In the 15th Chapter of The Gospel According to St. Luke, we find the well-known story of the Parable of the Loving Father. Or, as it is o en called, the Parable of the Prodigal Son. “A certain man had two sons,” said Jesus. One day, the younger son, claimed his inheritance and went into a distant country and wasted his life through undisciplined living. When he came to himself and headed home, his father saw him in the distance, ran out to meet him, and before the night was over, they had a party to celebrate the son’s return. In the mean me, the older brother was out in the fields du fully doing his work. When he learned that his younger brother had returned and a party was being held in his honor the elder brother was furious. So the elder brother refused to come inside and instead stayed outside. Once again, the father came out to meet him at the point of his need. (Luke 15:11-32) Today is Father’s Day and like me, many of you had fathers who loved you, cared for you, and sacrificed so that you might have chances in life that they never had open to them. For you today is a day to be grateful for your earthly fathers. Of course, that is not the case for everyone. Yet, either way, the good news is that all of us have a Heavenly Father who loves us more than we could ever imagine, comes to meet us right where we live and work everyday, and has sacrificed so that we might have life abundant and life eternal. So today, as our society celebrates Father’s Day, may each of us celebrate the good news of God’s gracious love for us in Jesus Christ.
Blessings,
Dan

I Knew My Father Knew
Lauren Heidingsfelder, mezzo-soprano I watched him with the eager eyes of childhood day by day. The way he lived said more to me than words could ever say, The simple truths he taught me would endure my whole life through, And long before I knew them myself, I knew my father knew. I borrowed his unfailing faith, I trusted in his love, I counted on his courage when my own was not enough, I turned to him for counsel through the perils of my youth, And even when I doubted, s ll I knew, I knew my father knew. I saw his quiet witness in the tears he could not hide As he taught me of the Savior, how He lived and how He died, I felt the Holy Spirit as he tes fied of truth, And I began to understand the things I knew my father knew, I have found my father's faith deep within my soul, A legacy I'll treasure through eterni es untold, And ev'ry thing I try to be, and ev'rything I do, I do because I learned to know and love the things I knew my father knew.
