Fire Prevention Week is October 4 – October 10. This year’s theme is

“Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen”. Help the Gravenhurst Fire Department spread the word about “serving up fire safety in the kitchen”. Kitchen fires still remain to be the leading cause of home fires and a leading cause of fire deaths and burn injuries. In addition to last weeks’ safety tips, practice these few extras and add them to your recipes when in the kitchen.

A FRIENDLY REMINDER FOR ALL- MASKS ARE MANDATORY IN ALL INDOOR PUBLIC SPACES THROUGHOUT MUSKOKA

1. Clear the clutter. Keep combustible items such as oven mitts, dish towels, paper towels and plastic utensils a safe distance away from the stove. 2. If deep-frying with oil or at high temperatures, a stove top fire can ignite very quickly. Be attentive and keep a close eye on your cooking at all times. 3. Fight or flight? A working portable fire extinguisher is a great safety item, provided you know how to use one. Only use the extinguisher on a small, contained fire. 4. In the event a fire occurs, be sure your exits are always accessible and unobstructed. Follow your Home Escape Plan. Do you have two ways out? 5. Make sure your home is equipped with working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. 6. And remember to keep your 3 feet radius of “kid free zone” at all times.
