EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS

Power Outages

With the onset of the nicer weather comes the increased possibility of severe storms to occur in our area. Severe storms such as Thunderstorms, Lightning, High Winds, Heavy Rains, Hail, and Tornadoes can develop quickly and threaten life and property and they can occur in any region of Canada during all seasons. In addition to the many impacts that may be experienced to buildings and infrastructure in a community, power outages resulting from such storm activity may pose several challenges for residents. Most power outages can be over as quickly as they happen, but some will last much longer.

DID YOU KNOW...IT’S THE LAW!

If you own or operate a business of any kind, it’s important for you to understand your responsibilities as they relate to the installation, inspection and testing of portable fire extinguishers. These devices are your first line of defense when it comes to preventing a small fire from quickly getting out of control and causing substantial damage. Many businesses that experience even a moderate fire do not survive the experience so it’s well worth the investment to have and maintain these devices as well as to ensure staff are thoroughly trained and knowledgeable in their use.

Section 6.2 of the Ontario Fire Code sets out the many detailed requirements pertaining to fire extinguishers but essentially, they must be kept operable and fully charged in a conspicuous location near any specific hazard that may exist and “in or adjacent to corridors or aisles that provide access to exits”. On large floor areas or where visual obstructions exists, signs must be prominently located indicating the location of the extinguisher. There are different types of fire extinguishers designed for specific hazards – if you require assistance to determine which type is appropriate for you, please give us a call. Like all fire protection devices, fire extinguishers need to be checked, tested and maintained periodically and written records of these need to be kept on the premises for review by inspectors (Subsection 6.2.7.) The fire department can help you with various aspects of protecting your business including providing training for your staff on how to properly select and effectively use a fire extinguisher. If your business is interested in taking advantage of this service, please give us a call! And fire extinguishers can be an important part of your home or cottage’s fire safety plan as well – make sure you have at least one extinguisher available near your kitchen or garage.
