Color As Character Process Book DE309 Fall 2020 Jasmine Hui
THE PROJECT Color as Character was a four week project in the Illustration Media class at Cornish College of the Arts. I created two spreads for a children’s book that would introduce children aged four- to six-years to dim sum culture with a mix of written Cantonese and English words. My goal for this book is that it would help parents teach useful Cantonese words and phrases to their children. I hope you’ll enjoy seeing my process throughout this project!
The counter for dim sum dishes is
lung4 This means “bamboo steamer.
So when you order dishes, you should ask for “one bamboo steamer of shrimp dumplings, please.

In Cantonese, eating dim sum is called
yam2
cha4
This means “drinking tea.
Tea is important and everyone shares a pot of tea when eating dim sum. But don’t fill a cup of tea to the very top or it will be too hot to hold!
