One of the most important things in life is to be where you choose, and make it work from there. This determined mindset has held true for Surface and the members of the collaboration for years, and for some of us, a lifetime. As years go by, the things that keep us here become even more precious and sacred. For us, that sacred spot is Salt Lake City and the mountains that surround it. On any given day, the environment can determine how your day will unfold. A phone call can lead to a day in the park at PC, dawn patrol in Little Cottonwood, or non-stop shakas in Brighton with your best buddies. The city and surrounding mountains are the perfect place to plant Surface roots. Deep snow, unique terrain and like-minded individuals make SLC the ultimate stomping grounds. It is priceless for us to interact on a daily basis with the same people that pound nails all summer, saving for a season pass, a pair of skis and enough money to, hopefully, get them through March without working. These are the individuals that inspire Surface to drive forward.

Dude! It’s no wonder why people that ski the 3 Stage Rocker by Surface continually have better days on the mountain than when riding their other skis. Why? Because our 3 Stage Rocker is just that...3 stages of progression under your feet. Stage one is a continuous contact which makes the ski level through the bindings, allowing you to hold an edge without catching one. LIVE LIFE The Live Life for the 2009-2010 season got a bit of a makeover. We added a couple centimeters to the length and refined the early rise in the tip, making it a smoother transition from underfoot to the rocker point. The DirectionalTapered shape maximizes float and comes around more easily than most big mountain skis in its class. Equipped with a full Poplar Wood Core from tip-totail, the Live Life is bombproof but still extremely light for backcountry travel. With that being said, continue to Live Life to the fullest.

GREEN LIFE Realizing the effects that producing a ski has on our environment, Surface has partnered with The Lodge and American Forests to reverse some of the harm that our lifestyle puts on the planet. For 2009, Surface will plant 10 trees for every pair of Green Life skis sold. That could end up providing enough trees to create a forest within itself. We all know that most skis require wood, which comes from, yep you guessed it... trees. We will go out on a limb here and say our goal is to plant 1,000 trees in 2009. Do good!

Artist Interview LIMITED ARTIST EDITION: Jeff Brown Name, Age, Current location: Jeff Brown, 24, Layton, UT What got you into the mountain life being from Alabama? I was over everything that was going on with school/life and for some reason decided to quit school and make a drastic change in my life. Why did you decide to make Jackson Hole your new choice for living? Well, after I quit school, my friend Jack called and convinced me to move to Jackson, which I had no idea that snow and mountains were involved until the night before I left when I saw a Travel Channel special. The whole move was kind of done because I was bummed out and had nothing better to do, but it turned out to be the scariest and best thing I’ve done for myself. It was hard to leave my family and friends for a place far away that I wasn’t even sure I’d like, but I honestly think I would be in a bad place if I didn’t. Thanks mom and dad for the support on that one. What was it that got you into creating art, and what/who are your inspirations? I’ve always liked to draw as a kid, mostly on my book covers and folders at school, then I took a crappy underfunded art class one semester in high school called “Creative Crafts” and that got me more into it. I think moving out to Jackson got me more into it as a means of mentally escaping the long lonely winters before I got in to playing in the snow. As far as influences go, the early ones were definitely the likes of Wynne Dawson, Opie Ortiz(The guy that did all of Sublime’s Art), Alex Grey, Ralph Steadman. Nowadays, Jay Eichhorst, Tony Birkholz, Matt Beringer, Shelley Thompson, Jen Harper, Boogie, Mike Sieben and really anyone that loves to do their own thing, there’s so many good artists out there now it crazy. Music has a huge influence on me, probably the biggest. How do you balance you life now with work and what do you do for a job? I’ve worked since I was 14, so I’ve just always ridden my bike when I had time and I usually draw at night before I go to bed more or less as a means to relax my mind. As far as work goes it’s pretty random right now, I’m at UPS until Christmas and I’ve been going back and forth to Jackson to fill in at my old job as a bagel baker and after that, who knows. You shoot a lot of photography, particularly with a Holga. Can you elaborate on how you got into taking photos and what’s your favorite thing to shoot? I really got into it when my parents bought me a cheap point and shoot for Christmas about 4 years ago and that spring I went to the Oregon/ Washington coast for the first time and was so blown away by the beauty that I’ve been taking photos ever since and I love it. Just traveling around the West got me inspired and it still does. I just got into shooting Holga about 2 months ago because I think you told me about it, and after shooting so much digital, that instant gratification is gone with film, and especially Holgas because they are so crappy and inconsistent that when a roll turns out, it’s like Christmas come early. As far as subject matter, I like shooting everything, just whatever inspires me, mainly landscapes and bmx, music show are probably the most fun though. When you start a drawing how do you decide what to draw, or do you just let it happen and see what comes out of it? 95% of the time I just start drawing and see what happens happen, because when I try to draw something in particular it turns out like crap, so I just turn on music, relax and start going at it and if I don’t like I keep messing with it until I do. I kind of get lost in it and forget about everything else. Have you had any shows? Only 2, one was at a bike shop in Driggs Idaho about 4 years ago and one was 2 summers ago in Jackson and it was a community show. I had a show lined up in Salt Lake last winter and then backed out because I got nervous, I get kind of shy when it comes to putting my stuff out there. Where can we expect to see more of your art and photography? I have a Flickr site, and as far as art work goes I don’t really know, I really want to do a mixed show with photos and drawings some day, but I’ll probably just keep sketching out on shows, maybe someday though. I just want to keep it fun for me and if other people see it and enjoy it, that’s awesome. What’s Ginger-vitus? It’s also known as “redhead problems” It’s pretty much a disease that makes you have red hair and sensitive to the sun, fortunately for me I’m a day-walker, which means I can handle minimal contact with the sun. Common symptoms include: upset stomach, fiery temper, and strange anti-social behavior to name a few. So if you know someone afflicted with this disease, you may want to just have them put to sleep. Are you planning on making any trips this winter and where are you heading? Up to Jackson for a few weeks to work and after that, a trip to Southern Utah for a desert hiking/photo trip to the Paria River Wilderness, that’s it until something else pops up. Please introduce yourself: Adam Clark, born in SLC, shooting for 12 years (quit 13 jobs, lost a few girlfriends, racked up $23,000 in credit card debt heli skiing, owned 9 camera’s, ski a lot of days every winter) still live in SLC. How did you get into photography? I was given a camera while on vacation in Alaska by some dentists from Florida. Senior year in high school, got a job washing dishes at the Rustler Lodge at Alta, tried a semester of collage, quit, went back to the Rustler Lodge at Alta, got fired from the Rustler, decided I better make photography work. Now it works. So I started shooting skiing with a camera from Florida that was in Alaska to shoot whales. I still have the camera, even though I don’t use it. With Utah having such an amazing scene who do you mostly chill/ski with on a regular basis? I live with Julian Carr and Taylor. Taylor’s dog, Duke, is a Basset Hound and I probably spend more time with him than just about anybody, we chill a lot. He sleeps 17 hours a day. The Surface office is a 5 minute bike ride from my house, so I always try to get them to buy me lunch. If I don’t have anybody to shoot with I can just hang out at the bottom of a ski lift and somebody who shreds will show up, there are sooooo many good skiers here. Its awesome!! With all the work you have going on, where do you pull inspiration from and who do you look up to in photography? It’s sounds cliche, but my inspiration are the mountains and the people that live and work in the mountains. I really like spending time in the mountains. I can shoot the same location 100 times and it can always be different. Being a major player in the ski industry, you get to deal with a lot of different companies. And I think it’s safe to say there is a huge variance in companies’ images. Some are really nice and clean while others are all over the place. Would you agree with that and how do you view it overall? Major Player! That sounds nice, I should start charging more. Every company is branded different, its awesome to work with companies that really appreciate art and photography and have a clear focus with the kind of photos they want to use. Especially when they are open to new ideas. What’s been one of the most stand-out things that has ever happened to you while shooting? Skiing 5000 feet of perfect AK powder with friends. Who do you enjoy shooting the most? Anything that makes me laugh. When shooting, do you prefer film or digital? I love digital, lots of love for it. But I just started shooting film again. I shoot 12 shot rolls, it usually takes me a few days to shoot a roll. So I really think about every shot and then develop it and scan it. The shots are awesome and Its a nice perspective on photography. Instead of the usual blasting of thousands of digi shots. What’s your current photo set-up like? Canon 1D Mark III, a fisheye, 24-105, 16-35, 70-200, and a 580 flash. Thats my everyday setup. I have lights, big lenses, point and shoots, but 90% of the time I just have that same setup. Is there something in your camera bag that most photographers normally wouldn’t have? Extra goggles since everybody seems to forget to bring extra goggles. And I try to remember chocolate, that can really come in handy.
