Where in Helvetica did it come from?
Eduard Hoffmann
Compressed 24
Eduard Hoffmann, who was the director of Haas Type Foundry in Münchenstein, Switzerland, invented it in 1957. Hoffmann based it off of the font Akzidenz-Grotesk and created it because he wanted a typeface that could be featured in a variety of situations. Did You Know?
Helvetica has been into space! One of NASA’s spaceships uses Helvetica in the words “United States” on the side of the ship. It has its own movie! It was created by Gary Hustwit’s and released on the 50th anniversary of the font. It is a full-length independent film that looks at how the typography affects our lives. Its gives you a reason to enjoy doing your income taxes as all of the forms are set in Helvetica! Similar fonts are Folio, Univers, Arial and MS Sans Serif Google’s used Helvetica as one of their April Fools Day jokes in 2011. If a user attempted to search for the term “Helvetica” using Google, the results would be displayed in the font Comic Sans. Light Condensed Oblique 18

Where’d you find that Helvetica?
Compressed 24
Companies and brands that use fonts from the Helvetica typeface family include American Airlines, Microsoft, Jeep, The North Face, Target, Crate & Barrel, and Urban Outfitters. The clothing store American Apparel uses Helvetica for nearly all, if not all, of its advertisements and clothing labels. The company’s ads combine the simplicity of Helvetica with basic headlines and somewhat provocative photos to catch people’s attention. Designer Massimo Vignelli proposed that Helvetica be used for the New York Subway more than 20 years before it was. It’s still used today on every subway sign. The FDA’s labeling and nutrition guidelines require labels to use Helvetica Black, or in some cases Franklin Gothic Heavy, for the “Nutrition Facts” title and Helvetica Regular or Black for the rest of the label.
