spy?

Sensitivity towards nature evokes the sense of protection like a mother cares for a child. Through the act of growing, one rediscovers a new kindness with which one looks at the site and allows visitors to engage with it in this process. To generate a sense of purity and rejuvenate the site by harnessing life and protection. With the intent of taking care, preservation occurs.
Why the test tubes ? Relationship with man and nature is explored in the process of revealing the earth through the use of transparent test tubes. SUSTAINIBILITY AND THE RUIN In the basic understanding of sustainability ,the ‘ruin’ becomes the most sustainable architectural entity . The ruin exists forever in a state of adaptation and evolves different programs and uses over time,ranging from being a space of play to becoming the place where events are held,it sustains itself by adapting to the changing needs of the user and becomes timeless. The proposal is a structure which acts as a beacon for the festival,but has the potential to eventually degrade,decay and take up different roles over time.

an institution project SEM6,3RD YR.|2013 The healing center sitting amongst a few trees on site becomes a pavilion like grove,providing shelter to the patients seeking refuge in the time of need. The building breaks away from conventional single corridor institutions ,allowing multiplicity and variety in experience for all kinds of users to interact within. The building forms its own pubic space by wrapping around a large open space. The continuous steps around the plinths becomes a gradual transition in the porous nature of the building.

MONUMENT TO FAITH Yuksom, Sikkim
Bath-house SEM4,2ND YR.|2013 Buddhists express intangible ideas of faith through tangible mediums. Sacred flags,prayer wheels,chants etc sit all over the landscape of Sikkim and constantly blend with elements of nature,almost becoming natural themselves. The Public bath is created to involve tourists and local inhabitants in the sacred landscape of the Baayul demazong in Sikkim. It is not an intervention of special attention but aims to become a part of the everyday,natural in a way and timeless in the sense of purpose. The intervention sits next to the existing boundaries of the sacred grove,extending out to the valley on the other side. the bath intends to become an everyday object of faith, that becomes a ritual.
