Hi there!
My name is Jason Chen, a industrial designer based
in Taipei, Taiwan. I posses a charming personality and a fierce hunger of learning new knowledge and skills. Having lived in the U.S.A. for a third of my life and traveled throughout europe and parts of asia, my eyes have opened to a broader aspect of the world, merging my eastern heritage and western upbringing of aesthetics and values.
Equipped with the skill set acquired during my edu-
cation, I am confident and thrilled when faced with different design challenges. From forming concepts either by myself or with a team, to understanding the mindset of the consumer and executing the design.
Although a major in primarily product design, I also
like to test myself in areas such as architechture and vehicle design. This portfolio is a culmination of my work, showing my passion and appreciation for the world and wanting to make it a better place.

Drink to the World
We live in a world where the distance between people and nations are getting closer and closer each day, and
having a sense of cameraderie for people from different countries and cultures has never been more important. The most common way to get to know people is still the process of sitting down and having a few drinks with them, alcholic or not. Only through truly listening and exchanging experiences can we really understand each other. So let's all raise a glass, and drink to the world.
10
Drinking to the world is a set of coasters with landmarks of various countries around the world surrounded by the nations flag in three corners. The coasters themselves are hexagon in shape, and can be fitted together in any formation, thus also making it available for larger wares such as bowls and pots. Each coaster is connected using magnets.
11
12
Each piece is cutted from wood using a laser cutter. After cutted each piece is hand-painted and glued together using resin, with cavities carved on the inside to make space for the magnets. This set includes the Eiffel tower of France, Mount Fuji of Japan, Palace guards of Britain, the leaning tower of Pisa in Italy, the blue white building along the Aegean Sea in Greece, and the Taipei 101 in Taiwan. The packaging is designed after a parcel that fits six coasters as a set. Perfect for gifts to friends old and new.

Soar through Shadows
As a school with a notable design department, it would only be fitting that Tatung University have an unique
sign at their entrance. Playing with light and shadows, a sign is designed with different characteristic in day and night. It serves as a encouragement to students to always persist and perservere in times of adversity.
14
In the daytime, the sign has the golden words “Tatung
University surronded with sillouhettes of birds flying around the words. When night falls, lights at the left of the sign turns on and a shadow is cast along the sign, and the flying birds come together to form the head of our school mascot, the night heron.

Flowing to the East
Showering is an everyday ritual that everyone performs, and showerheads comes in all shapes and sizes.
Flowing to the East combines natural flowing water with the reliefing comfort of spas.
17
The form concept of Flowing to
the East derives from traditional Chinese window panes. I have always find to be intricately beautiful, and have long viewed it as a hallmark of eastern culture. So when it came to coming up with a showerhead with eastern influence, these window panes were one of the first things that came to my mind.
18
Oringally there were two design that were favored, one (top)
came in the form of a rectangular whirl. The wide design allows for full coverage of the body when showering, this was designed with the elderly people in mind. Whenever they turn in the shower, there is always the risk of slipping. This design lets get full body coverage without having to twist and turn, lowering the risk of injury.
The second one doesn’t boosts as much body coverage but
has keeps water from splashing onto your face, and with benifit of different modes of showering.
19
In the end the two types of showers were
combined into the form of the traditional Chinese window panes. The cross and bent part acts as the spa sprinkler and the straight part the waterfall. All three parts as controlled seperately, so the cross part can be shut off to avoid splashing water in the face and at the same time still maintaining full body cov-

The conventional toaster is oftentimes very cumbersome and can only toast two slices of bread at the same time. The lack of interaction during breakfast has left many people to neglect and sometimes skip the most important meal of the day. Through Toast Stamp I wish to change the way we eat our toast, making breakfast into a fun and engaging meal. Everyone is a artist, stamping and printing their creativity onto the toast. As you start your day with a spark of creativity, everything will seem more alive, filling you with energy
23
The heater can heat up the stamps seperately, as the required temperature is reached, the lights turn green. Using the handle, one only has to align the slots and twist to lock handle and stamp together for use. The colored part of the stamp acts as a heat repellent, protecting the hand from burns. As you press the stamp onto the slice of bread, the toast is done and you have a great work of art before you to start the day!

In modern times the smart phone and other smart devices have become a irreplaceable part of our lives. Yet with electronics also comes with the problem of sufficient power. often times we find ourselves at the mercy of our devices because of the loss of power. But what if we can harness the energies created from our body
26
27
Portelectric uses thermalelectric technology to harness the heat from our body to produce electricity. By using Peltier tiles and merging them with the shoulder straps that are on our bags, which comes in direct contact with our bodies. The padding cushions on the straps are heat-absorbing. There will be USB ports on the side and bottom of the straps that allow for charging on the go. Through this product, the excess heat that usually goes to waste can finally be put to good use and at the same time, save energy consumption.

Winds of Caution Often times when we are in public spaces such as airpots and shopping malls, the floors can be damp due to maintenace cleaning. The conventional method is to put up a sign saying caution to people who pass by. But simply putting a sign does not solve the problem of slipping wet floors. Through warning people and drying the same time, Winds of Caution solves the problem at its roots.
31
There are two models that are controlled seperately, providing flexibility of usage. Each mode has 4 different stages of intensity to choose from. Utilizing the same charging method as the electric toothbrush, therefore preventing water from leaking into the machine and damaging the circuits during charging.
32
Winds of Caution combines the caution sign with a conventional fan at the bottom part of the sign. The fan draws air from the holes on the side and blows out from the air vents on the bottom. It opens at an 360 degree angle, so no matterwhere you place it, it can reach everywhere. The Winds of Caution has two features that can be controlled seperately, the warning light and the fan, which allows for maximum usage flexibility.

Taiwan, a land known for its unique and beautiful mountain ranges. Every year tourists and locals alike flock to these mountains to take in the breath-taking views. Yet among this beauty lies hidden dangers such as mud slides during heavy rain due to bad soil retention. The government have placed retaining walls all along the mountain side, but while these walls may serve their purpose, they lack in beauty and disrupt the view of the mountain side. I wish to change the way we retain mountains by merging man-made structures and nature. Making the walls into the shape of trees and at the same time pl ant trees in the walls. As the trees grow it can reinforce the mountain sides with the concrete wall, hence creating a man-made strucuture in harmony with nature itself.
35
Issue & Concept
A lot of the times mud slides happen because the soil retention is not properly maintained, causing the mountain side to shift when heavy rain falls. These mudslides are extremely hazardous to residents in the the mountain area and travelers along the road. With these disasters being such a major problem, the government has erected walls all over and along the mountain side, yet a lot of times these walls tend to destroy the scenic view of the mountains.
36
For this project I wanted the site to be the beautiful sea side mountain roads of Su Hua road. This road is famous for it’s amazing sea side and mountain views. Yet beacuse of its location there are many hazards. I want to make this place safe for everyone and still maintaining it’s beauty. The project will run along the coast line for aprox. 100 km.

These are the four types of typical retaining walls. I want to encorporate the anchored wall and the cantilever wall combined with the form the trees.

The retaining wall still posses the basic structures of typical retaining walls, with extending canopies . The overhanging canopies are in the shape of braches that are made of steel that allows sunlight to shine through. Trees are planted in the middle of the road. As these tree grow and mature, they reinforce the entire structure. The supports are in the shape of branches cut into sections.
39
The wall uses a transparent concrete along with ordinary concrete. This allows the light to shine through the tunnel and provide better visibility. The wall uses a transparent concrete along with ordinary concrete. This allows the light to shine through the tunnel and provide better visibility.

Svelto E Motorcycle With the global population on the rise, the use of gasoline vehicles goes hand in hand with growth of the population. Everyday tons of green house gases are released in the atmosphere, severely damaging our planet. But what if instead of fossil fuels we use electricity to power our transportation devices? Svelto provides an alternative way to our daily commute in the city, zero-emissions, silent, and agile.
42
43
Issue & Concept
According to the disturbution of motorbikes in the world, Asian
countries take up to 50% or more. Because of the rapid increase of income and development in these countries, motorbikes become more and more widespread among the people, but with it comes the rise of carbon emissions, which in turn speeds up global warming, causing havoc on the enviroment.
The setting of use is in the future, where people are
more enviromently consience, and the use of fossil fuel is a fading memory. This electric motorcycle is designed with entrepreneurs, designers, and artist in mind, providing them a futuristic and eco-friendly ride, letting the explorers of society lead us into the future of clean energy.
44
Svelto uses lithium batteries as it's power source, with the body housing the batteries, providing ample power for long range riding through the city on one charge.
45
Fo r m D e s i g n Initially the shape of the head leaned towards a more squared shape, but I wanted to include the form of the sabres into the bike, so the shape becam more streamlined. Since this was a electric bike, the possibilities for the side were endless, in the end the side became an extension of the head and merging with the seat and motor.

We first went and accquire all the necessary parts, from the batteries, motor, and the
bits and pieces of the motorbike. After all the parts are purchased, we discussed the design for the frame with the motorcycle custom shop. After the frame is finished we put all the parts together. For the outer shell we use wooden sections of our shape and stuff it with styrofoam and gradually shape out the shell, after the shape is complete we cover it with a layer of foil tape and then we cover it with fiber glass. After the fiber glass is smoothed and polished, it is then spray painted. Finally we assemble everything and turn on the bike.
