With the onset of the nicer weather comes the increased possibility of severe storms to occur in our area. Severe storms such as Thunderstorms, Lightning, High Winds, Heavy Rains, Hail, and Tornadoes can develop quickly and threaten life and property and they can occur in any region of Canada during all seasons. In addition to the many impacts that may be experienced to buildings and infrastructure in a community, power outages resulting from such storm activity may pose several challenges for residents. Most power outages can be over as quickly as they happen, but some will last much longer. Some of the basic amenities we take for granted may not be available during a power outage unless you have back-up power supply. Some of those amenities that could be interrupted include:
Heating/air conditioning Lighting Hot water and even running water Phone service (for cordless phones) Ability to cook/prepare meals without a non-electric stove/burner Persons with disabilities who require the use of an elevator Persons with special medical needs who require power supply for medical equipment
Do you have a plan for when your power goes out? Do you know the precautions you should take when the power comes back on? For more information on making sure you are prepared for (before, during and after) a power outage occurs, visit www.gravenhurst.ca/prepare or www.getprepared.gc.ca for a copy of the guide on being prepared for power outages.

Access to Property Did you know that it’s the owners responsibility under section 2.5.1.3 to maintain fire access routes that are required under the Ontario Building and Fire Codes? Fire access routes must be available for firefighting operations and must not be obstructed by vehicles, gates, fences, building materials, vegetation, signs or any other obstruction. This also holds true for sprinkler and standpipe connections. But even where a formal fire route isn’t required by the codes, keeping access ways clear is just plain common sense. Fire trucks are generally big – and heavy. And big trucks need room and solid footing on which to work. Private roads and laneways or driveways should be maintained to a minimum width of 6 meters, and cleared of trees and overhead obstructions to a height of 5 meters. Fire department vehicles will not cross any bridge that is not signed and properly rated – our current fleet includes several vehicles that approach 25 metric tonnes in weight. Please take the time this spring to make sure we can get to you if you need help in a hurry! This community safety message is provided as a courtesy by the Town of Gravenhurst. For more information on fire department access to properties or any fire prevention matter, please contact us 705-687-3414.
