There are numerous design styles to draw inspiration from when choosing a theme for a room or home. The best place to start is by looking at styles that appeal to you and also suit your budget and lifestyle. Interior design magazines and online resources are full of fantastic ideas and very easy to access. With so many popular styles to choose from it’s a good idea to focus on three or four styles rather than exploring every single option - it can become a little overwhelming and confusing especially of you are a first time decorator! And pick a theme or themes that will blend well with the style of home. For example, a cottage theme will look out of place in a modern warehouse apartment where as a sleek contemporary style will work very well.

Here are a few of the current styles to consider: Asian - This style showcases the cultures of Japan, China and other Eastern countries. The strong themes are bold colours and ornate furniture with red often the dominant colour. Natural and floral themes also run through this style of interior decoration. Contemporary - Clean, streamlined and modern, the contemporary style uses minimal colour with black, white and neutral colours dominating. Occasionally with a brightly coloured feature wall or piece of furniture will be included. Cottage - This is an uncomplicated and romantic look that incorporates the shabby chic style of interior decorating. French provincial - Ornate furniture popular during the reign of Louis XV is toned down for the French provincial look. Colours from the French countryside such as yellows, greens and blues prevail.
