Marion Weiss Michael Manfredi Teamate: Bo Zhang

What will happen when two utopian design in the history meet each other and get new life from each other? When we combine the web in Berlin Free University and the hierarchy in Lower Manhattan Expressway, we find something new about the hybrid which can grow on the existing campus node on Kendall Square, MIT.

Pedestrian ways link new development within the corridor to surrounding districts. At the intersection of all three segments of the corridor is the hub, centered on Chrystie and Delancey Street. The present character of the corridor ranges from active, mixed residential-commercial neighborhoods to underutilized light industrial districts mixed with some loft-type housing. Along the Williamsburg and Brooklyn Bridge approaches, which become very important and highly developed parts of the study area, there is currently little development. Similarly, the approaches to the Holland tunnel, now open, wasted areas in the city, are recognized as new opportunities.

To introduce the idea of Analogue Architecture into a design practice. We try to get the right design for the present time and the location. We introduce the image of a tree into this building and use it as a prototype of our structure to recreate an atmoshere which can represent an idea life of study in a campus context. Connecting the latest interactive technology with the basic architecture idea together to get something new but belong to this place and time.

The Terrace Cultural and Art Center Gulou district, Nanjing, China 2012 Tutor : Chen Yu

I use terrace as the prototype to act in cooperation with the Beijige Mountain north to the art center and correspond with the complex relationship in site. Instead of a cultural center which seems not accessible to ordinary citizens, a big public platform offering all kinds of possiblities is preferred.

Body mass isometric drawings display from the initial blocks in orthogonal system that is difficult to determine a clear direction to the curves that act in cooperation with the complex relationship in the site. With the layered form still retained, at the same time to meet the Cultural and Art Center's functional requirements for a large space, the function and body are evolved on the base of layer. Fused space is formed by superposition, intersection and fusion between layers to fulfill the functional demands. Meanwhile in terms of form, every layer has a particular function area that corresponds with it.

3000 Seats + 3000 Bikes Movie Theatre for Golden Orange Movie Festival Antalya, Turkey, 2015 Tutor : Teamate:

Sulan Kolatan Eda Yeyman

Antalya together with its natural features has so many attraction points for tourists as well as local people. Having big altitude differences between the sea level and the mountains, rivers and great coastal areas are some of the richness of Antalya and it naturally provides some activities for outdoor sports such as biking, hiking, trekking, rafting...which is also a way of viewing and experiencing those natural features and spaces. However, the green areas in the urban area which seemed to be public spaces are mostly not accessible -because they are agricultural areas or they belong to the hotels in the coastal zone which makes them private spaces. Our project intends to encourage outdoor sports by providing spaces for them in the urban areas combined with various ways of viewing for both local people and tourists. Paths surrounding the theatre spaces, a landscape and closed spaces will provide non-stationary sports such as biking and running; golfing, skating and also the stationary ones, which will be mainly an alternative for the actual sports; Wii games. Each sport will be combined with a way of viewing and different kinds of films such as; stop motion, trailer, short film, long film. The space will be accessible 24/7 and will consist of rentable spaces for groups and gaming. Ecological gaming is also a part of the concept and some areas in the landscape will be assigned for that purpose. For that purpose, the curves, cracks and cells also provides habitats for local animals and plants.

Overall Form Ornament -- Special architectural element Transition and contrast of the patterns on the facade The richness of different units and details The curved details and changing patterns show something different from generic tower in NYC

Interior Space Facade units transit from individual units to the public space smoothly. Some facade elements go inside and become ornament details for the interior space.

The whole model is made by more than 20 different types of unit. Each of them has seperated and unique interior parts. They can be stacked together with different exterior qualities. Those small units act more like facade patterns. While those larger openings act as windows or balconies. The spiky units are the rooftop windows and collect light into the interior building.

A Dream of Time Leapers urban and architecture design on the basis of heritage protection, Yuyan, Nanjing 8-week project, 2013 Tutor:

Chen Wei Shi Fei Teammate: Yuping Xu Gang Wu

There is always a dream in the heart of every Chinese. We just want to offer a place for them to be a time leaper in an old and less developed area. To break the barrier of time and the gap between wealth and poverty, architecture should act as the bridge.

City Made of Xuan Paper urban design of Wanling Lake district, Xuancheng, Anhui 8-week project, 2012

partner: Shi Tianyue tutor: Han Dongqing Li Biao A city which is the process of making xuan paper itself tries to recall the memory of an ancient Chinese culture in a new way of presentation.

The site is located in Xuancheng, Anhui Province. As the entrance of Xuancheng city, the district to be designed represents the image of the city. The site is just beside the biggest lake in Xuancheng city -- Wangling Lake, which is the north end of the green axis of the city.

Xuancheng is famous as the birthplace of xuan paper, a kind of paper which is widely used in ancient China. Xuan paper is soft and permeable, so the ink can reprensent unique effects on xuan paper according to the amount of water in the ink. As the most important element to produce xuan paper of high-quality and make full use of xuan paper’s characteristics, water is of vital importance both to represent the feature of xuan paper and to represent the Xuancheng City. Thus, in this design, in consideration of the relation and continuity of the environment of the city. We create a new water system which canserve as the clue to the whole process of making xuan paper.

In section, shift of floors provides private space for each family.

Compared with traditional residential houses which rely on a single yard to provide light and space for activities, in this design one yard is shared by two families on different heights.

Built on a site which has a lot of height differences, this design makes use of the existing differences and create different open space.

The Pilgrimage memorial center, Pipa Lake , Nanjing 8-week project, 2011 Tutor : Deng Hao

Peom is the reflection of the flower in the poet's mind and can usually show not only the physical features of the flower but the feeling of the poet to others. A memorial center is a place to represent the idea of architects and leads the prayers to communicate via architecture.

Pilgrims not only exist and should not only exist in religious cases. In the face of nature, perhaps each of us should be with a sort of consious reverence, not only need to repent for the past, but also pray for the future.

The generation of continuous spacial sequence is the process of mental baptism. When the "Living Machine" of humans is placed in a natural environment, the relationship between them actually should be defined by the user of the building.

Entrance Roof terrace: Conform to the height change of the slope, always in the outdoor environment, one end directly faces the transportation, the other end directly faces the open space of the lake.

Entrance Hall

Entrance hall: Conform to the natural terrain and sink from the natural environment, light becoming dim, and lead people from the ease natural environment to serious and heavy memorial place Exhibition Roof terrace: Waterfront platform rich in variance of height, close to shallow part of VIP lounge roof pool, and also in the direct line of sight view of the lake, makes people feel relaxed.

Lecture

Exhibition: Long dark curved road and the only dim light at the port, give people confused and repressed feelings. Resting area: At the highest point of the water-near platform, also the end of the grand ladder on the roof, has a good vision, meanwhile is a space node.

Resting & Discussing Area

Resting area: Travel a long path in the dark, and suddenly come to a bright open space. The view of walls and the lake makes people feel relaxed both physically and mentally before their later "pilgrimage". The Grand Ladder Grand Ladder: The two parts of upper and lower staircase, share the same form, but give different feelings. The upper part is in a natural environment, open, close to nature; the lower part is enclosed in the room, dimly lit, highlighting the sacred and mysterious atmosphere.

Ceremonial Hall, Ceremonial Field: Similar to the two ladders, the dim light in the Ceremonial Hall makes people meditate. The open space of the Ceremonial Field broadens people’s eye sight suddenly. Accompanied by light from the Ceremonial Field, the Ceremonial Hall in terms of the flow line will serve as a place to wake up people then make them rethink and meditate.
