Preparing for Winter Fall is quickly advancing and before we know it, the ground will have a blanket of snow and the cold weather prevails. Your heating equipment has been professionally checked, eavestroughs have been emptied of pine needles/leaves and the woodpile has been relocated away from any structures. Fuel cans have been capped and sealed and located to outdoor/unheated storage areas. Now what needs to be readied? How about checking/testing your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and replacing the batteries if you haven’t already? While you are at it, check the manufacturers’ date and most alarms have a dated lifespan of between 5-10 years old. Take a few minutes and vacuum/dust the alarms to get rid of any spiders, nests or cobwebs which may interfere with there operation. Almost 50% of all home fires occur in homes with no alarms. Your chances of dying in a house fire are cut in half if you have working smoke alarms. And should you experience a house fire, once you are out – stay out. Do not return and try to re-enter the home. For Gravenhurst residents in need of a smoke or carbon monoxide alarms, please do not go without. Contact the Gravenhurst Fire Department and we will provide them free of charge.
