MAKING A SPLASH WITH COLOUR Preparing a home for sale can call on all your DIY skills, and even earn you a few new ones! One of the most commonly asked questions when sprucing up an otherwise presentable home is “What colours should we paint the rooms?” Common sense dictates that sticking to a neutral palette is important – white or beige are often prescribed as they are certainly “safe”. You certainly can’t go wrong with this approach, but it can sometimes remove any warmth, and every home has a different feel. Some are light, some are cosy, some have a lot of open plan space and bare walls! best look a home for sale should have is one that inspires a sense of calm, warmth and space. When a home is painted in colours that create a calming influence, buyers will want to linger in them longer allowing them to envisage their own furnishings and personal belongings in the space you are trying to sell. If the colours are harsh, overbearing or unusual, the brain reacts in a way similar to the “fight or flight” syndrome – not an ideal response! The same can happen when rooms have no personality and feel cold and empty. Or when every room is painted in a different colour. It’s fine to use neutral colours for walls, ceilings and woodwork. The accent colours however should be used sparingly. The safest way to use accent colours is through things like accessories and window treatments. Consider those colours on cushions, artwork and throws. If you start painting walls with an accent colour, you may inadvertently cause the room to appear to be closed in. If you want to create an accent wall to highlight a fireplace for example, then select a colour two or three shades lighter or darker from the same wall colour. This allows the desired feature to have prominence without closing in the room. Try selecting a piece designer fabric that you like from a modern design shop and use it as the “base” for colours throughout the house. Use shades of the fabric colours (either lighter or darker) in different rooms. For example if you want a bedroom to have a bit of colour, use one of the colours on that same fabric sample. If the colour seems strong, tone it down using a much tamer version. (Match it on the colour strip and go lighter by four or five shades.) One piece of fabric can be your guide to painting the whole interior of your house. The overall appearance will be one of continuity, spaciousness and good taste. Craig J.
