DID YOU KNOW...IT’S THE LAW Many buildings in our community have built-in fire protection systems for the safety of building occupants, the public and our firefighters. Sprinkler systems and fire alarm systems are perhaps the most widely recognized, but interior hose stations, voice communications systems and emergency power systems all fall under the maintenance provisions of Part 6 of the Ontario Fire Code. The building owner is responsible to maintain, check, inspect, and test these systems in accordance with the requirements for each – these are too varied to spell out here, but suffice it to say, these functions MUST be done periodically throughout the year. Documentation of this testing MUST be maintained on the premises and is subject to inspection by the fire department at any time – not having proper documentation of these maintenance procedures is the same as having not done them at all. Article 1.1.2.2. requires that the original records of all such checks, inspections and tests be maintained on the premises for a minimum of two years, and that at least the most recent two records be available. These must be made available to an inspector upon request, and of course it is an offence which could result in charges under the Fire Protection and Prevention Act if these are not produced or kept on site. As an owner, it’s your responsibility to know and follow the law - protect your investment; protect your clients; protect our community… This community safety message is provided as a courtesy by the Town of Gravenhurst. For more information on any fire safety matter, please contact us at 705-687-3414.
