A RE-UTILISATION OF SPACE UNDER FLYOVERS IN HONG KONG

This thesis specialises in the re-utilisation of under-bridge space in Hong Kong through creating a new architectural typology in terms of space and structure. The new typology is a response towards the current situation of under-bridge space in Hong Kong, which are often congested and enclosed. This results in the blockage of pedestrian routes which hinders circulation and human activities. The new typology is tested in two sites, it retains the existing programs (public toilet, community centre and clinic) and enhances their performances through the introduction of new space, structure and circulation. This ultimately unleashes the potentiality of under-bridge space to become urban activators and community enhancers. With an emphasis on spatial quality, the new typology is perceived as “urban theatres� where activities and vibrancies are to be expressed and experienced by the users. The most distinctive features of this new typology are semi-sunken space and semisuspended structure. Half-sunken space allows an effective utilisation of space without compromising daylighting and ventilation. Besides of space, it also utilises the existing flyover structure to partially suspend floor slabs from it, which frees up the ground for a more transparent experience. Also, it enhances the flexibility of programs as walls are moveable with less structural constraints.

A WATERFRONT THEATRE IN SHEUNG WAN

Category: M.Arch Design Studio Advisor: Wallace Chang Period: Fall 2017 Duration: 3 Months The art of performance plays a significant role in our collective Hong Kong Memory. Sheung Wan is a place with traces of performance history of Hong Kong, this project is trying to rediscover and gather these traces of performance history, and finally generate new architectural ideas that echo the history of performance in Hong Kong. The concept of this project is banyan tree, a banyan has been a place for Hong Kong people to gather and perform since ancient times. From the historic banyan tree in Hollywood Road Park (former Tai Tat Tei) to the performance venues in Civic Centre, we see the potential of Sheung Wan to become one of the most prominent performance district in Hong Kong. This project proposes a contemporary formal city-scale theatre on the waterfront of Sheung Wan. Along the whole district, there are new interventions with natural elements and greenery that resembles the quality of banyan, which we hope to manifest the ultimate goal of the LCR platform: Living - City- Rural.

The walkable rooftop is inspired by the roots of a banyan, it is gently sloped to allow visitors to engage with the waterfront in a more natural,organic and dynamic way, the experience is similar to a coastal walk.

The rooftop of the main theatre is also a walkwable rooftop. Inspired by the roots of banyan, the theatre is half sunken to avoid obstruction of the harbour view. However, the main theatre’s rooftop keeps stepping up in order to house the 15m tall fly gallery below. Therefore, these stepping rooftops creates interesting landscape, as if the rooftop is a park.
The rooftop of the entrance is a canopy that creates a light quality of under a tree. Therefore when visitors gets in the theatre, the first thing they experience is the light quality of under a tree, which gives them a sense of protection and intimacy. The canopy area is also a foyer, which serves as a gathering space for people.
As the theatre is half sunken, it allows visitors within the building to interact with the harbour in a much closer way. The curtain wall is facing Victoria Harbour which creates a dynamic view.

EXODUS
Taikoo is one of the most populated residential districts in Hong Kong. Its organisation is well-ordered in grid form, with a large scale shopping centre at the core. The centralised shopping centre is driving the activities within the community. Residents and workers rely heavily on it for daily activities such as commuting, groceries, dining and leisure. With limited relationship with its surroundings, the shopping centre is confining people, acting as a barrier that polarises the local community. Since more people are choosing to stay within the shopping centre, the waterfront promenade and the Quarry Bay Park are thus further isolated.

Category: M.Arch Design Studio Advisor: Holger Kehne Period: Spring 2018 Duration: 4 Months This project is investigating two distinctive yet highly related topics: decentralisation and the rejection of mechanical connections. DECENTRALISATION - To establish a relationship between the shopping centre, the waterfront promenade and the Quarry Bay Park. Through the activation of these open spaces and the introduction of cultural venues such as museum and art gallery; the shopping centre no longer confine the activities of people. People would regain the freedom to experience culture and the historical past of their local community. REJECTION OF MECHANICAL CONNECTIONS - The circulation system of the shopping centre is dominated by elevators and escalators, which according to Koolhaas, are mechanical rather than architectural connections. These mechanical connections are repetitive and inhumane which sacrifices the users’ experience. Through the introduction of landscaping and cultural venues, people regain their rights to experience the local community in a more dramatic and humane way.

A WASTE-TO-ENERGY POWER PLANT IN KAI TAK

Category: M.Arch Design Studio Advisor: Espen Vatn Period: Fall 2018 Duration: 3 Months This project is proposing a waste-to-energy power plant in Kai Tak as a response to the elevating waste issue of Hong Kong. Through innovative ways of treating waste, this project is challenging the traditional operation process of power plants, in order to engage local people to develop a lifestyle of recycling waste. Traditional power plants in Hong Kong has a linear operation process from fuel to energy then to the public. However, this project is proposing a circular operation process, where the public provides the fuel of the power plant, which are the municipal waste. In return, the power plant will provide not only energy, but also recyclables, experience and enlightenment to the visitors. The site in Kai Tak provides several locational advantages to the project. As a former airport runway, the rectangular shape of the site allows a straightforward operation of the power plant, as theres an abundant space to house the massive machines. Also, it is near the water, so that waste could be transported through sea traffic. The design strategy of the power plant is to provide users such as visitors and researchers opportunities to experience, explore and to be enlightened. The form of the architecture is defined by a series of cascading platforms surrounding a central courtyard. The programmes are placed in accordance to this cascading gesture, with clearly defined sequence and circulation.

Category: B.Arch Design Studio Advisor: Barbara Busina Period: Spring 2016 Duration: 4 Months St Spyridon College is a Greek Orthodox school situated in Kingsford, Sydney. The college includes pre-school, kindergarten, primary school and secondary school. This project aims to accommodate these programs together as a single community, which holds to around 1,500 students. The existing St. Spyridon Church is the symbol of the college yet it operates independently for Sunday services and wedding ceremonies. The concept of the masterplan is a strong coherent force that is expressed through magnetic attraction. The scheme is precisely designed to establish a highly connected campus through the orientation of the buildings. The buildings are wrapping around the church to retain the strong coherent force within the community whilst giving the church adequate space to breathe and to operate independently.

COHERENT FORCE Coherent force releases from the centre of the site, then retained by the surrounding campus building.
STREET PRESENCE A friendly and engaging street presence enhances interaction with public, creating a welcoming entrance.
THE BRIDGE It serves as a shared library space and also bridges the gap along Day Lane to further unify the whole campus as a one community.
MAGNETIC ATTRACTION Building facades are interlocking to symbolise the north and south poles of magnets, which establishes a strong magnetic attractions among buildings.

Category: B.Arch Design Studio Advisor: Peter Chivers Period: Fall 2016 Duration: 4 Months Situated in a quiet suburb of Sydney, Randwick, the student residence is part of the UNSW (the University of New South Wales) Residential Community. The residence accommodates a total of 20 university students, with the options of single or shared rooms. This project started off with the investigation of the site and various human situations, then multiple proposals were presented to accommodate the identified site conditions and human situations. Later in the semester, these proposals were combined to form the final proposal shown below, which is refined to encourage the best quality of human situations.
